The introduction of the Localism Act provided exciting new powers for residents to shape and influence their communities. This is your opportunity to have your say on the future of your town. The Town Council and local volunteers have been working hard towards producing the Otley Neighbourhood Plan - after the first phase of consultation (thank you for all your responses) we are now in a position to ask you whether we are looking at the issues and providing policies on the things that matter to you. Every household and business in the town should have received a copy of the Policy Intentions Document (PID) – if you haven’t received one – pop into the Town Council offices in Orchard Gate or the library and pick one up. We need you to share your views. This plan is important for everyone. You, as residents must vote at a referendum to adopt it. If you vote in favour, it will then become a legal document and any decisions on future planning applications will be required to be made in accordance with your Neighbourhood Plan. Otley Victorian Fayre was originally the brainchild of Otley Chamber of Trade who wanted to give the town’s shops a boost in the run up to Christmas. They chose the Victorian theme because it was in the Victorian era that Christmas, as we now know it, really started. The Fayre is run by a volunteer committee who work tirelessly to ensure it stays true to the aims set down by its founders. The organisation of the Fayre is overseen by Otley Town Partnership. This amazing event started in 1985 and, for 24 years, was held on a Friday evening attracting crowds of approximately 8,000 visitors. In 2010, to celebrate its Silver Anniversary, it was decided to hold the Fayre on a Sunday and make it a family day out. This proved to be a resounding success. Crowds are now double what they were before – and growing annually. The Fayre is held in Otley town centre which is fully pedestrianised for the event and everything is within easy walking distance. Attractions include: market stalls, street entertainment, Punch and Judy, local schools singing carols, street food, traditional fairground rides and much, much, more. Many of the towns shops are open on the day and decorate their windows in a Victorian theme to participate in a window dressing competition. The shop owners and stallholders get into the spirit of things by dressing in period costume. This all makes for a wonderful, festive family atmosphere. No event before Christmas would be complete without Santa who will of course be here. Come along and visit his grotto in the Market Place and bring along your Christmas Wish List. The grotto will be provided by Otley Lions with all proceeds going to charity. As night falls, there will be a lantern parade starting at Otley Courthouse and winding its way around town. The lanterns are all hand made by local children who will be carrying them in the parade, accompanied by a live band. A truly magical experience. The Fayre is so successful that it attracts visitors from far and wide who come to join in the fun and savour the atmosphere. The Wharfedale Male Voice Choir first performedin 1984 through a group of men in the BurleyProbus Club who simply had a joy of singingtogether and have kept the idea going since then.

Rehearsals are held at the Catholic Church Hall onBradford Road in Burley-in-Wharfedale eachMonday afternoon from 2-4pm.

The aims of the Choir are simple, to sing forpleasure, to sing for the pleasure of other people, and to raise money for charity.

Members are not given auditions, and an abilityto read music, whilst a help, is not essential, and allnew members can be assured of a warm welcome.

Already, various concerts have been arranged for

later this year, particularly nearer Christmas, andthese can be very happy occasions.

The photograph shows a number of the memberswho performed a well-attended concert of WorldWar I songs at the Burley Parish Church in thespring of this year.

At last! We will have a new Minister early inthe New Year as Rev Jason McCullagh, atpresent an URC Minister in Scarborough, hasbeen called to come to the Bridge after anoverwhelming vote by members at a specialChurch meeting held at the end of September. He will take charge of both the Bridge Churchin Otley and the Salem Church in Burley, historyrepeating itself as Rev Leon Cook did exactlythe same until he went, ironically, to the sameChurch that Jason is leaving in Scarborough. That was nearly 50 years ago!

Meanwhile December will see the usual Giftand Candlelight services and the "Singing 4Fun" group will continue rehearsing for theeagerly awaited production on the last week-end in January. Exciting times ahead!

In September we took part at Bramhope Showand the following week the Otley VintageTransport Extravaganza, which was also the lastevent at which Chip made an appearance.

During October we played host to ChelseaPensioners; honoured guests at the RAF CollegeBand Concert for the Royal British Legion.

While Chip’s gone into his winter hibernation,Otley Lions will be turning efforts to theirChristmas projects. Santa will once again begiving many hours to help them raise money, this year to support the provision of defibrillatorsin and around Otley.

On the 12th September, Otley Cricket Club Firstswere due to play their last match of an excitingseason at Beckwithshaw. Otley arrived trailingtheir hosts in the League by just a few points.

The weather forecast was not encouraging andit rained all morning until about 11am. Thehome team clearly did not want to play becausecalling the game off would have given them thechampionship. Otley needed to play and win.

To this end Club chairman, Chris Smith organisedtransport of mopping up equipment and bothhe and the players set about preparing theBeckwithshaw pitch and surrounds for play. The opposition stood and watched!

It was agreed that play should start late at 2pm butat 1-30pm it poured down with rain for nearlyhalf an hour. Mopping up continued and even-tually play started at 4pm with a well-motivatedOtley team against a reluctant host.

Otley batted first and ammassed a mammothtotal of 173 in 20 overs. The opposition could notget anywhere near, resulting in Otley winning thematch and the League title.

The second team victory was less dramatic butthey also won the Championship. A wonderfulyear for the Club (social membership only £10)- bring on 2016!

New Season for Otley Badminton Club

With the festive season now upon us I wantedto take this opportunity to wish everyone inOtley a very Merry Christmas and a HappyNew Year.

While burglary, car crime and other crime typescontinue to remain reassuringly low in Otleyand the Wharfe Valley, it’s a timely opportunity

to remind people that sadly criminals don’t take a break at this timeof year.

We will still be working hard to catch and deter them throughoutthe festive season and we would ask people to think about theirhome security, not to leave valuables such as Christmas shoppingor presents in their cars, and to watch their phones and handbagswhile out shopping or enjoying themselves.

Don’t leave presents on show under your tree and don’t leave yourhouse in darkness while you’re out at your Christmas party.

We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year.WAITROSE
