“Por aquellos días, le llegó a Isabel la hora de dar a luz y tuvo un hijo. Cuando sus vecinos y parientes se enteraron de que el Señor le había manifestado tan

grande misericordia, se regocijaron con ella. A los ocho días fueron a circuncidar al niño y le querían poner Zacarías, como su padre; pero la madre se opuso, diciéndoles: ‘No. Su nombre será Juan’. Ellos

le decían: ‘Pero si ninguno de tus parientes se llama así’. Entonces le preguntaron por señas al padre cómo quería que se llamara el niño.

Él pidió una tablilla y escribió: ‘Juan es su nombre’. Todos se quedaron extrañados. En ese momento a Zacarías se le soltó la lengua,

recobró el habla y empezó a bendecir a Dios. Un sentimiento de temor se apoderó de los vecinos y en toda la región

montañosa de Judea se comentaba este suceso. Cuantos se enteraban de ello se preguntaban impresionados: ‘¿Qué va a ser de este niño?’

Esto lo decían, porque realmente la mano de Dios estaba con él. El niño se iba desarrollando físicamente y su espíritu se iba fortaleciendo, y vivió en el desierto hasta el día en que se dio a conocer al pueblo de Israel”.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s midsummer day! We have the advantage of cele-brating one of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are only three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today’s birth of the Baptist. Today’s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsum-mer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a reli-gious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Eu-rope see people staying up all night, lighting “St. John’s fires” in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interest-ed in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea between mid-night and dawn to honor John. Hoy recordamos a san Juan Bautista, primo de Jesu-cristo y precursor del Mesías. Juan se hizo famoso predi-cando la penitencia y bautizando con agua, insistiendo que vendría uno que bautizaría al mundo con fuego y el Es-píritu Santo. Hoy es uno de los santos mas festejados en el mundo, especialmente en zonas donde su fiesta coincidía con la llegada del verano.

Para celebrar a este santo pariente de Jesús la gente en Alicante, España, hace fogatas durante la noche de su vigilia y baila en torno a ellas. En América el pueblo Boli-viano también recibe al santo con hogueras, para quemar la tierra en busca de fertilidad y purificación. Los Bolivianos también festejan echándose agua los unos a los otros.

San Juan ha sido honrado en el hemisferio Americano desde 1509 cuando Juan Ponce de León nombró la Isla de Puerto Rico en su honor. También allí hacen el juego del agua en la fiesta de san Juan ya que los fieles se echan de espaldas al océano tres veces en busca de purificación y celebración.

Saint John the Baptist June 24 The first two chapters of Luke's Gospel alternate

between the annunciation and birth of John the Baptist, and the annunciation and birth of Jesus. The story of John sets the very Jewish environment into which Jesus and John were born. Jesus' annunciation and birth begins to move the Gospel into the environment of the Roman empire. The birth of John the Baptist has been announced by the angel Gabriel to Zechariah, who was performing his duties as a priest in the Jerusalem Temple. Gabriel then announced the birth of Jesus to Mary in her home in Nazareth. Zechariah and his wife, Elizabeth, are an old couple who have never had children. Mary is engaged to Joseph, but they have not yet come to live to-gether. Elizabeth's neighbors and relatives re-joice with her because God has shown her mercy in the birth of a son. But they are con-fused when she tells them that his name is to be John, which means “God has been gra-cious.” Zechariah has been unable to speak since Gabriel appeared, because, contrary to Mary, he doubted the angel's word. But when he writes on a tablet “John is his name” all are amazed, and a great fear comes upon every-one. Fear, along with joy and praise, is for Luke the appropriate response to God's mercy. People ask, “What, then, will this child be?” But this question has already been answered by the angel. “He will be great in the sight of the Lord. He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.” Zechariah responds with praise in his famous canti-cle, the Benedictus. But that is not read today. Instead we jump to the last verses of the chapter, which explain that John will become strong in spirit living in the desert until it is time to show himself to the people of Israel. When John appears again at the beginning of Chapter 3, after the stories of the birth and childhood of Jesus, he will prepare those people for the ministry of Jesus by preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

S anto de la Semana San Juan el Bautista 24 de Junio Como a toda mujer encinta, a Isabel le ha llegado

su hora. Dentro de la historia, el alumbramiento de una mu-jer constituye un hecho absolutamente normal, aunque gozoso para los padres y los parientes. Nuestro caso presen-ta, sin embargo, un aspecto diferente. Los padres eran an-cianos; y la mujer, estéril. Por eso, dentro de los límites humanos, era imposible una concepción y un nacimiento. Pero ante Dios no existen cosas imposibles. Por eso, los ancianos han podido recibir el don de un niño. Para entenderlo totalmente debemos tener en cuenta otro

dato: lo que al autor del evangelio le interesa no es el detalle histórico de los padres ancia-nos o el hecho biológico de la esterilidad. Lo que interesa es que estos hechos transmiten una certeza fundamental: la convicción de que Juan Bautista no ha sido simplemente el resultado de una casualidad biológica. El texto presupone que en el nacimiento de Juan han intervenido dos factores. Actúa, por un lado, la realidad humana de los padres que se aman. Al mismo tiempo, influye de manera decisiva el poder de Dios que guía la historia de los hombres. La prueba de ese poder es el milagro de la fecundidad de unos ancianos. Su resultado, el nacimiento de Juan Bautista. Es él quien, dentro de la línea de los profetas de Israel, prepara de una manera inmediata el camino de Jesús. Sobre este

fondo se entiende perfectamente la historia del nombre. Siguiendo la tradición de la familia y suponiendo que el niño les pertenece, los parientes quieren llamarlo Zacarías. Los padres, sin embargo, saben que el niño es un regalo de Dios y Dios le ha destinado a realizar su obra. Por eso le impone el nombre de Juan, como se lo ha indicado el ángel (1,13). Y Juan significa: “Dios es misericordioso”. Por me-dio de este niño, Dios se manifiesta realmente misericordio-so para con sus padres. Y se manifiesta más misericordioso aún para con el mundo, porque le regala el Precursor de su propio Hijo Divino.

Los primeros dos capítulos del Evan-gelio de Lucas alternan entre los relatos de la anunciación y el Nacimiento de Juan el Bautista y la anunciación y el nacimiento de Jesús. El relato de Juan pinta el ambiente judío en el que Jesús

y Juan nacieron. La anunciación y el nacimiento de Jesús va conduciendo al Evangelio hacia el ambiente del Imperio Romano. El nacimiento de Juan el Bautista ha sido anunciado por el ángel Gabriel a Zacarías, quien ejecutaba sus deberes como sacerdote en el tem-plo de Jerusalén. Gabriel luego anunció a María el nacimiento de Jesús en su casa en Nazaret. Zacarias y su esposa, Isabel, son una pareja de ancianos que jamás tuvieron hijos. María está esposada con José pero aún no han vivido juntos. Los vecinos y parientes de Isabel se alegran con ella porque Dios le ha mostrado su mis-ericordia en el nacimiento de un hijo. Pero cuando escribe en la tablilla “Juan es su nombre” todos quedan asombrados y llenos todos de un gran miedo. El miedo, junto con la alegría y el elogio, es para Lucas la respuesta apropiada a la miser-icordia de Dios. El pueblo pregunto, “¿qué será de este niño?” Pero esta pregunta ya ha sido contestada por el ángel. “Será grande a la vista del Señor. Volverá a muchos de los hijos de Israel al Señor su Dios.” Zacarías responde con elogio en su famoso canto, el Benedictus. Pero hoy no se lee. En vez, brincamos a los últimos versículos del capítulo que explican que Juan será fortalecido de espíritu en el desierto hasta que sea el momento para revelarse al pueblo de Israel. Cathedral Parishioner Registration If you regularly worship at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph then please accept our invitation to register so that we can know you as a regular member of our parish community. By registering, your participation and Sun-day offerings either with envelopes or online besides benefiting our parish, can be acknowledged for tax pur-poses as well be beneficial in other ways.
