December 2018
Dear friends in the Lord,
On December 8 and 9, the archdiocese will conduct the Retirement Fund for Religious special collection. This
annual appeal benefits 31,000 elderly sisters, brothers and religious order priests — women and men who have
consecrated their lives to serving God and His Church.
During the 2018 World Day for Consecrated Life, Pope Francis remarked, “There is no growth without roots and
no flowering without new buds.” This analogy has certainly born out within the life of the Church in the United
States. Senior religious were the roots that established Catholic schools, hospitals, and social service agencies —
allowing generations of Catholics to flourish. Today, the example of older religious inspires younger members to
persevere in mission and ministry.
Yet, many religious communities struggle to provide for aging members. Most elderly religious served for small
stipends, leaving a large gap in retirement savings. Rising healthcare costs and decreased income compound the
struggle to provide adequate care. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious special collection provides vital
funding for medications, nursing care, and more. It also helps religious congregations implement long-range
retirement strategies, even as they continue to serve the People of God.
This is, I recognize, but one of numerous worthy causes in need of assistance; I ask simply that you give what you
can. In thanksgiving for their faithful service, please join me in supporting the Retirement Fund for Religious
collection and in praying for the Lord’s blessing on our nation’s elderly religious.
With prayerful best wishes, I am,
Faithfully in Christ,
+ Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan
Archbishop of New York

Polish Wigilia (Oplatek)
The Christmas Eve Wigilia Supper forms the focal point of the Polish Yuletide customs. Wigilia, which means vigil,
commemorates the birth of Jesus. For Polish families, the meal starts when the eastern star appears through the parlor window
to serve as a guide to the Birth of Jesus in the same manner as the star of Bethlehem was a guide to the Magi!
The meal begins with the ancient tradition of breaking oplatek, a thin wafer, or bread of love. It is passed to the
various members of the family who put it to their lips and wish each other Blessings for the upcoming year.
These wafers are now available in the Rectory Office.
UNCLE AL’S THRIFT SHOP
The Christmas and Holiday Shop excitement is over — well, not quite! It was wonderful to have so many new and
old Uncle Al’s customers come to the special three-day sale. But that is not the end of holiday bargains! Our
Thrift Shop at 3275 Franklin Avenue has lots and lots of Christmas stock — everything from clothing and
accessories to lovely gift items. Toys, games, jewelry, kitchenware — we have them too. All done with buying
things for the holidays? How about warm winter clothing for yourself or your family? Tired of the same lamps,
pillows, wall décor, bedding in your home? Uncle Al’s has great selections at bargain prices and newly donated
items are added as fast as we can sort and price them. As Advent begins, our Christmas thought is: kindness is
contagious...
Last day! Christmas sale will be at the Parish Hall TODAY Sunday, (Dec. 2) from 10:00am to 2:00pm.
All proceeds benefit St. Joseph-Immaculate Conception Church.
