Happy Autumn! The leaves are changing colors, the air is a bit crisper, and the wind is swaying the
trees- fall is upon us! Hooray to us for making it through an entire month of school! It has been great so far. We are excited about what’s to come. Getting to know one

Note to Parents · You have access to your child’s progress in each class. Please login to Parent Portal to stay abreast of students’ grades. Students are expected to follow schoolwide and classroom behavior and academic expectations. ·Homework is given in all classes-please check to make sure your child is completing assignments. Attendance Policy Students should be at school on time each day in a proper Carson Uniform. Students are considered
tardy after 7:45am. Please make sure to be logged in on time to complete the daily check in and to be marked present in the homeroom. Students
arriving after homeroom do not receive a full day.

Instructional Focus Math with Mrs. Wolf
We have had a great beginning to a new school year. 8th grade students began this school year with the unit called Real Numbers and Exponents. Students are half way through and they will continue learning about exponents and scientific notations. Students will begin to use their knowledge of properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical expressions. They also will be using scientific notation to write very big and very small numbers and will apply those skills to solve real-world problems. Algebra I students will be solving linear equations and inequalities in one and two variables.
Reading with Mrs. Whorton
We are ready to move into our second unit, where we will be exploring literary elements through short stories. Students will be reading texts that are a part of the horror genre. They will focus on the essential
question, “Why do people sometimes like to be frightened?” Students will be introduced to new standards, reinforce previously learned, and build those that are in need of support. We will read classic stories like Edgar
Allen Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Monkey’s Paw”.
Writing with Ms. Carcanaquez We are finishing up our unit on Informational Essays and technology. Aligning to our reading unit, we will also move into a creative writing unit where students will be writing their own short stories. We will be
analyzing the features of a short story, with a focus on the horror genre. Students will be introduced to new standards that focus on writing
engaging details in a narrative story.
Science with Ms. Whidden We are starting our new unit about energy. Students assume the role of student
energy scientists in order to help a team of rescue workers with an energy problem. Students work to find a way to get the energy to the batteries in the
rescue workers’ electrical devices, even during power outages, and this serves as the design problem for the unit. First, students are motivated to explore
relationships between different types of energy—with an emphasis on kinetic energy and potential energy—and the ways energy is transferred and converted.
To solve the rescue team’s energy problem, students research various ways to capture and store energy. Then, students apply their knowledge about energy to
design an energy system that can use human kinetic energy to power an electrical device.
Civics
This unit focuses on the rights that make it possible for people to fulfill their role as participants in a democracy. The unit also asks students to consider their
responsibilities to our democracy. In the first lesson, students brainstorm questions about the rights and responsibilities of powerful civic actors. Students
then learn about the importance of the U.S. Constitution in providing rights individuals need in order to fulfill their role in a democracy.

Póliza del Uniforme
Los estudiantes deben estar en la escuela a tiempo todos los días con
un uniforme de Carson adecuado. El uniforme consiste en una parte
superior blanca, fondos azul marino y zapatos negros. Con el cambio de
clima, se permiten suéteres; sin sudaderas. Los suéteres pueden ser
azules o blancos.

Enfoque Instruccional
Matemáticas con la Sra. Wolf
Hemos tenido un gran comienzo para un nuevo año escolar. Los estudiantes de
octavo grado comenzaron este año escolar con la unidad llamada Números reales y
exponentes. Los estudiantes están a la mitad de la unidad y continuarán
aprendiendo sobre exponentes y notaciones científicas. Los estudiantes comenzarán
a usar su conocimiento de las propiedades de los exponentes enteros para generar
expresiones numéricas equivalentes. También utilizarán la notación científica para
escribir números muy grandes y muy pequeños y aplicarán esas habilidades para
resolver problemas del mundo real. Los estudiantes de Álgebra I resolverán
ecuaciones lineales y desigualdades en una y dos variables.
Clase de lectura con la Sra. Whorton
Estamos listos para pasar a nuestra segunda unidad, donde exploramos elementos
literarios a través de cuentos cortos. Los estudiantes leerán textos que son parte del
género de terror. Se centrarán en la pregunta esencial: "¿Por qué a las personas a
veces les gusta estar asustadas?" Los estudiantes aprenderán nuevos estándares,
reforzarán los aprendidos previamente y construirán aquellos que necesitan apoyo.
Leeremos historias clásicas como "The Tell-Tale Heart" y "The Monkey’s Paw" de
Edgar Allen Poe.
Clase de Escritura con la Srita. Carcanaquez
Estamos terminando nuestra unidad de Ensayos Informativos y tecnología.
Al alinearnos con nuestra unidad de lectura, también pasaremos a una
unidad de escritura creativa donde los estudiantes escribirán sus propios
cuentos. Vamos a analizar las características de una historia corta, con un
enfoque en el género de terror. Los estudiantes aprenderán nuevos
estándares que se centran en escribir detalles interesantes en una historia
narrativa.
Clase de Ciencias con la Srita. Whidden
Estamos comenzando nuestra nueva unidad sobre energía. Los estudiantes
asumen el papel de científicos de energía estudiantil para ayudar a un
equipo de rescatistas con un problema de energía. Los estudiantes trabajan
para encontrar una manera de llevar energía a las baterías en los
dispositivos eléctricos de los trabajadores de rescate, incluso durante los
cortes de energía, y esto sirve como el problema de diseño de la unidad.
Primero, los estudiantes estarán motivados para explorar las relaciones
entre los diferentes tipos de energía, con énfasis en la energía cinética y la
energía potencial, y las formas en que la energía se transfiere y convierte.
Para resolver el problema de energía del equipo de rescate, los estudiantes

Clase de Estudios Sociales para todos:

pide a los estudiantes que consideren sus responsabilidades con nuestra
democracia. En la primera lección, los estudiantes intercambian ideas sobre
los derechos y responsabilidades de los poderosos actores cívicos. Luego, los
estudiantes aprenden sobre la importancia de la Constitución de los Estados
Unidos para brindar los derechos que las personas necesitan para cumplir
con su papel en una democracia.
