CONYERS SCHOOL Dear Parents, Students and Friends,

Thursday, 18 September was a very special day for Conyers as

staff and students participated in an event which comes round

only once every 7 years: the whole school photograph. It has

huge importance to us as it allows each individual to take a place

in our photographic history. The first school photograph

displayed dates back to 1924 and the modern tradition

commenced in 2000 to commemorate the millennium. It is

wonderful to observe how times have changed and our

community has continued to grow. In 2000 Rachel Flanagan took

her place on the photograph, a smartly dressed student who

would one day be Head Girl. In 2007 she appeared as Miss Flanagan, a trainee teacher, and in September, proudly

took her place as Mrs Houchen, Head of Modern Foreign Languages. Hers was one face in a crowd and one of many

wonderful stories. The photographs will soon be available to view and purchase should you wish to capture this

wonderful memory for your child.

You will see from the rest of the newsletter how busy we have

been with much to

celebrate. There are some

wonderful photographs of

our Celebration of

Achievement evening, in

which we recognise those

students who worked

particularly hard during the

last academic year. You can

see a range of winners, from

Morgan Szulc who was awarded the John Morgan Special Award for an

outstanding GCSE performance and wonderful contribution to the life of the

school, to Year 8 students who were recognised for making a fantastic start to life

at Conyers.

Have a lovely half term break and we look forward to welcoming students back on

National Poetry Day was again celebrated throughout the school, with students of all ages writing poems on the theme of "Remember". Many chose to reflect back to last year's activity week and consider the impact of war and bereavement. Once again, Conyers students showed themselves to be sensitive and creative young people.

Readathon is now in full swing with all Year 7 students and some in other years enjoying their reading whilst raising money for good causes through the Roald Dahl Foundation. Donations are to be handed in after the half-term break. We have many avid readers in our school and this popular initiative allows them to make particularly good use of their interest.

Potential A* English Students in Year 11 have begun attending a special night class on Wednesday evenings, in which they explore a range of issues and approaches that will allow them to develop their skills even further. These challenging but friendly sessions have been particularly well attended this year and should lead to some outstanding results in the summer.

Lowest Possible Positive Whole Number Competition Winner The recent "Lowest possible positive whole number" competition run by the maths department for the Year 6 Open

Evening was won by Charlotte Harland of Levendale Primary who chose the number 2!

Despite lots of people choosing 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and even 13, Charlotte was the only person who picked the number 2.

Interestingly, nobody picked the number 4, despite having over 60 people enter the competition.

Year 12 Geography Fieldwork Trip On Friday 26 September, twenty-four Year 12 students ventured off

to Codbeck, Osmotherley to take part in river fieldwork as part of

their geography course. Students were joined by Mr Pickering and

Mrs Cousin-Dawson on the trip. The weather was fine all morning,

until there was a short shower, but students battled on and

continued with their work. This was a perfect opportunity for

students to take their learning outside of the classroom and put the

skills they learnt at

Conyers into

practice.

Thankfully most of

the students

managed to stay

dry, apart from

Sohrab who

brought a pair of

leaky wellies! A

great day was had

by all, and it was a really good chance for the students and staff to

become better acquainted before a year of intensive study.

Friends of Conyers Many thanks to all of you who supported Friends of Conyers over the last year.

It has been a successful year for our PTA with various fundraising events such as the 100 Club, “Can’t Cook Won’t Cook” cooking demonstration, Christmas Fayre, Year 7 Disco amongst

others. With your help we have raised over £4600 to support our students with extra-curricular materials.

Friends of Conyers Christmas Poster Competition for Year 7 and Year 8

Design a Christmas Poster and the winner will receive a big bar of Cadbury's chocolate. Designs must be sent to Miss Green [email protected] by 12.00 p.m. on Monday 3 November 2014. Good Luck.

This year’s biggest forthcoming event is our Christmas Fayre which is on

Friday 28 November between 5.30 and 8.00pm.

Please come and support this event and bring along family and friends. This year we will have live music provided by our school choir, the lighting of the Christmas tree lights by Santa, Santa’s Grotto and lots of interesting stalls where you can do a bit of your Christmas shopping. There will also be an opportunity to enjoy minced pies, mulled wine, burgers and hot dogs, tea and coffee in our Dining Hall.

Of course if you have any special hidden talent and you would like to sell and display your crafted goods, you can hire a stall yourselves too. Please indicate your interest to [email protected]

Bletchley Park Lecture Year 11 were very lucky to attend a lecture on code breaking during WW2, in which they learnt about the work that many men and women did at Bletchley Park during the Second World War. This lecture gave them an insight into the history behind the enigma machine and how it was used to break German codes during the war.

As well as this, they were able to learn more about the different types of code breaking techniques that were developed during the 1940's, as well as seeing an enigma machine in operation.

Focus Day 1 Year 7 continued the ‘Sparking the Gap’ theme with a visit to Beamish. The day developed team work skills through

students working together in groups, to investigate problems using themes that were previously set up for them.

“My highlights of the day were seeing a living museum and going to see the old fashioned houses and how people

lived back then. I also loved the sweet shop.”

Year 8 took part in a Poverty Day. The aim of the day was for

students to understand what poverty is, what causes it and to

know what they can do to help. Activities included baking a budget

pizza, developing world jewellery, emergency aid team challenges

and a poverty debate.

“The pizza making was fun because as a form we got to make our

own pizza. I also enjoyed the debate and the game at the end with

the card numbers and the rope with the record to beat!”

Year 9 students visited Middlesbrough Football Club, where they

undertook enterprise activities, including teamwork, financial

planning, management and risk.

“The highlights of the day were that we got to see what it is like for footballers before a match, we also got to see

their trophies and there was lots of fun.”

Year 10 took part in a Health Day. The day highlighted to students how an appropriate balance between work,

leisure and exercise can promote physical and mental health, and

how to identify and make choices about living a healthy lifestyle.

Activities included Boot Camp, Taekwondo and Wadokai, alongside

classroom activities on mental health, healthy eating, sleep and

fitness.

“The thing I enjoyed most was the Taekwondo as it was something

new that neither me nor most of my peers had ever tried and I loved

how the man gave us lots of inspirational speeches that set us all in

an optimistic mood ready for session!”

Year 11 students took part in a Careers Day. The objectives of the

day were to identify the process to go through when applying for a job, to understand the importance of tailoring a

CV specific to the job you are applying for, and to understand the difference of a personal statement and job

description. Youth Direction came into school to complete an interactive ‘Buzz’ session with students, to help them

identify their learning styles, for example ‘How do you best take information in – details/facts or big picture/ideas’.

Once complete, the profile helped students identify their strengths, preferred learning styles, leadership styles and

job roles. Year 11 students will continue to have a big careers input this year, including tutorials and talks from

colleges and on apprenticeships.

“When the person from Youth Direction came and helped us find out what skills we have and what types of job we

would be good for.”

“Being with our form all day which was good.”

Year 12 students visited Leeds Beckett University in order to receive a well-rounded idea about university life and

the different kinds of universities available.

Year 13 students completed their Personal Statements ready for their UCAS applications and had a session on how

to prepare and succeed in interviews.

Year 8 Poverty Focus Day The Year 8 Poverty Focus Day was a great success, with students having

reflected on the issue of poverty at a local, national and international

level. The wide range of

activties included the chance

to make bracelets and learn

about child labour and the

role of Fairtrade in tackling

this issue. Others were part

of the debating team,

deciding the extent to which

charity starts at home. All students participated in the 'Save the Children'

session thus contributing to their understanding of the types of

preventable diseases. At this point a special thanks must go to Milina and

Varda Jasingh from 8AG for their outstanding assistance.

Moreover, all students engaged in the ‘Emergency Aid Team Challenge’,

which allowed them to develop their leadership and teamwork skills.

During the 'Bake a Budget Pizza' session the students were able to show

off their culinary skills whilst

assessing yet still produce

healthy, tasty food on a tight

budget. Finally, I am proud

to announce the whole year

group voted to donate to a

child’s education for a year.

Thank you to all students and staff involved for helping to make it an

awesome day full of learning and reflection!

‘That Poetry Bloke’ On Wednesday 1 October staff and students alike enjoyed hilarious

and entertaining poetry workshops throughout the day with 'That

Poetry Bloke' Craig Bradley in celebration of National Poetry Day.

Craig, who used to be a stand-up comedian, performed to all Year 7

students, as well as entertaining smaller groups in the Learning

Resource Centre by running a series of workshops for students from

Years 7, 8, 9 and 12, and also a group of Year 6 students from Great

Smeaton Primary School.

Each session lasted an hour and included a lot of audience

participation and laughter.

The day proved to be an interactive day and a fun way of learning for all.

World’s Largest Scrum A 5 a.m. start did not dampen our spirits as we left Yarm to visit Twickenham to take part in the ‘World’s Largest Scrum’ on Friday 12 September. On arrival at the stadium we were placed into groups of 50 people. We were given a pink T-shirt to show which team we were on and a blue wristband to represent the position we had to play, we were to play second row.

Whilst we waited to go on the pitch a surprise guest arrived, Lawrence Dallaglio. Lawrence was the captain of the 2003 England team who won the Rugby World Cup, his position was number 8 and he is regarded as one of the best England players of all time. Lawrence gave a speech on how he thought England would do in the 2015 Rugby World Cup; he talked about how the youth of the team was going to be a major strength for them. We then had the opportunity to have our photo taken with him. After Lawrence left to see the other groups taking part, another famous guest arrived; it was Will Greenwood, another member of the 2003 England squad that beat Australia in the final of the World Cup. He talked about what it was like to be part of the World Cup winning team and about the current England team’s chances of winning the 2015 Rugby World Cup too. He also talked about the youth coming through the academies and how important they are going to be carrying on the future of Rugby.

After we had finished having our photographs taken we started to make our way on to the pitch. We went on to the pitch in 10 groups of 50 at a time; to line up facing the opposite team that were wearing blue tops. The size of the stadium overwhelmed everyone one as they walked on to the pitch, the pitch its self was not that big but the stadium surrounding it was huge. It is amazing to know that we have stood on the pitch where so many rugby heroes have stood in the past and will stand in the future. Rope was laid the whole length of the pitch, between

each set of goal posts, to show everyone where they had to stand; we were in the second row so we stood behind the front row. Once everyone taking part was on the pitch a remote control helicopter with a camera attached to it started filming us. The footage was shown on TV and on the England Rugby website to advertise the tickets for the 2015 World Cup going on sale.

Aviva Premiership referee Wayne Barnes then started to tell us how to bind up, just like you do in a real scrum. You place your right arm over the person on the right and your left arm round the waist of the person on your left. After he told us this information the Director of Rugby started talking to all of us about how important the event was, while she was talking to us the rope was collected and a big flag was brought out, it had “Rugby

World Cup 2015” written on it. We then received the instructions to bind up in scrum formation and face our opposition. Wayne then listened to the scrummaging orders crouch, bind, set, the scrum was now under way and New Zealand scrum half Piri Weepu put the ball in the scrum, obviously there was no pushing because 1,008 people took part but we were allowed to hook the ball back. Once the scrum was over we became the official world record holders by taking part in the world’s largest rugby scrum. We gathered round the big flag on the pitch and had our photo taken. We then left the pitch, collected our things and made our way back to the bus to begin our journey home, it took 6 hours to get back but the time was not wasted as we all did school work on the journey home so that we did not fall behind in our lessons. We arrived back at 8.00 p.m. that night and our amazing experience was over but it will never be forgotten, it is the best experience of our lives so far and we are sure that it will remain there for a very long time.

PE Department Football

Year 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 boys teams along with Under 14 and Under 16 girls are playing in the English Schools FA National Competition, Stockton Schools League and District Cup and Cleveland Schools knock-out competition. The Sixth Form A and B teams are playing in the Cleveland Schools League and Cup competitions.

A very good start to the season for Year 7 boys, who are currently undefeated. A good start in the National Cup has seen them progress to the third round and in the Stockton League with an excellent 3-2 win over local neighbours Egglescliffe.

Year 8 boys have made a strong start in the ESFA competition progressing to the 3rd round after difficult games against Dyke House and Ormesby. The boys have made a strong start to the season winning all their games played so far in the league.

Year 9 boys remain unbeaten. They beat Manor 7-1 to progress to the 2nd round in the ESFA and won all their games to date in the League.

Year 10 boys are progressing very well in both the County and National cup competitions. They are playing some excellent football, scoring some great team and individual goals. If they keep training hard and play for one another they could have a very successful season.

Year 11 boys have had a great start to the season and are going well in all competitions. They have played well as a team to win all of their games, with a particularly impressive 10-0 win against High Tunstall in round 2 of the ESFA National Cup.

Girls Under 14 started their campaign on Friday 17 October against Nunthorpe. We are hoping for a successful League campaign this year.

The Under 16 girls were unfortunately beaten by Rossett in the ESFA National Cup losing 3-2. A very tough game narrowly losing in the last minute. Looking forward to the League with, hopefully, lots of victories to come!

Netball

All netball teams are continuing to play matches and are progressing well!

Rugby

The rugby season kicks-off with a series of festivals for Years 7, 8, 9 and Under 16 which are played through until March at Allens West, Eaglescliffe. All teams are playing well with some good results.

Tennis

Four students, Ben Dodds, Robert Hillier, Robyn Huggins and Emily Robson, represented Conyers at the Durham and Cleveland Annual Awards Ceremony at the Sunderland Stadium of Light to celebrate the teams’ successes. Conyers were named runners-up in in the Secondary School of the Year 2014 category for which they received a glass award, which is prominently displayed in the PE trophy cabinet. Congratulations to: Nathaniel Cornforth, Robyn Huggins, Izzie Ore, Ben Dodds, Robert Hiller, Brody Rankin, Ryan Johnson, Arya Kamyab, Lauren Purley, Laura Richardson, Emily Robson.
