Independence Day FestivalNow, to hear the membership talk,

you might think we’ve never had a dry Fourth of July since my infamous arrival at WHCC. So, I went back and checked the official scorecard and I now have verifiable proof that . . . well . . . that you’re half right anyway. As it turns out we are exactly 3 for 6 on the Fourth over the last six years, with a nice little dry streak from 2010 to 2012. But hey, 3 for 6 is a .500 batting average. Ted Williams got in the Hall of Fame bat-ting a paltry .400, but do I get any credit? No, nothing but grief!

Okay, now that I got that off my chest, the Fourth of July is almost upon us and WHCC is the place to be! The Fourth falls on a Friday this year, and I am sure that we will have a big crowd to enjoy all of the beautiful weather and wonderful festivi-ties that we have planned for you and your family. The inflatable Bounce Houses & Slides are FREE for all to enjoy! We have all of your favorite festival games including the Dunking Booth, Speed Pitch, Games of Chance, Pop a Shot, Skee-Ball, Chip Shot, Interactive Games for kids of all ages, the World’s Greatest Balloon Toss Contest, and much more! I hope that you are planning to spend the holiday with your family and friends at WHCC! Come out to your Club for a fantastic family festival with food, fun, and of course, FIREWORKS!

The golf course is in outstanding shape and there are plenty of great golf events including the Club Championships, Ladies’ Invitationals, and Couples’ Golf. New for July, the ever-popular Friday Night Patio Party has now evolved into the Weekend Patio Party, with Live Music on both Friday & Satur-day night out on the Back Patio! Success on the Golf Course

Dear Members,

Success in the game of golf is a very rare commodity—so when it happens, proper attention must be paid. Thus, congratula-tions go out to Barb Trotta, who made a hole in one on the par-3 12th hole on Memorial Day. Her 6-iron from 143 yards was dead solid perfect. Way to go!!

Susan McBeath and Trish Doyle also had success on the course in June. They won the Ladies’ Member-Member Tourna-ment with a 3-stroke victory over second place finishers Patty Hartoin and Linda Ratterman. One last note on successful ladies’ golf at WHCC—our Spring Team Play squad finished a very close second place in their city-wide inter-club competi-tion with other clubs.

On the Fourth of July (that’s Friday, July 4) we will have the Flag Day game to celebrate our nation’s independence on the golf course. It’s optional for those who wish to enter, and $10 gets you into this glorified version of a low net game. It’s open to all players who tee off before 1:00 pm. Just sign up that day in the Pro Shop.

We also have two Ladies Invitation-als this month, with the 18-Holers on Wednesday, July 9, and the 9-Holers on Tuesday, July 15. The Ladies’, Men’s, and Senior Gross Club Championships will be a 54-hole competition conducted over a single weekend, with no cut. The dates of that competition will be July 11, 12, and 13.

Then the Ladies’ and Men’s Net Club Championships will be 36-hole competi-tions held on July 12 and 13. The Girls’ and Boys’ Junior Club Championships will take place on the morning of July 17. Couples’ Golf will be an18-hole eightsome format with a 3:00 pm shotgun start on Saturday, July 19. Please sign up for all these events by calling the Pro Shop or by e-mailing me at markw@fuse.net.

GREENS REPORT

The Course Is Green and the Ponds are Stocked

The golf course is in full swing with lots of events scheduled for July, and things remain in great shape to this point. As with most years, during Cincinnati summers you can expect some thinning of turf, especially in the annual bluegrass portions of the course as the season progresses. This is to be expected, especially on older golf courses with higher percentages of this grass in the playing areas.

Please thank Brad Piecuch (assistant in charge of horticulture) for his work on the annual and perennial plantings all around the Club grounds. Brad selects the annuals in the fall, and the varieties he chooses are grown specifically for WHCC by Linda Fiest, owner of West Hills Greenhouse in Delhi. Many of these include tropical plantings, which will get more impressive as the summer progresses.

We recently completed installation of an oxygen-diffusing pond aeration system in the pond on the thirteenth hole. A small, one-tenth horsepower, energy-efficient compressor behind the maintenance build-ing pumps air into a diffusing plate at the bottom of the pond. This type of system is quieter and less expensive at providing a mixture of water temperatures to prevent fish kills and to limit vegetation growth. We have also restocked both ponds with additional grass carp (thanks to Jones Fish Hatchery in Milford for all the piscine advice). Part of my job is to occasionally check on the condition of the fish with my fly rod (someone has to do it). They are very healthy and are growing very large.

FAIRWAY FLIGHT

Don’t Miss Another Day in Paradise!

There’s still time to get together a four-some for the Fairway Flight Invitational “Just Another Day in Paradise” on Tuesday, July 15. This fun-filled event starts at 8:00 am with a continental breakfast and a putting contest, followed by a 9:00 am shotgun start. After nine holes of golf, you’ll enjoy a great lunch, lots of prizes, and some surprises, all planned by Janie Bier, Mary Shorten, and Bonnie Doepke. Cost is $45 per person plus cart. Entry forms are available in the Pro Shop. In case of rain, we’ll still have lunch and prizes. We hope to see you there.

The Fairway Flight welcomed 20 Golden Girls (ladies who are over 80) to a special luncheon on Tuesday, June 3. Each guest took home a corsage and a gold-dust-ed, gourmet cupcake. Thanks to Cheryl Sieve and Joyce Hendy for organizing this event and to Erlene for supplying beautiful and delicious birthday cookies for dessert.

Here are the recent winners of Fairway Flight events. On May 20, the game was Most Gross Sixes. In Flight 1, Mary Beth Baverman, Carol Ferguson, and Jean Oe-hler tied for first, while in Flight 2, Mary Moran came in first and Carole Wuest came in second. On June 3, the game was Best Score for 3 Mystery Holes (holes 3, 6, and 8.) In Flight 1, Sally Luebbe and Betty Elliott tied for first, and Mary Schiller was second. Mary Shorten was first in Flight 2, while Peggi Browning was second.

You can still join the Fairway Flight for this season and enjoy a relaxed nine holes of golf with the option of a quick buffet lunch and cookies every Tuesday. Call Jill Staubitz or Mary Moran for more informa-tion or just sign up in the Pro Shop.

The re-maining field in the first division next year are Hamilton Elks, Miami View, Terrace Park, Camargo, and O’Bannon.

Upcoming events for your calendars are the Invitational (Kate’s Cup) on July 9 and the Club Championship July 11, 12, and 13. Karen Hartoin and Laurie Brunsman will be happy to help with any questions about the Invitational. The Partners’ Tour-nament is already underway.

Summertime Is Fun Time for Garden Club Members

Summer is a chance for us to take in the beauty and enjoy the results of our creativ-ity and manpower in planning and main-taining beautiful garden spaces throughout the community.

Showtime for Summer GardensIn spite of the requisite dead-heading

and diligent watering this time of year, the payoff is sharing colorful blooms with an appreciative public. In addition to the pe-rennial garden near the pool entrance here, visit any of the Garden Club’s other instal-lations to see the “fruits of our labors.”

These include our historic garden at the Delhi Historical Society farmhouse, the herb garden at the Delhi Floral Paradise Gardens, and three large container plant-ings on the Purple People Bridge.

Garden Club members took a break at the annual Members’ Tour and Garden Party. This year Sherry Goodson opened her lovely gardens to the club.

Club members will once again be out-doors for our July meeting, when we travel to The Arboretum, State Botanical Garden of Kentucky, in Lexington, on Thursday, July 10, by charter coach.

The Arboretum is home to one of the most unique pant collections in the state. Horticultural gardens include a rose garden with over 1,500 cultivars. Of course, the day includes additional stops for unique shops and a special lunch.
