These days, both in the fashion and the
career world, women have begun taking
their power back by wearing whatever it is
they please them. Diversifying their looks
with more daring outfits and making them
acceptable within the presence of their
male counterparts and their superiors,
women are no longer bound by work
tradition. Now all that binds them is the
price tag, the designer, if their friend has
the same outfit and of course what sizes
the outfits are available in!
Are you trying to step into the world of
power dressing? Here’s a simple outfit you
can try. A body hugging black and nude

The African woman executive, who has
managed to climb the corporate ladder
despite the apparent inequalities in
corporate Africa, has to prove herself, ten
times more than her male counterpart –
just to stay on the job. Is this why many
female bosses not only find themselves in
the cross hairs of top management, but
are also largely ‘loathed’ by their
subordinates?
Employees in both top and mid level
companies from both genders almost
always prefer a male boss to a female
one. Maybe this is because, in proving
their worth in leadership skills, the female
bosses tend to be hard on the people who work for them. And maybe this is
compounded by the fact that, it is a rare occurrence in Africa to be
instructed by a woman.
Many employees claim women bosses are harsh,
continually change their mind about instructions and are
more likely to take disciplinary action that leads to someone
losing their job. Female employees in Africa are more afraid
of losing their jobs if they are headed by a female than if
their boss is male. The claim goes that female bosses in
Africa are more likely to fire a female employee than they
would a male employee even when all other odds are flat.
How far this is true can only be attributed to the general

truth behind women to women work relations
and is not really special to Africa alone. It is
widely known across the globe, women do in
fact sabotage the success of other women.
Whether this has anything to do with
jealousy or not, most female employees
would prefer the ‘old boys scout’ status quo
maintained.
But the African context has a special
b a c k g r o u n d w o r t h m e n t i o n i n g .
Unemployment is so high and the demand
for jobs is almost always triple the available
ones. Getting a job is hard enough for the
ordinary graduate in Africa. Keeping a job is
even harder. Once they get their foot in the
door, many people swear that they will do
absolutely anything possible to keep the job.
People become overly dedicated and grow
the thickest skin found in
these sides of the Sahara.
So, compound this with male
chauvinism and the gender
imbalance going on in most
African corporate scenes, and
the odds are clearly against

Despite the fact that women produce up to 80% of food in the developing
world, they often aren’t able to grow enough to feed themselves and their
families.
Agatha Akandelwa is one of these women. These days, she takes care of
21 people in her Zambian village, including her grandchildren and several
children of sick and deceased relatives. But sometimes it’s hard to find food
for her large family.

“Our food situation becomes very difficult every year, starting in about
September and lasting right through until January. During that period we
only get about one meal per day. I really don’t feel good during that time.
As an adult, I can go all day without food and then get up and go to the
field the next day, but I get really concerned for the children during the
hungry times.”
Concern Worldwide works daily with women farmers like Agatha through
our ‘Women for Development’ program. We help provide them with tools
and a little money to invest in seed—and so far the women farmers have
seen lots of success. They’ve not only been able to grow enough to feed
their families, but they’ve also been able to use the income from their extra
food to send their children to school and keep their families healthy.

Lawns:
It is vital that a lawn is mowed as frequently as is required. This free up the
grass roots to receive nutrients as well as help in reducing weed
infestations. Also, adding organic matter to the top soil enhances the soils
fertility and productivity. Research the kind of turf grass that you have and
fertilize it adequately according to a lawn maintenance calendar, i.e. during
warm seasons, fertilizer is vital etc. Apply fungicides to stop disease
infection right from the start. This will all help to keep a healthy, green and
long lasting lawn.
Flower Gardens:
To ensure that you are doing your landscaping properly, be on the lookout
for thrips. Thrips are insects that attach themselves mostly to roses. For a
garden of beautiful roses, it is important to constantly check for the
browning of the edges of rose petals as they occur very quickly. Another

that grows on many plants, roses and myrtles included. Thirdly, adequately
drain ponds to ensure fish have clean water and ensure the garden has
rain barrels as that will help you collect unwanted water.
For fruits and vegetable:
Irrigation is key to a successful fruit and vegetable garden. In the event that
you have tomatoes, prune them by removing the leaves that are on the
lower parts of the stems. This would make them less prone to diseases.
For strawberries, thin them to 12 inches after a harvest, and for vegetables,
ensure that they are picked at maturity time and no later, this will ensure a
