Lambda Theta Chapter of NYU Issue 2: February 2012 The Spring 2012 semester at NYU has gotten off to an incredibly progressive start. As soon as our Lambda Theta sisters came back from winter break, I knew that everyone was ready to fulfill all the hopes and dreams we had for the upcoming weeks. In late January, two of our first Inter-Greek events were hosting tables at “Meet the Greeks” and “Clubfest” at the Helen and Martin Kimmel Center for University Life. Zeta Tau Alpha had the opportunity to show our peers what our fraternity stands for, teach others about our philanthropy, and talk with young ladies about potentially joining ZTA. Lambda Theta hosted our first “Kiss Away Cancer” Philanthropy event in early February. Hosting a table at the lobby of the Kimmel Center, ZTA was able to hand out a bag of Hershey’s Kisses© to everyone who donated to Breast Cancer Awareness and Education, along with shower cards and Think Pink ribbons. Special thanks to all of our sisters who made a contribution by donating and helping out with this event! Sisterhood has become a continuous theme throughout the month of February. Our connection as a chapter has been strengthening as we have all gotten to know each other better. With recruitment headed our way, our bond will bring us closer together. I’m looking forward to two wonderful nights of recruitment events and I anxiously await the arrival of our eight new Zeta Tau Alpha sisters with open arms. Our forecast for spring suggests many great service, philanthropy, social, and sisterhood events including: Zeta Day, NYU's Greek Night, Mixers, and Senior Prom. Keep up all the hard work and positive attitude sisters! A Message from Olivia Segarra, Chapter President

Lambda Theta Chapter of NYU

Issue 2: February 2012

The Spring 2012 semester at NYU has gotten off to an

incredibly progressive start.

Zeta girls love pink, especially when the color is associated with the fight against

breast cancer. Hosting their first philanthropy event, Kiss Away Cancer, the sisters

of Lambda Theta continued to demonstrate their dedication to breast cancer

education and awareness. After setting up a table in NYU’s Kimmel Center, the

sisters handed out Hershey Kisses in exchange for donations. Contributors had the

option of giving a kiss in return: lipstick was provided for those willing to kiss a

banner and sign their name or the names of loved ones, who have fought, or

continue to fight, the battle against breast cancer. Donators also had the option of

memorializing and celebrating family and friends by writing their names on pink

ribbons. These ribbons will be

displayed at future events as

NYU ZTA proceeds in its

philanthropic mission of breast

cancer awareness and

education.

Taping of a Martha Stewart Show

Valentine’s Day with Martha Stewart? What lonely, NYU girl could pass up a thing like that? Not this one, nor could seven other NYU ZTA’s. We spent the morning being given instructions on how to make roasted duck for that distant-future significant other (we can only dream) and Swarovski crystal heart pins (so at least we can look pretty). Martha herself and her crewmembers were so generous and fun. If you don’t have a date next Valentine’s Day consider spending it with Martha Stewart. By Megan Powers

A Thank you from Martha:

Hi ZTA at NYU,

Thank you and your sorority so much for attend the Martha Stewart Show. I hope you all had a fabulous experience. You were all great to communicate with and I wish you all the best. Thank you for being so reliable! Our whole department enjoyed your company. If you would like tickets for a future show please be sure to contact us. Delta Phi Epsilon Charity Date Auction

The sorority Delta Phi Epsilon held its annual Date Auction and boy we're our girls lucky! Many different men and women from various fraternities and sororities attended the event to bid or be bid on in exchange for a date. Bids went anywhere from fifteen dollars to almost three hundred dollars, and all proceeds went to Relay for Life! Some ZTA girls were bid on for “a night on the town.” The DPhiE sisters were grateful for our support and are excited for more of our participation in the future! Overall the event was a great success and we were happy to get involved and build relations within the Greek community.

Senior Spotlight: Ruma Mazumdar

Name: Ruma Mazumdar NYU School: CAS Major: History and Business Studies ZTA position: Alumnae-Collegiate Relations Chair Favorite Color: Turquoise Favorite quote: “You live and you learn.” Two fun facts about yourself:

1. I can understand 5 different languages and love to travel. 2. I love reading fashion, food, and legal blogs.

What were some of your accomplishments/involvements during your time at NYU?

Being at NYU for college was an accomplishment in itself, but while here I really embraced the city and all it had to offer. I was involved in a ton of community service projects, the Undergraduate Law Society, as well as the South Asian scene for dance competitions. Being a founding member of ZTA is also a huge honor. Related to my career path, I’ve been working at different law firms since my freshman year and last summer I interned with one of the top music law firms in the city that deals with some of the most famous names in music.

Do you have plans for the future?

Upon graduation, I will be working in the city as a paralegal and then I will apply to law school in October. Ideally I want to stay on the East Coast and eventually be able to work at a law firm in the city that focuses on entertainment law. However, I might want to work at the UN someday, so international law may be something else I will try to explore.

Why did you choose to get involved with ZTA as a senior?

“Zeta is Forever.” The motto really tugged at me as I went to the information sessions after being hounded down by the amazing TLCs during the October Recruitment session. I’ve been involved with many things in college and have my close group of friends as well as a smaller family I feel like I belong to among my senior class at NYU, however ZTA was a chance to leave my comfort zone and connect with amazing women, not only on campus, but nationally as well. Since ZTA was also known as a very reputable and the fastest growing women’s organization in the Panhellenic community, I knew I wanted to be a part

of something bigger than myself. Further, the leadership opportunities, alumnae groups to join upon graduation, and the new, intelligent, intriguing women I’d meet during my mere 8 months as a college student, really enticed me to accept a Bid during Preference Night.

What lasting memory do you think you will be leaving with Lambda Theta?

Since it is only a short amount of time, I hope to be remembered as a supportive, involved, and fun sister. We have an amazing group of girls and I want to leave knowing each and everyone of them. Also, as the first set of seniors to be leaving Lambda Theta in May, I want to be sure we leave some exciting traditions behind for all the future Zetas of this chapter to follow.

How has your time with ZTA changed you?

It has definitely forced me to move out of my comfort zone and make more of an effort to really get to know my sisters. On the other hand, it has exposed me to a bigger network of women as well as tons of opportunities in the future. Knowing I’ll have a support system no matter where I go makes it a little easier to come to terms with the fact that I will be leaving this wonderful place called college behind very soon and entering the dreadful place we call “reality.”

Our Lambda Theta ladies are proving that striving to make our lives a symphony of high ideals extends beyond the bonds of sisterhood. From noteworthy internships to theatrical lauds, our ladies are making strides to pursue their academic and professional endeavors. Congratulations are in alphabetical order for the sisters below!
