July 2020 New York State Officer Report NYS Officer Team Managers: John Fernandez & Brandilyn Steves President: Advisor: Alayna Trautman Ms. Ivory Hello!! I hope everyone is doing well. The rest of the New York team and I have been doing well and working diligently with the Leverage Trainings. Our leverage training is online on the mycareeressentials.org website. There we complete a series of eModules biweekly. On Monday they come out; the Thursday of that week our trainer Brianna Vanderlaan holds a Zoom meeting with our team and advisors to discuss the eModule that we have completed along with important news. Our first eModule came out July 6, followed by our discussion zoom meeting scheduled on July 9. Due to some complications the zoom meeting was postponed to July 23. The second eModule came out July 20, followed by our discussion zoom meeting on July 23. In that meeting we covered both eModule one and eModule two since the meeting for the first one was postponed. Our New York State SkillsUSA Officer Summer Leadership is coming up. It is being held August 3-5 at the Embassy Hotel in Syracuse, NY. Although some of our team unfortunately cannot make it due to the circumstances going on in the world today, they will still be able to attend via zoom. At Summer Leadership we will go over things such as; Officer duties and responsibilities, professionalism workshops, opening ceremonies, our fall leadership, presentations and team building activities. In the last month I have had the opportunity to join both the New York State SkillsUSA board meeting along with the Reopening Schools Regional Task Force meetings. The New York State SkillsUSA board meeting was held July 8, where I gave a brief speech about how our New York State Team was doing and what we have been doing. Due to a medical issue that day I was not sure if I would be able to make the call so I reached out to two of the other officers Isaac Akyigit and Matthew Rosado who were able to join In case I could not make it. Fortunately I could make it but they helped me along. Thank you to them for being able to help on such a short notice! The Reopening Schools Regional Task force meeting was held on June 23, on the call we got split up into breakout rooms and they asked a series of questions to students about opening back up schools. I am very glad I got the opportunity to join both of these meetings!!! Secretary: Advisor: Paula Hernandez Mrs. Essig This month for skills we did modules which was very fun because we learned new and valuable information. The most important info I have learned is the POWERR formula. The POWERR formula meaning is Pre Work, Outlook, Wisdom, Engagement, Review and reflection. This helps a lot in speeches etc. I am very excited to be going to Syracuse for 3 days in August and get to meet all my peers. But I am also sad because some of them cannot go due to COVID which is sad because I wanted the whole group to be together. I am very excited though for the new experiences to come with my peers and to have new challenges ahead of me along with my pers. I can't wait to make new memories. New experiences are always a good thing. I truly am happy to be a part of this amazing team and to represent this amazing organization. Thanks to the team I am more confident than ever and I appreciate the support of my team.

This month for skills we did modules which was very fun because we learned new and valuable information. The most important info

I have learned is the POWERR formula. The POWERR formula meaning is Pre Work, Outlook, Wisdom, Engagement, Review and

reflection. This helps a lot in speeches etc. I am very excited to be going to Syracuse for 3 days in August and get to meet all my

peers. But I am also sad because some of them cannot go due to COVID which is sad because I wanted the whole group to be

together. I am very excited though for the new experiences to come with my peers and to have new challenges ahead of me along

During the month of July 2020 as a New York State skills USA officer, there were a few zoom calls that we joined and discussed what we were going to do in Syracuse. In the beginning of August we will be meeting each other in person and starting to learn what is actually like to be a New York State skills USA officer. The month of July wasn’t very action packed, but in the months to come we will be achieving greatness.

Treasurer: Advisor:

Leslie Patino Mr. Sulla

Hello! My name is Leslie Patino, and I am honored to be your NYS SkillsUSA treasurer. These past two months as a State Officer have been great, as well as getting to know all the other leaders a little bit more and getting comfortable. Although we haven’t been able to meet in person due the worldwide pandemic of COVID-19, we as a team, still manage to be able to keep in touch with each other whether it’s through the group chat with our team managers, or our Snapchat group chat which only consists of State Officers. Virtual Leverage training with Bri has been helpful and exciting. Virtual learning wasn’t the best for me at the beginning but having to deal with it and having to get all my school work done pushed me to get through it with a positive mindset. By all means, I was able to get used to it which I don’t regret because it did help me get through virtual leverage training. Completing the assignments aka e- modules on our own and then reviewing at our meetings is a plus in my opinion because it allows us to complete the modules at our own pace and take notes. Bri has been doing a great job and I can’t wait for the day we finally get to meet the entire team together! I am beyond excited for Summer Leadership, I can’t wait to meet some of my fellow teammates that are able to attend and for those who aren’t able to attend I still look forward to meeting you guys in person, and always remember we are a team, we will get through it together !

Hello everyone! This month in SkillsUSA the NYS team and I have been learning a lot about each other and what our future holds for

us in SkillsUSA. This month we’ve had a few leverage training sessions with our impeccable trainer Bri! She’s really helped our team

come closer together and really went into depth on these e-modules to make sure we all understand the elements that go into being

in this one of a kind organization. We also got the chance to talk briefly with the national director Chelle Travis and have our picture

taken in an online session which I think is incredible that even though we can’t meet in person we’re still able to get a group photo.

In this month's training so far I've learned that communication goes such a long way in the longevity of your team but also aids in the

success of your team. This is because a good team suffers without the proper communication skills from each member. We’ve also

talked about the four pillars which are the industry’s standards for what makes a great leader, to make a great leader they must have

trust, stability, compassion and hope. These are the core elements of a leader but they aren’t the only skills you will need and Bri has

done an outstanding job of making sure we know this. In the second e-module this month it goes into depth about the POWERR

formula. This formula is to help us form our speeches but also other things such as our framework stories. What this POWERR

formula stands for is pre-work, outlook, engagement link/engagement preview, wisdom (2 evidence, 2 main points and 2 action)

why this has so many parts is because it’s the meat of your story/speech and to follow this up is your final review and reflection.

These all followed properly create an outline for you to prepare a speech that should grab the audience's attention and keep the

content in your speech not repetitive or dull. We then finished this module off by writing our own SkillsUSA story and sharing a few

in our meeting with Bri. Overall I'm very proud of my team and me for overcoming the difficulties that are happening all over the

world right now but also the craziness of our day to day lives.

This past month has been hard and stressful but it was so worth it, The work wasn't as hard as I thought it would be and I got

through it very easily. I am very excited to go to summer leadership and get a feel of what it'll be like with the team in real life. It has

definitely been an adventure working virtually but it has also been a fun and new experience. This year's team is great and will do

great things, I can already tell, all my teammates are very high spirited and I am excited to see what they come up with for this

upcoming year. I am excited to know that this year’s team will go down in Skills History. We can do it, I know we can I am looking

forward to seeing what this upcoming month brings us and the state of New York and all of SkillsUSA.

Officer At Large: Advisor

Lauren Sulaiman Miss Olfano

Hello everyone! My name is Lauren Sulaiman and I am your New York State SkillsUSA Officer at Large. For the month of July, our officer team participated in the Leverage Training program to develop the skills that are important for the remainder of our service. The purpose of this program was to learn how to work in a team environment while focusing on the essential elements of leadership, job-specific skills, and communication. The training was divided into four modules, each containing a lesson that revolved around the development of a SkillsUSA leader. Our team completed e-modules one and two for July. The first module was opened around the beginning of the month and was called “Leading, Acting and Communicating with the Four Pillars”. The four pillars are four traits that are most valued in a leader, this included trust, compassion, stability, and hope. Before the module, I was not familiar with this concept, but after I completed it I understood how to implement these four traits into the way I communicate and interact with others. Also, included in this module was a learning journal, where we answered prompts and took notes throughout the demonstration. The learning journal aligned with the content in the e-module, which made it easy to apprehend the information that was being presented. There was a knowledge check and evaluation towards the end, which wrapped up our thoughts as well as the knowledge we learned throughout the module. Furthermore, after completing module one, our team was assigned to e-module two. This lesson was titled, “Defining and Using POWERRful Communication through My Framework Story. I learned about the format known as the POWERR formula, which stood for Pre-Work, Outlook, Wisdom, Engagement, Review, and Reflection. These are the components that make an effective speech, presentation, or workshop. In this case, we used the formula, to develop our own framework story. A framework story is a two to three-minute speech that centers on how a member was impacted through the essential elements within the SkillsUSA framework. Just like module one, a learning journal was given to help document the information within the demonstration. I read several examples of framework stories from previous state officers and learned how they utilized the POWERR during an important event. After analyzing the effectiveness of this format, we were asked to create our own framework story based on the positive impact SkillsUSA has had on us. My story focused on an experience that took place during my first SkillsUSA competition. Like most people, I was nervous and anxious about being exposed to such a competitive environment and I let my nerves get the best of me. My mindset was negative and this made me lose hope even before I was chosen to present my demonstration. To resolve this matter, I decided to say a few inspirational and positive messages to myself, and little did I know it drastically changed the atmosphere. I was not longer nervous, but instead, I was confident and proud of my work. The framework essential element that I exhibited in my story was, self-motivation, and my overall message for the audience was to always believe in yourself when you approach a challenge. After completing my framework story, I noticed how I used the POWERR format to effectively share my message and realized that it could be utilized in various types of ways. Moreover, to wrap up the two modules, our officer team had a virtual meeting with our program facilitator, state managers, and state director. In this meeting, we discussed the information within our learning journals and shared some of our answers to the prompts. I realized how valuable this information was in my development as a state officer. Overall, I found these lessons very interesting because they introduced me to new concepts which are not only useful as a state officer, but also as a student. I am very interested to see the final two modules that this training program has in store for us.

Area I Vice President: Advisor:

Anna Pokoj Mr. Rozewski

Since I left out my introduction in my June report I thought I would take the time to do that in this report. Hello! My name is Anna Pokoj, I am your 2020-21 NY SkillsUSA Area 1 Vice President. I am from Dunkirk New York which is outside the Buffalo area in Western New York. I attend LoGuidice educational center where I take Health careers. At LoGuidice I am active as a student ambassador, and as the SkillsUSA president in our chapter. At my home school Dunkirk High school I am a model marauder student as well as an active member of the student council. During the school year, I volunteer part of my time to being a religious education teacher to middle schoolers. Most summers I spend my time working and volunteering my time at Dunkirk Camp and Conference Center where I am a counselor to kids of all ages. Now that you know more about me I can get into how my experience as a state officer so far. We have now started the e-modules for our Leverage training. On the 23rd of July, we attended another Leverage training via Zoom. Our latest training was about our framework stories and how to tell a story to keep an audience engaged and we also learned about how to take advantage of using the POWERR formula and applying it to everything as an officer. Along with the POWERR formula, we went more into depth about the four pillars of leadership and how the pillars can make a positive impact on our team’s performance. I have learned so much already from the few meetings we have had online. I cannot wait to meet some of my amazing team when I attend fall leadership in August.

Area II Vice President: Advisor:

Matthew Rosado Mrs. Petronella

This was a very different way of training for this month, but I learned a great deal. We had two meetings focusing on teamwork and speeches. I am having a great time working with our facilitator Bri . I also attended the SkillsUSA Board meeting introducing myself and describing what we, as a team, have been working on. I am looking forward to summer leadership to receive more training and work with the other State Officers and getting to know them better.

Area III Vice President: Advisor:

Lauren Reynolds Mr. Zwart

July has been a very productive month, so far we have gotten through our very first module of Leverage Training, and have moved

on to the next one. We've learned so much these past few weeks, and it's honestly been so much fun. I think having to learn and

communicate through solely technology has made us push ourselves so we can better improve our skills. We've had to find new

ways to accomplish tasks, and come up with ideas to be able to really connect with our teammates. I feel like our team has already

grown so much these past weeks, and I can't imagine how much closer and stronger we'll get as time goes on. This month we have

also been discussing the summer event in August for Skills, and even though my BOCES won't be going, I'm still excited to see what's

in store for us all. Overall July has been an extremely productive month and I'm excited to see what August brings.

This month my fellow officers and I were able to continue the leverage training course. We were able to do this through two different e-modules. The first one taught us about the four pillars of leadership. These are trust, compassion, stability and hope. It is my goal to implement all four of these pillars into my leadership. I hope to be worthy of your trust, and that I am someone that you can come to if you need anything. I want to inspire hope in all of you about your own future and the future of SkillsUSA. And of course I want to provide stability as a leader. The other e-module we completed this month taught us about the POWERR formula. This formula is used to write speeches and presentations. This will help us write speeches that will be presented to all of you. We finished the month with a zoom call to discuss what we had learned on our own. I am excited for next month and to continue the leverage course work as well as our summer leadership conference.

Area V Vice President: Advisor: Isaac Akyigit Miss Olfano

This month seemed to go by very fast, as many of the prior months have, despite all the things that occurred. Looking back, I can

remember two main challenges that my team and I had to overcome. The first challenge arose when our President was unable to

address the New York State Board because of a medical condition. Fortunately, due to the quick thinking of our President along with

our advisors, the speech was split between myself and another state officer. Thankfully, the speech went very well and our President

is feeling better. The second challenge that we were all forced to confront was the postponement of one of our Leverage training

sessions. This meant that we had to combine two lessons into the next scheduled session. I am very happy to report that this was

done seamlessly, and even may have made the lessons more applicable to our current situation. As mentioned time and time again

in last month's report, these challenges only make us stronger in ways that would otherwise never be possible to accomplish. This

month was similar to the last month in the sense that the team continued to bond via leadership education. One of the biggest

takeaways from this month would most likely be the fact that communication is not only about speaking, but is also about listening

and taking advice.
