WORLD AIDS DAY AWARDEES – 2014

Mathilde Krim, PhD: Mathilde Krim, an AIDS researcher dedicated to better understanding the virus and increasing the public’s awareness of AIDS, is the founder of the American Foundation for Aids Research (amfAR), a non-profit organization that is devoted to laboratory and clinical AIDS research, AIDS prevention, and the development of sound AIDS-related public policies. In addition to being amfAR’s founding chair, Dr. Krim was, from 1990–2004, the Chairman of the Board. She holds 16 honorary doctorates and has received many other honors and distinctions.

Janet Parker: Janet Parker is a social worker at the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Health Program-Downtown (MSCHP-Downtown). She has been working on HIV prevention and care for over a decade. Janet is single-handedly responsible for many successful connections to care, linking to care individuals newly diagnosed with HIV, those who have fallen out of care, and those at risk. She works directly with City STD clinics and breaks down all barriers to link patients to services.

Hector Quiñones: Hector Quiñones has worked in the field of HIV/AIDS for over 17 years. He is currently the Director of Social Services and Linkage to Care at the After Hours Project. Hector’s responsibilities include supervision of HIV/STI testing, case management, linkage to care, medical transportation, treatment readiness, syringe exchange, and Hepatitis C screening. Hector is a proven champion of the community, always bringing the client’s perspective into every planning conversation. Additionally, Hector serves tirelessly on the Brooklyn Knows Steering Committee and subcommittees.

She is responsible for translating key messages for the community in a way that all community members will understand.

Positive Life Workshop Peers: The Positive Life Workshop seeks to help NYC residents living with HIV increase medication adherence and reduce risk behaviors through peer support and health education. The peers have been an integral part of delivery of the Positive Life Workshop since the fall of 2011.They teach and motivate people with HIV by sharing their own life stories as examples of overcoming obstacles and taking important steps to manage their health.
