What is Generative Design?

As currently defined by public statements

Generative design encompasses a design

process that involves algorithms.

It is a technology that mimics nature's evolutionary

approach to design.

It is used to design complex shapes and optimized

forms in relationship to forces, cost, weight, and

other data that may influence the design.

It starts with design goals and then explores all of

the possible permutations of a solution to find the

best option.

Convergent Modeling Technology

Work directly with facets, surfaces and solids

Remove need to reverse engineer facet data

Eliminates the error-prone, costly process of

rework, while supporting new manufacturing

techniques for complex and irregular shapes

such as 3D printing

Enables solutions like Topology Optimization

to seamlessly fit into the design process

Design with Convergent Modeling

Modify generative models by adding precise geometryCombine facets with

precise geometry

Prismatic features Freeform features

For visible parts that require

generative design, you need

some human influence on the

shape, finish for aesthetics,

brand recognition etc.

Model Based Definition

• The benefits for adopting MBD are widely known and accepted by customers across all industries

• MBD Adoption – not if, but rather when

• Customers are transitioning to MBD and looking for ways to be more productive and competitive

The Promise of Model Based Enterprise

Improved Clarity and Usability

3D Model Based Definition is the single source of truth

The human mind can understand three dimensional data

more readily than two dimensional data resulting in a shorter

learning curve

Companies are more efficient with reduce costs

It is more efficient to reuse and organize the 3D information

then recreate that information in a drawing

Drawings results in more files to be managed, additional time

needed to recreate product information, and more chances of

error

30% total product

Convert to PMI

Capabilities

• “Convert to PMI” command from Drafting converts piece part or assembly

drawings to PMI

• Each drawing view is created as a corresponding PMI Model View

• Most drafting annotation objects can be converted to PMI

(e.g. title block, drawing borders and tabular notes are unsupported)

• Drafting settings are preserved in the PMI Model View

(e.g. layers, cross hatching, fore/background rendering, hidden components)

• Converting drawings to PMI via batch is supported

• A report will be available to document the results of the Drawing conversion

Customer benefit

• Supports company Model Based Definition initiatives
