NX Learning Edition

This is meant as a guide to purchasing and installing NX Learning Edition, and should help to de-

mystify the process. The process is:

1. Software is purchased from Journey Ed or Academic Superstore or other software site.

This will require:

Providing proof you are eligible for the Learning Edition

Providing your Host ID or MAC address so they can enter the order with

Siemens PLM Software

2. Siemens PLM Software will then

E-Mail you your Web-key Access code and License File

3. Access the support.ugs.com web page

Use the Web-key Access code to create a Web-key account

4. Download the software

Download the software

Download the documentation

5. Install on your system using the provided license file.

The process is not too difficult, but there are stumbling blocks along the way, and this guide is

meant to prevent you from falling into them. It is a step by step guide to lead you through the

process sequentially.

Purchasing the software

The software runs on either MAC 64 based machines, or Windows 64 machines. This guide will cover

the Macintosh process.

Most of the communication about your order will be done via e-mail. Make sure to provide a valid

account, and make sure to check your spam folder for any communications that may have gone astray.

Providing proof of academic standing After you order the software, you will be requested to provide proof of academic standing. You can

either scan and e-mail the information to them or fax the information to them; you will receive an e-

mail like the following (this is an example from JourneyEd):

> Siemens: NX 9 Learning Edition - Annual License (Electronic Software Delivery) (Windows) > Product ID # 1307799 Qty: 1 After you send in valid Proof of Academic Status you will receive an email from JourneyED with this info:

> Please let us know as soon as possible if you see any errors with this order by calling us at 1-800-874-9001 or emailing > us at [email protected]. > > Customers who ordered only products that advertise 'No Eligibility > Required' can disregard this email. > > If you are already a JourneyEd customer with information on file, simply reply to this email and change the subject of > the message to "On File". We will verify that your ID is current and complete your order processing. If there are any >problems, we will contact you immediately. > > If you are a new customer, verification of eligibility should be > scanned and emailed to [email protected] or faxed to 1-888-486-2341. > Please reference your order (#148****) when submitting information.* >

> If you have any questions or comments please call us at 1-800-874-9001 or e-mail

[email protected]

Providing your host ID Validating your proof of academic status usually takes a couple of days. Once that is done, you will get a

second e-mail requesting your host ID. This is an extremely important step. The host ID you provide

must come from the system on which you will run the software. The license file that allows you to run

the software will be tied to this host ID. If you get it wrong, the software will fail with a licensing error.

The e-mail request will look like (again the following example is from JourneyEd):

From: JourneyEd [email protected] We are unable to process your order #148**** at this time due to the following academic eligibility issue(s): ** Please supply the "Host/Server" id from the computer that the license will be installed on. Once we receive this we will be able to send out your order. Finding your Host ID – If you have TCP/IP installed, run ipconfig/all from a Command Prompt window. Click Start, then Run, then type cmd in the text box. Type in ipconfig/all in the Command Prompt Window. The 12 –digit Physical Address for your Ethernet Local Area Connection is the same as the host ID. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Finding your host ID on Macintosh On Macintosh you must provide the MAC address for the local area ethernet adapter. To get this, first

start up a terminal window from /Applications/Utilities/Terminal:

Page 3: NX Learning Edition - merchandising.s3.amazonaws.commerchandising.s3.amazonaws.com/Siemens/NX9 Student Edition... · To install, navigate into the nx-ugdoc-9.0.0 directory and then

Once the terminal window starts up you can query your local area adapter MAC address using the

command:

ifconfig en0 ether

Once you have determined your host id you must e-mail or fax it back. The host ID above is

00:16:cb:98:e9:b9

Siemens PLM contact Siemens PLM will then process your order and add you as a customer, using your host ID to generate a

license file for the software. The NX Learning Edition is only available via download. The download is

quite large (2.3GB for the software and 1.8GB for the documentation). Make sure you are on a direct

connection to the Ethernet and not a wireless connection when you try and download. Also choose the

fastest connection you can.

Siemens PLM will send you an e-mail that has your license file as an attachment. You must save this

attachment as a file on your system. Remember where the file is, you will have to browse to it during

the installation of the software. Also provided in the e-mail will be your Sold-to ID and webkey access

code. This is what will be used to create a webkey account so that you can download the software. The

mail from Siemens PLM will look like the following:

account here:

https://plmapps.industrysoftware.automation.siemens.com/webkey/both_step2.jsp?product=ANY

By entering your Sold-to ID and Webkey access code from the e-mail sent to you by Siemens.

Downloading the software Once you have a webkey user account, you can re-access the download site as often as necessary from:

http://support.industrysoftware.automation.siemens.com/gtac.shtml

Installing Learning Edition and Documentation

You must install OpenMotif and XQuartz to run NX Learning Edition. If you have not yet downloaded

and installed them; you can get OpenMotif from:

http://www.ist-inc.com/DOWNLOADS/motif_download.html

And XQuartz from:

http://xquartz.macosforge.org

Install them prior to installing NX 9.0. XQuartz version 2.7.4 or higher should be used. The install screen

serves as a reminder you must install XQuartz first. If you do not, required NX resource files will not be

copied into place on your system.

Installing NX Learning Edition Double click on the nx090_learning.mpkg to start the installation of the software:

Here, it is extremely important that you select Choose License File and then browse to the license file

sent to you in the e-mail from Siemens that you saved earlier in the process, and select that file. This is

what licenses the software, and if not done properly the software will not run.

When you finally click to install, you may be presented with a screen prompting for your password:

The installation process will then run to completion, and put the Application in the

/Applications/Siemens directory.

Version Support

Your NX Learning Edition license file is version specific. Each license file will support the current release

and also any earlier release. The license file will not support later versions. So for example an NX

Learning Edition 8.5 license file will not work to run NX Learning Edition 9.0. However an NX Learning

Edition 9.0 license file will work to run NX Learning Edition 8.5. This information is contained in your

license file on the FEATURE line:

The number following ugslmd specifies the version of NX:

27.0 – NX 7.5

28.0 – NX 8.5

29.0 – NX 9.0

Trouble Shooting The most frequent source of problems is a license file that does not match your Host ID. If this happens

you will get the following error on starting up NX Learning Edition:

To check this, you can use the NX Licensing Tool which is located in the

/Applications/Siemens/NX9.0_Apps/NX Licensing Tools folder. Running this Application and selecting

Environment Settings will display the Host ID that is needed to generate a proper license sheet for your

system:

Page 16: NX Learning Edition - merchandising.s3.amazonaws.commerchandising.s3.amazonaws.com/Siemens/NX9 Student Edition... · To install, navigate into the nx-ugdoc-9.0.0 directory and then

The Host ID circled above must match the Host ID in your license file which will have been copied to

/Applications/Siemens/NX9.0/ugflexlm/nx_license.lic:

Page 17: NX Learning Edition - merchandising.s3.amazonaws.commerchandising.s3.amazonaws.com/Siemens/NX9 Student Edition... · To install, navigate into the nx-ugdoc-9.0.0 directory and then

If the numbers do not match, a new license file must be generated using the Host ID as shown by the

Licensing Tool.
