Game Show Style Knees Up Nov 12 Preparations are afoot for a FUN, musical, swim club game night out, game-show style. It takes place Friday November 12th, from 8pm upstairs at Spirit (non stick!) and aims to raise £2,000 towards coaching development programme and certification, 50m pool hire charges and our women only swim night services. The evening kicks off with some lovely chill out music and nibbles to get you in the mood. Soon there will be games! The likes of which you probably haven’t seen since your 10th birthday! Themed venue décor and stage will compliment your Sunday best! And set the theme for some truly memorable and possibly slightly silly, game show challenges. In keeping with the Nation’s austerity measures, and the environ- ment, of course, Madame David Hutton has instructed (lash!) the welcome team not to waste too much time dirtying clothes! As the mood of the evening ripens, there will be opportunities to buy raffle tickets (Good prizes) and for those who want to shine the beacon of good hope and generosity, we have a special auction of surprises! As the witching hour approaches, the unadul- terated pleasures of dance will ensue! Powered by King Author’s favourite and Buxton’s most fabulous DJ ever, The Knight Himself! Entry is free, friends and family are welcome, so come along and have some fun and help support your club. Thanks go to the organising team of Club volunteers, we love you so much! WAMM 2010 11 June 2011 For only the second time in the world, as far as we know, there will be an International women's swim competition (1st was Berlin 2006), it is being organised by Northern Wave Women, it will be called WAMM (Women's Aquatic Meet Manchester). A team of 4 NWSC women, Hana Kubacova, Imogen Beasley, Katy Walker and Lucie Brione, will work to-gether to deliver this historic event. They identified possible funding streams, created a delivery plan and then set about writing a funding bid to the British Council which was submitted late August. The bid requires the team of 4 to be coached through to event delivery and this role has gone to club chair, Trevor Burchick MBE, who has organised many similar events in recent years. It will take place in the newly re-furbished Broughton Baths at Pride Games 2011. The team will need the support of other volunteers from NWSC (inc men) to help deliver this special tournament. Just in case, a secondary funding plan has been put in place by MIke Felse, our Funding Officer (thanks Mike).

After 5 years as club’s Head Coach Rob Ward is sadly leaving us for pastures new. After completing his PHD Aerospace Engineering, Rob is moving south to join the Royal Navy. Newsweek are running a feature on this and we have managed to get hold of an exclusive, a first draft of the front cover. Doesn’t Rob look great in his sailor’s suit! Back to the swimming……..during Rob’s reign the quality of coaching has improved dramatically. This is down to the care and attention to detail that Rob has brought to the job. Since he took over he increased session mileages by over 40% on Sundays and over 30% on Tuesdays. As well as our success in the Gay competitions Rob has also encouraged more swimmers to compete with the straight folk in county, inter-counties, regional, national and European level masters’ competitions and we have had some notable successes. Under Rob our medal tally has been huge. And we know that it is greatly appreciated that Rob’s swimming sets are never boring or repetitive. This is especially true at the annual training camp where Rob manages to make the 7 hours of swimming interesting and fun. And the drag relays are never to be forgotten. Unlike many coaches who are drawn towards the better swimmers it is noted that Rob has really concentrated on bringing through members who have just previously swum on a social basis to very high standards, many competing in masters events and gay competitions. Latterly in preparation for his departure Rob has been working hard on bring through new coaching talent from within the club so that we are in great place from a coaching point of view when he leaves. Rob is having a leaving party at Taurus starting late afternoon on Sunday 5th December. Everyone is welcome to attend. The Sunday swim session for the evening is cancelled because it is also the weekend of the popular Frankfurt event.

Cheers Rob!

Welcome & Congratulations to our new Coaching Team

You may have noticed over the past few months that we have quite a few new coaches on poolside, Chris Trzeciak, Chris Neilson, Edwin Lace, Hana Kubacova and Wendy Hull. Our Head Coach, Rob Ward, has invested a lot of time and energy into the Club's coaching development programme, including spending lots of time developing the coaches themselves (Thanks Rob). Congratulations are in order for their great results so far; Hana has just com-pleted her level 2 certificate and is looking to start a level 3, Chris T has completed his level 1 and is planning for level 2, Chris N has completed his level 1 and is working to level 2, Wendy has completed her level 1 and is soon to start her level 2 - All in coaching.

Membership System 2010 One of the features of this new system is that swimmers are able to record their own swim times within the system. If you wish to do this, you will need to request a user ID and password from Club Secretary, Peter Martin on

[email protected]

For a sneak preview of the new system, Peter has set up a test swimmer link and a test ID. Go to:

Hogwarts Swim Camp 2010

This year we held our Swim Camp at Hog-warts, alias Rossall School, Fleetwood. In the end, 44 swimmers attended, of which half were women. Hogwarts big benefit was the price! Almost half price compared to Lancaster. All those who said they wanted to go got a place. We had a lot of very positive feedback and a few gripes about the noisy dormitory doors. Coach Michelle pushed the top lane to revolution, so we agreed that next time we should all be made aware of the nature and purpose of the training sets. We had a Fabulous Pink Flamingo exercise in preparation for the Gay Games. All in all a worthwhile and successful weekend. A big thank you to Mike Lane for organising it. For next year we are looking for a new location. If you have any ideas contact Mike Lane.

Club Swim Gala January 29th

Our first big event of 2011 will be a swim development and training gala. It will be held in a 25m pool with proper diving block and electronic timing, plus a warm up pool. It is to be held at Salford’s newly re-furbished Broughton Baths. Over £1 million pounds has been spent on upgrading its facilities and equipment! We will use this opportune ity for further devel-oping our coaches and as part of a training programme for new volunteer officials in preparation for WAMM June 12th. A simple reg-istration process will be put in place.

Swim 21 Update Northern Wave is committed to achieving a club quality mark standard, called Swim 21. It is about managing our club better, keeing in touch with members more easily, speed-ing up processes and preparing our club for a healthy future. The process of achievement is designed to engage more members in running the club, to increase quality of operations and its sus-tainability for the future. Accreditation opens doors to new club support funds, discounts and other support. Our elected committee is now joined by a team of co-opted members that help run the club and deliver projects: Edwin Lace, Marie Coquet, Paul Knight, David Hutton, Daniel Altman, Lucie Brione, Michael Felse and Becky Drew - more are welcome! To enable the team to function more effec-tively the Club has bought new software called swim Club Manager and led by our secretary Peter Martin (Thanks Pete). Enabling us to co-operate more efficiently, and keep in touch with our members. A portfolio of evidence is being prepared by Mike Felse, ready for submission to a panel of asa officials early 2011.

Did you know Northern Wave has its own swim shop with SRS Leisure. It can be found on the home page of our web site. There is a wide range of swim products at very competitive prices and 15% of sales revenue is paid into the Club bank account. So the next time your shop-ping for swim accessories, please give it a try.

Manchester Aquatics Network Northern Wave recently joined a network of Manchester area swim clubs, which offers a range of valuable benefits. Access to help, sup-port and funding opportunities, plus a goal to reduce pool hire fees for network members. It also offers us a chance to recruit swimming offi-cials and coaching support.

Award Winning Parade Entry

Congratulations to our fabulous Pride Parade Team for 2010. The Team, led by Paul Knight (Thanks Paul), brought together a fun, theatrical and artistic entry based on an idea by Edwin Lace, which he called Swimakins! This big team saw us modelling swim wear through the decades without emotion, but lots of atti-tude (Thanks Chris). We learnt 4 shop window positions and on command (by a special lady we hadn't met before!!) the group turned to face their nearest crowd and posed! As I said, it was a big team effort and thanks go to the whole team, individual contributions and our sponsor, Proud City. Incidentally, our entry was personally endorsed by Sir Ian McKellan, who thought we did a fantastically imaginative job! high praise indeed! Once again, well done everybody.
