Foreword by our Präsidenten Gerard P. Hoogveld

Dear Members and colleagues in Horizontal Directional Drilling, Dear Members of DCA,

The year 2006 is getting to an end, many large HDD projects are still underway. Our business is further developing with more rig owners over Europe, large projects demand not only many rigs, but also crews, people and personnel, that know Directional Drilling. Only then the many projects underway can be brought to the desired completion, as expected by every project owner. Talks about quality and the required certificates, contract forms and how to start a project in order not to meet deceptions (which happens too often if the soil problem is not recognised) are always a valuable topic amongst our members. “Contract forms” and “soil”, they both determine the contractual relationship. However next to this is always the very important day to day contact between the two contractual parties and their will to solve upcoming problems in a realistic and amicable way. With our annual congresses we try to meet our industry, discuss these and other matters of importance, and warn all concerned for the mistakes that we/other already made in the past. There is no substitute for experience, and we could learn from experience from others. If more HDD projects develop, and they all go right without exception, only then we are satisfied. That will not happen, but at least we could work on that and desire, that unexpected matters are solved in a reasonable way and are considered normal in the day to day communications. We all just met at our annual congress in Den Bosch. One of our lectures from Sweden said: “what ever the soil is, drillable or undrillable, I will have a solution to accomplish the crossing.” That is where we should go to.

The English contract systems, such as “NEC 3, ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT, OPTION C”. would also be a solution however this only is a contractual change of the project agreement, for sharing “gain and pain”. This could be necessary in case something is asked on a lump sum and the scope is not as foreseen in the available data at the start of the project. A paper was presented on this during our Münster congress last year, and the author would be most happy to further lecture on this to companies that internationally work and which companies have to follow this contract format. 11th DCA Europe Annual Congress Optimistic and confident foresight

Artur Graf zu Eulenburg, chief editor of the professional journal bi-Umwelt, reports on the DCA Europe Annual Congress in Den Bosch:

About 125 participants attended the Annual

Congress 2006 of the Drilling Contractors

Association (DCA – Europe). This second highest

number of participants, right after the Annual

Congress 2001 in Strasbourg, shows a very good

and compared to previous years an increasing

response. Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, offered an

attractive ambience. But the slowly clearing

economical situation of this sector, which led,

besides the modified structure of dues, to an

increasing number of members of the DCA, as

well as the well prepared topics of this 11th

Annual Congress, are probably the main

reasons for this enormous feedback.

Congress Room in the Hotel Golden Tulip

Both, the subject “Geothermie – a Future for HDD?”

and the question, if this regenerative energy might

possibly offer an acceptable perspective for the

horizontal drilling branch, is nowadays of great

concern of various companies. Against this

background listening to reports of companies, which

already successfully gained access to this business

area, was extremely interesting.

First of all one has to distinguish between surface

close and deep geothermie:

The deep geothermie uses the heat of the earth’s

core. It provides high energy potential, which can be

allocated by corresponding power plant technology

as long-distance heating or electricity. According to

Mr. C. Scholz, FirstGeoTherm GmbH, in his

introducing lecture, the essential drillings require

special features of both, technology and humans.

Hence, geothermal drillings are placed preferably

close to housing areas, always obeying the

requirements of noise protection. Drillings depth up

to 5000 m are clearly deeper adverse to the

standard hydrocarbon industry. With increasing

depth, temperature rises as well, so that the thermal

stress on drilling equipment is much higher than

usual.

C. Scholz, FirstGeoTherm GmbH

DrillTec GUT GmbH meets this challenge for years.

General Manager Michael Back, pointed out the

risks and chances of this business and prognoses

despite all difficulties a good future.

Discussion about Geothermie-

The first barrier is however hard to take:

Roundabout 15 millions Euro has to be invested in a

drilling plant. The lack of skilled employees is

another problem. Facing a boom in the drilling

industry, employees of the hydrocarbon

industry as well as of the oil and gas sector are

DCA NEWSLETTER No.21 - December 2006 English Version

No. 21 – Page - 3

fiercely wanted and well paid. Michael Back offers

all interested companies, which want to access this

sector, his consultation and assistance.

Less expensive and less complex are the technical

conditions for drillings from 60 m to 100 m to utilise

the surface close geothermie. An interesting and

expanding market can be expected, according to

Mario Hermsmeier, Bohrtechnik Beermann.

Proprietor Ewald Beerman has already founded a

company, Beermann & Windmann GmbH, which is

specialised on geothermal drillings.

Workshops

Of course discussions were focussed on ongoing

topics about the horizontal drilling techniques as

well. Highlight of the Annual Congress were once

again the five offered workshops. There topics were:

• Drill String Failure –

Prevention and remedial Action

• Balance between Quality Assurance

and Risks

• Stuck Pipe, what’s to do?

• Alternatives Types of Contracts for

HDD Projects

• Planning a Real Project

Paul Prediger, Flowdrill, Introducing a HDD Project

Lectures about absorbing construction sites topped

the successful meeting of a branch, which looks

ahead with optimism and confidence.

Social Evening Rounds off Successful Congress

After the workshops on Thursday the DCA invited to

a common dinner at Kastell Maurick in Vught near

Den Bosch. In the still of evening, a bus took the

participants through narrow streets out of Den

Bosch over numerous bridges southwards. After a

short motorway drive towards Eindhoven, the bus

turned eastwards until Kastell Maurick was reached.

The castle is situated in a vast forest and is

surrounded by a moat. After a merry reception in the

orangey at the inner courtyard, President Gerard

Hoogveld gave a brief description of the castle's

eventful history in his welcoming. Afterwards the

winner of last year's Golf Tournament in Münster,

Mr G. Paulisch of TDC Technical Duroplastic

Constructions Ltd. from Trollenhagen, was

honoured with a challenge cup. Between main

course and dessert everybody had the chance to

dance. The DCA invited all participants to the

second wing of the orangery for this purpose. The

door opened, and accompanied by thunderous

applause Mr Saturday Night Alan Kerstan asked

the participants of the congress for a light-hearted

dance.

Cocktail reception

45 minutes of music offered the opportunity to relax

without thinking about business and to celebrate

with the DCA. After this joyful musical excursion

with several encores a delicate dessert followed,

and then the bus took everyone back to Hotel

Golden Tulip. And here the bar was invitingly

opened. All in all the trip to Kastell Maurick and the

Saturday Night Show was a success; many

participants, and the ladies in particular, said it could

not have been improved.

Review HDD-Workshops 2006 5 Topics

The workshops, which were initiated two years ago

for the first time, met great approval and feedback.

At the beginning of the workshops Mr Lübbers,

board member, explicates the aim and the

requirements of the discussions.

The aim of the workshop is:

to enable a professional and factual discussion

between European clients, contracting business,

engineers, administration and supplier. An open-

minded discussion about the differences between

planning and execution, technical requirements in

various European countries as well as the approach

of current topics is aspired.

Mr Lübbers, Nacap, introducing the HDD Workshop Topics

Workshop 1: Drill String Failure – Prevention and remedial

Action Dr. Hans-Joachim Bayer, Trakto Technik GmbH Dipl.-Ing. Günter Kruse, LMR Drilling GmbH

In this workshop the practises to avoid drill string

failure which are usually applied in the oilfield were

presented: Sizing of components, proper design of

drillstring, inspection, optimizing of drilling

parameters, observation of hole condition. The

discussion reflected that all participants in a way

followed these rules, but there are no standardized

rules for inspection with regard to intervals and

scope. A selection of fishing tools to retrieve lost

parts from the hole was presented. A lively

discussion including case stories followed.

Workshop 2:

Balance between Quality Assurance and Risks Freek Noorman, Visser & Smit Hanab Gerard Hoogveld, LMR Drilling

In an HDD project several parties are involved. In

order to make such a project a success each party

has its own responsibilities and tasks. It is of

paramount importance that each party takes these

tasks and responsibilities seriously and make sure

that the quality of their output is high and thus up to

standard.

Only then a project can be successfully

accomplished. The success of a project is directly

related to the individual qualities.

This workshop was attended by a mixture of clients,

contractors, consultants and others, so the perfect

audience!

With help of a questionnaire on an imaginary

project, where a lot went wrong, a discussion was

held on the role and influence of each party and on

the final quality of the project. It was a lively

discussion, in which each party gave without

reluctance its own opinion on the several issues. It

was however surprising and a bit disappointing, that

there is still quite a cap in the opinions of the

different parties involved on other parties problems.

Conclusion was, that we together have to discuss

more and longer to develop a better understanding

on HDD and the HDD contracts.

Workshop 3:

Stuck pipe, what’s to do?

Dipl.-Ing. Gerhard Herrmann, Neuenhagen

Dipl.-Ing. Hermann Lübbers, Nacap B.V.

The tensest moment of every HDD project is the

last step: pulling the pipe through. At this point the

whole crew can finally tell whether the hole, that

was created, can actually accommodate the pipe

without any problems. Each irregularity in the bore

hole can lead to problems with pulling the pipe

through. Increased pulling forces, pipe deformities

and damages to the pipe coating lead to

disagreements between the client and the

contractor. But the real disaster is a stuck pipe.

When that happens there are arguments between

the clients, the insurance company and other

involved parties about the reasons, who is

responsible and how to solve the problem.

DCA NEWSLETTER No.21 - December 2006 English Version

No. 21 – Page - 5

This workshop intended to identify which variables

may cause such situations, how they can be

positively or negatively influenced and what can be

done when the pipe is stuck.

This topic caused in the most favoured workshop a

lively discussion

Workshop 4:

Alternatives Types of Contracts for HDD

Projects

Jörg Gänger, DrillTec GUT GmbH

Michael Back, DrillTec GUT GmbH

Incentive Day Rate Contracts for HDD Projects

In the HDD industry the contract between the HDD

drilling contractor and the client are mostly on lump

sump basis. In this form of contract the client wishes

that the contractor considers all risk in his price. This

leads to the following problems:

The offer price is often too high since a serious

drilling contractor must consider all possible risks in

his price.

From the offers submitted it is often difficult to

compare the technical quality of the drilling

contractor, since every contractor has calculated his

price with a different risk factor. The experience

shows, that low offer prices often have been

calculated with very low risk factors. In case

problems occur during project execution this always

leads to disputes.

In the last two years a few of HDD projects have

been executed on the basis of incentive day rate

contracts. The experiences from this projects show

that this form of contract leads to a win-win situation

for the contractor and the client, the project

execution is smoothly, and, compared to a turn key

project, the drilling costs are significantly lower.

In this workshop the advantages of an incentive day

rate contract in comparison with lump sump

contracts, and the possible forms of incentive day

rate contracts were discussed.

Workshop 5:

Planning a real foreseen project: expected 52”

crossing in Holland

Jan Spiekhout, N.V. Nederlands Gasunie

Gerard p. Hoogveld, M. of Sc. (Delft), LMR-Drilling

Technical questions concerning the calculation of

bending radii of the top bow for huge drillings were

mainly discussed during this workshop. After having

explained the existing calculation methods Mr Jan

Spiekhout, N.V. Nederlands Gasunie showed

alternative examinations. Subsequent to the well

attended workshop, which was created far after the

printing of the official programme of the Annual

Congress, the board decided to discuss this topic in

line of the update of the technical guidelines.

Ladies on Tour

Like in the past years, the DCA's 11th

annual

congress in Den Bosch, The Netherlands, met

with a sound response.

The event of three days lasted from October 11 –

13, 2006 and started on Wednesday afternoon from

Hotel Golden Tulip at the market of Den Bosch with

a tour of the city in two languages. A skilled guide

from the tourist office presented the town on foot.

The tour passed the city hall, the Saint John's

Cathedral and numerous historic facades and led

towards the berth where the boats on river

Binnendieze stop. The river partly runs

subterranean through the city. It invited the

participants of the city tour to a very special

attraction: Small open boats led by experienced

boat guides took the visitors through the canals of

Den Bosch. They cross the city in form of a tight-

knotted web and sometimes are very shallow and

narrow. A beautiful closing of this city tour was

offered by a visit to the bar Zomers & Zomers near

the berth, where the local variety of beer found

many customers. In cheerful rounds several glasses

were emptied.

„German Group“ guided tour in Den Bosch

On Thursday, October 12, 2006 the official ladies'

programme of the DCA was offered. The ladies

visited the biblical open-air museum in Heilig

Landstichting, about one hour's drive east of Den

Bosch near Nijmegen. There they saw a Jewish

village with several houses and a synagogue, a

caravan inn, an Arabic village and the Via Orientalis

of the Roman Empire. Life in biblical times became

illustrated by many actors in traditional clothing that

were busy with everyday work. After having

regained some strength during a lunch at the

Roman inn, the second part of the programme was

still to follow: a visit to the city of Nijmegen. An

experienced guide took the group to numerous

sights of the town, like the gothic St. Stevenskerk,

the city hall, the city scales on the big market and

the Valkhof with its Barbarossa ruin. Then the

participants of the ladies' tour returned back to Den

Bosch.

Participants joining the boats tour in Den Bosch

The day found its conclusion for all participants of

the DCA congress with a common dinner at Kastell

Maurick in Vught. The dinner in the castle's big hall

offered Italian treats and created a lively

atmosphere where the beer was delightful. The

good mood was topped by the Boogie star Alan

Kerstan, who brilliantly managed to activate his

audience. It turned out to become a very nice

evening.

On Friday, October 13, 2006 and thus the last day

of this year's annual congress of the DCA, the

ladies' programme offered a shopping tour in the

centre of Den Bosch. The ladies strolled through

numerous boutiques and shops. Situated among

historic buildings in the old part of town with its

medieval market place are many elegant designer

and antique shops, jewelleries and gift shops. Many

street cafés invited for a stay.

DCA Golf cup: Golf is business

Gerard Hoogveld reports on the outcome of the traditional golf tournament in Engelen/Burggolf Haverley,

near Den Bosch;

Friday 13. October 2006.

This club has an impressive clubhouse, with lots of golfers, a very nice shop

and 18 holes for playing on a nice and sunny Friday afternoon. That is how all

congresses should end.

Between 13.30 and 14.00 hrs, two flights “tee-off” for the DCA cup!

Unfortunately it does not look like some years before a “Riders cup”, the most

famous match between America and European top teams. Unlike other years,

our American participants are not there for reasons of other business, health or

pleasure. Regretfully, only 7 competitors left over, have to take it up against

each other as an European match: One German, five Dutch and one French

person start the game. (Flight 1: Hans Ringers, Freek Noorman,Gerd Paulisch

Gewinner 2005, Jack Butterworth – Flight 2: Marga Noorman Gewinnerin

2003, Mike Woning, Gerard Hoogveld)

Two weeks earlier, both your executive secretary and your reporter were present checking out the club, the

clubhouse and its facilities. Excellent! No problem. The golf course itself stayed an open question, as then and on

Wednesday morning the 11th

October, the commencement day of the DCA congress, the course could not be

checked by playing it! Extreme high expectations we had, however the course was not as the one we have seen in

Antwerp and Munster. On the Friday afternoons, everyone plays in flights of 4 persons, and the game goes slow!

This did not have an effect on the golf pleasure. Once coming back in the clubhouse around 19.00 hrs, it even

started getting dark however we still could sit on the terrace and enjoy a few drinks.

Golf-Course in Engelen/Burggolf Haverley Gerd Paulisch, Winner of the Golf Tournament 2005

Who won? Mike Woning, the youngest of all of us.

He played from handicap 24 and he scored 35 Stableford points, followed by Freek Noorman (34 points) and

Marga Noorman (32 points). Because of this score Mike has found himself a place in the list of DCA golf

tournament winners. Bravo Mike, trust we will see more of you in the future!

The surroundings of the golf, shows a remarkable form of housing. Blocks of houses that looks like being set up

as a castle. Each different block is built in its own stile, and it gives the impression, if you play golf here, you walk

in between various old medieval castles of different people. A new modern design for houses that today is only

partly occupied and partly unused and for sale. Architects and investment companies have transformed this

“polder area” in to a new area for living and of course use the (still) exclusivity of golf in between the “castles” to

make this area more attractive. Even if you do not play golf, have a look, it is only 6 kilometre north of Den Bosch

exit Engelen of the North side motorway of Den Bosch.

Further Information from the Association and the Members

13 new members in 2006 –the DCA beats itself! Active member in Spain

Dietmar Quante, executive secretary, reports once again on positive numbers according to member promotion at the annual congress in Den Bosch. Furthermore a Spanish company called Catalana de Perforacions S.A. from Santpedor nearby Barcelona entered the association. During and after the congress several conversations with interested companies were held.

“The DCA has invested a lot in members’ promotion in 2006. The result is presentable, because 13 new members can be named since the Congress 2005 in Münster.” This high number outmatches the planed scores of the association.

HDD Drilling Companies

In the sector HDD drilling companies with mainly small and medium pants, which are the main target group of the DCA, four new companies could be registered.

Subsequent the four companies are briefly introduced:

Located in Bodenheim close to the Rhine and about 14 km away from Mainz, the company Bohrservice Rhein-Main – Gesellschaft für Horizontalbohrungen mbH, represented by. Mr Lang, Mr Illner and Mr Mataré, is a company for horizontal flush drilling with long-time experiences and modern equipments. Catalana de Perforacions, S.A. is a company founded in 1984, and pertaining to the group Aquacenter®, specialized in vertical drillings for subterranean water harness and horizontal directional drilling. In 1997 the horizontal directional drilling division imported the know-how of this technology into the Spanish market, which substitutes the trench opening, street closings and pavements raising. The system consists of a pilot borehole, composed of a steering head and pliable drill rods, which enable the directional drillings execution to dodge the existing obstacles in their layout. This method, quick, clean, ecologic, allows ducts installation, such as water, gas, electricity, communication and also the installation below freatic level of sea drainages, beaches regeneration, grounds decontamination, collectors reconstruction and extension. The system allows the crossing of large rivers, roads and motorways, mountains and any natural obstacle since, when using drilling fluids, it is possible boring below the freatic level in a quick and effective way. To make sure the quality control to become 100 % the company egeplast together with HESSEL Ingenieurtechnik have established a Full Quality Testing Cycle including all types of multilayer tubing of egeplast. Based upon the regulation of DVGW to have a time period of using the tubing to become 50 years the minimum laboratory based methology is using time-scaling procedures. This is similarly compared to the quality assuring procedure of standard tubing made out of PE materials for standard deployment with sandbed, described in DVGW Arbeitsblatt GW 335. But the details are quite different: production lots have to be checked periodically, tubing parts e.g. T-tipes, elbows, Y-tipes to be checked in simulating the maximum of real practical afford and additionally checking up the technology of connecting and extrusion. Based upon the wide-range well established research-work and testings completed the egeplast safety pipes made from PE100 RC

plus are reaching and

fulfilling all specification details of a secure, trenchless deployment, being technically state of the art and economically optimized. Basic research has been made on all aspects of production and application. Continuously monitoring and quality control on the 100 % level make sure the maximum of security for customers´ application to be reality.

DCA - ARGE Deutscher Leitungsbau

Pipeline construction 2006 (Rohrbau Weimar, Germany)

Strategies for maintenance of pipe works

In line with the two day lasting scientific-technical congress of pipeline construction in Weimar a discussion about

strategies for maintenance of pipe works was held by Arge Leitungsbau. Subsequent an extract of a press report

by Arge Leitungsbau, written by the association construction of pipelines (rbv) is printed.

Discussion in line with Pipeline Construction Weimar

Press report: Decline of population claims new solutions

Kranz: “Pipeline systems have to be payable and functional”

Weimar: 30.11.2006

According to Mr Kranz, congressman of the Lower House, the decline of population in Eastern Germany leads to

great problems in waste water and drinking water systems. Mr Kranz called securing the technical infrastructure in

areas of high decline of population as one of the main challenges in Eastern Germany. “The aim is to keep

pipeline systems payable and functional” said Mr Kranz. At the congress of pipeline construction, which ended last

Thursday, Mr Kranz explained, that completely new solutions are needed especially in rural areas since the

demographical change. The removal of superfluous pipelines guarantees, that pipelines will not lie idle. Slightly

used drinking water pipelines run the risk of getting polluted and might endanger the supply.

A negative result concerning the renewal of pipeline systems in Germany in total was drawn by the president of

the association construction of pipelines (rbv) Mr Küsel. Lifesaving methods like maintenance, detection of holes

and repair improve the pipe work situation indeed, but there is no substitute for the complete renewal of pipeline

systems. “We need strategies of maintenance for all areas of supply and waste disposal”, demands Mr Küsel. He

claims for generally accepted standards for the dimensioning of the lifespan of pipelines. He appeals to the

supplier to pass the pipe work over like they hope to get it. Mr Kranz pointed out, that “we all have the social duty

to keep the infrastructure in good order”. This even applies to subterranean pipe works.

In the discussion, that followed, representatives of supplier and constructing engineers discussed about possible

strategies for maintenance and care of pipe works. The representatives of Arge Leitungsbau demanded more

investment and planning security for their line of business. Erich Böhm, board member of E.ON Thüringer Energie,

emphasized the importance of a deep partnership between supplier and pipeline construction companies in order

to gain more efficiency in supply and waste disposal.
