Hunter and Equitation Divisions

Warm up: Open to all. Judged warm-up rounds can be ridden before any class EXCLUDING any Medal or Jumper class.

Leadline: No age limit. Horse or pony must be led/controlled by a quali�ed horse leader. Entrants may not enter any other classes in the show.

Open Hunter: Open to all. Fence heitght choice of 2’, 2‘3”, 2’6“, 2‘9”, or 3’. Rounds will be ridden throughout the day as course heights are changed for other divisions. Under saddle class will go before the Pony class starts. Riders will be asked to show at the walk, trot and canter in the under-saddle class.

Beginner Hunter and Equitation: Amateurs only. This division is for entry-level riders only. The purpose of this class is to provide an initial showing experience for individu-als. Rider may not enter any other classes at show. The course for this division will be rider choice of four (4) poles on the ground or 18“ crossbars set as two (2) lines, one line on each side of ring. The rider will jump once around only. The rider may trot the entire course or trot to the line and cantor away. Riders may not canter in to any �rst fence of a line. On the �at, the riders will be asked to show at the walk and trot in both directions. No cross-entry into any other division is allowed by that horse/rider combination.

Intermediate Hunter and Equitation: Amateurs Only. The course will be 18” crossbars with diagonal lines or a single fence present including �owers. The rider may trot the entire course, trot to the line and canter away, or canter the entire course. On the �at, the riders will be asked to show at the walk and trot in both directions. No cross-entry into any other division is allowed by that horse/rider combination.

Baby Green Hunter: Open to all riders, limited to horses in their �rst or second year of showing. The courses are simple with seven (7) or eight (8) small 18” crossrails jumping into lines and verticals jumping out. On the �at the riders will be asked to show at the walk, trot, and optional canter in both directions. Choosing not to canter will NOT be penalized.

18” Hunter and Equitation: Amateurs Only. The courses are simple with seven (7) or eight (8) small 18” verticals. Entrants are encouraged to canter the courses. On the �at the riders will be asked to show at the walk, trot and canter in both directions.

Adult Hunter: Riders must be 18 or older. Amateurs Only. The jumps will include 18” verticals jumping in and 2’ verticals jumping out. No oxers or �ll except for �owers. Riders will be asked to show at the walk, trot and canter in the �at class.

Pony Hunter: Open to small, medium or large ponies. Amateurs only. Fence height choice of 2’ or 2’3” regardless of pony size. Rounds will be ridden through day as heights changes for other divisions. Riders will be asked to show at the walk, trot and canter in the under-saddle class.

Very Low Hunter (Previously 2’ Hunter and Modi�ed Hunter): Amateurs Only. Rider choice of 2‘ or 2’3“, to be judged together. Small oxers no wider than the height of the fence. Riders will be asked to show at the walk, trot and canter in the under-saddle class. Points earned at April Season Opener in 2’ Hunter adn Modi�ed Hunter divisions will be applied to this division for 2021 year end awards.

Education Equitation (2’-2’3”) and Scholarship Equitation (2’6”-2’9”): Amateurs only. Scholarship class. Riders may choose fence heights. Rounds will be ridden throughout the day as course heights are changed for other divisions. Open to all amateur riders regardless of age or membership. However, riders wishing to compete for the scholarship must meet the following requirements: · Must be in 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade · Must ride in a minimum of 4 scholarship divisions during the 2021 show season · Member in good standing with NWAHJA, and completed a minimum of 40 volunteer hours (as detailed in application) · Grade Point Average of 2.5 or higher · Essay, and letter of recommendation from trainer or teacher due Dec. 1, 2021

NWAHJA Hunter: Amateurs Only. Fences not to exceed 2’6”.

Low Hunter: Amateurs Only. Rider may choose fence height of 2’9” or 3’ to be judged together.

Medal Classes: Junior and Amateurs only. Equitation classes. The rider must be a member of NWAHJA in good standing and the horse must be owned by a memeber of NWAHJA in good stnding to enter this class. This is an equitation class over a course that is moderately more di�cult than a typical hunter course. The course stresses competent and accurate riding skills. The top four riders after the 1st round may be called back for additional testing. All riders accumulating 13 points or more in their medal division through the show season will qualify for the medal �nals held at the NWAHJA Year-End show. There will be qualifying medal classes held at the Year-End Show with the �nals held aftter. Two (2) riders are required fo r the class to �ll.

2’ Medal: 2’ fences, may have oxers with maximum spread of 2’. USEF Tests 1–6 may be used for work-o� at judge’s discretion.

NWAHJA Medal: 2’ 6” fences. USEF Tests 1–13 may be used for work-o� at judge’s discretion.

Progressive Medal: Rider may choose from heights 2’9” or 3’. At any time during the show season, the rider may choose a di�erent height, lower or higher. The course must also include at least three of the following: bending lines, narrow jump (6’8”), rollback turn, fence at the end of the ring, long approach to a single jump. To be judged on style and execution. Upon completion of the over fences phase, all riders will be asked to come back to the ring for a �at phase on the same horse. Riders will be asked to show at the working walk, working trot sitting, working trot rising, and working canter. Top 4 riders after both phases may be asked for additional testing, with judge’s choice of course and USEF Tests 1-19. To be judged on the rider’s position, seat, and the correctness and the e�ect of the aids. Distances will not be adjusted for ponies. Riders may not cross enter into any other medal class.

Recreational Riding ProgramThe Thoroughbred Recreational Riding Incen-tive Program (TRRIP) is designed to recognize and reward Thoroughbred owners and riders that enjoy recreational riding or driving on a regular basis. There are prizes associated with each hour level, beginning with 25 hours.

ChampionshipsThe Jockey Club hosts an all Thoroughbred Championship Horse Show with champion-ship divisions for Hunters, Jumpers, English Pleasure, Dressage and Western Pleasure. T.I.P. o�ers championship awards for eventing at the United States Eventing Association's American Eventing Championships.

Young Rider and Non-Competition ProgramsT.I.P. o�ers a Young Rider of the Year Award and a Youth Ambassador Program as well as a Thoroughbred of the Year Award which recognizes a Thoroughbred that has excelled in a non-competitive career, such as equine-assisted therapy or police work.

Any rider may compete in Outreach hunter, jumper, and equitation classes, but riders wishing to earn points and national recognition, must be USHJA free Outreach member or higher.

Competitors with a USHJA free Outreach membership or higher will be eligible to earn year-end awards and rewards in hunters, jumpers and equitation. Rewards for competing in any USHJA Outreach Class (Hunter, Equitation, Jumper) will be based on total points earned. Riders achieving a Bronze, Silver, or Gold point level will be eligible to redeem their points at year-end for items of their choice: USHJA logo wear, Bronze, Silver, or Gold Outreach ribbons or Outreach medallions.

• High point Awards: The highest pointed Gold level rider in each Zone will earn the Golden Back Stage Pass to participate in USHJA National Championship A�liate Sections, and will be invited to participate in the Grand Prix Show Jumping and Hunter Derby course walks, and educational sessions.

• Trainers Awards. Trainers who are USHJA free Outreach members or higher will be awarded points based on their students competing in Outreach classes (student must be a USHJA free Outreach members or higher). One trainer from each Zone whose riders have earned 100 or more points cumulatively, will be recognized as the USHJA Outreach High Point Trainer.

• Horses Awards. Owners of horses competing in Outreach Competitions and Classes wishing to have their horses earn points towards awards must register their horse with USHJA ($20/year or $75 lifetime). Horses are not required to be registered with USHJA or microchipped to compete in Outreach classes.

Rules and Guidelines 1. Proper show attire required. ATSM/SEI protective headgear required when mounted.2. One-year negative Coggins is REQUIRED and will be checked upon arrival.3. To help us ensure that everyone is checked in and has signed a release, please wear your number during schooling!4. All divisions are pinned through 8th place. Ribbons will be awarded for Champion and Reserve Champion. Only horses receiving points over fences are to receive under saddle points toward determining champion and reserve champion of each division. ALL year end awards are 1st through 8th, no matter the division.5. A horse/rider combination may only cross enter divisions with fence heights of a six (6) inch di�erence. This includes �at/under saddle classes, jumper classes excluded.6. A horse/pony may not be ridden in more than 11 individual classes per show day. This limit does not apply to any “challenge” classes or the leadline division.7. In the event that a division does not �ll (3 or more riders) and cannot be combined with another division, the class will run with half points being awarded. Medal classes require only two (2) entries to �ll.8. Entry into one over fences class in a division is prohibited. Riders must enter the whole division or only the under saddle/�at class.9. The One Minute Rule will be enforced at all times. A rider will have one (1) minute to enter the arena when called or be disquali�ed in that class. Out of respect for other competitors and the judge, this rule is not up for discussion. Be prepared!10. The NWAHJA Show Steward is on duty for show safety, management, schooling, and questions. Please do not approach the judge during the show.11. Any horse or pony known to kick must wear a red ribbon in its tail as a warning.12. A formal request from a rider or trainer to view the judge’s card can be made to the Show Steward. The rider and trainer must wait until after the last class of the day to speak with the judge.13. It is a NWAHJA policy that ANY help or encouragement from the ringside by adult guardians or instructor/trainer is prohibited.14. Horses owned by a registered NWAHJA member may receive a year-end award once the horse has competed and received points in that division in a minimum of 2 NWAHJA sanctioned shows during the year.15. A rider in an equitation or medal class or division may receive a year-end award if the rider has competed in and received points in that class or division at a minimum of 2 NWAHJA sanctioned shows during the year.16. A rider will not be disquali�ed for the purposes of this rule if, by virtue of when the rider becomes a member of NWAHJA, the rider competes in and receives points in all shows at which the rider was eligible to accumulate points during the show year.

Scholarship Opportunities My Ride Scholarship Available to any member who is riding in 18” or 2’ equitation and: • Exhibits good sportsmanship • Rides in at least 4 shows in the YEAR season (18” or 2’ equitation) • Completes at least 10 hours of volunteerism with NWAHJA by November 14th • Applies to be considered as a candidate by DATE • Submits essay and letter of recommendation from trainer by December 1st The recipient of this award will receive all equitation and medal classes at NWAHJA shows for the following season free. Member may not be awarded this scholarship more than two consecutive years in a row.

NWAHJA Education Scholarship Available to any member who is currently in high school (9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade) and: • Rides in a scholarship division in at least 4 shows during 2021 • Has a grade point average of 2.5 or higher • Completes at least 40 volunteer hours as detail in application • Submits essay and letters of recommendation from trainer and teacher by December 1st. The recipient of this award will be awarded continuing education at an accredited college or university. Member may not be awarded this honor more than two consecu-tive years in a row.

Volunteer Hours In order for a NWAHJA member to be eligible for a year end award, they must volunteer 4 HOURS for the organization over the course of the show season at NWAHJA shows or sponsored events.

Sign up today by contacting our Volunteer Coordinator, Kristen Gemeiner, to set up hours to volunteer. A family member or friend may volunteer for the rider. In the event a member is unable to ful�ll their hour requirements, $50 may be paid to NWAHJA for every unmet hour.

Volunteer of the Year awards will be given to those with the most volunteer hours at the end of the year!

Privately Sponsored TrophiesSerendipity Award To be awarded to the school horse/pony earning the most points in classes beginning with Beginner Hunter and Equitation and moving up. Multiple riders are acceptable. If a one day show format is used, Open Walk-Trot points will count as Maiden Hunter and therefore count for this award.

Spirit Award To be awarded to the rider, 17 and under, who has exhibited good sportsmanship and horse-manship skills throughout the year both at horse shows and at their home barn. At the end of the show season, trainers may submit in writing a descriptive paragraph about the exhibitor to the NWAHJA Board. This is not about the number of points accumulated or the number of ribbons won, but about kindness, self-control, generosity, and putting the horse’s needs �rst.

Kit Kalypso Award To be awarded to the horse or pony ridden by a NWAHJA member in good standing who accumulates the most points in the jumper divisions. This trophy is being o�ered by Laura McKenzie Duncan of Laurel Manor in remembrance of Kit Kalypso, a horse who was champion in victory and defeat.

Tator Tot AwardTo be awarded to the horse/pony rider combination who have accumulated the most points across the Beginner and Intermediate hunter and equitation divisions. This trophy is being o�ered by Diane Gooderl of Deer Creek Farm in remembrance of the very special school pony, Tator Tot.
