The SQQ of 149 with an overall market average 147 with a lot more lambs required. The trade was topped by a smart lamb from Andrew Wilson of Burrow Heights selling to £82. Plenty of pens of continental lambs weighing 41kg and 42kg selling between 155ppk and 160ppk. Hill bred lambs selling three to five pound more than lambs on the previous week with 44kg, mules from RH & C Ayrton of Ouzelthorn selling to £63 with mules averaging 136ppk. Horned lambs sold to £59 from BD Gill at 42kg.

A better show of Cast Ewes this morning, with 125 passing through the ring. Topping the day was T & CM Kelsall, Chipping with a pure Texel ewe realising

£95. Mules sold to £64 for a pen of 9 from WTC Farms, with others to £62 from the same home. Lean sheep looking dear in comparison to fat ewes with

buyers penalising of over-fat sorts. A large show of hill sheep saw big well fleshed swales sell to £46 from KM & KJ Curwen, Marshaw and £44 from the same

home, to average £40.54 for all forward. All sheep looking dearer on the week, to average £49.60 for all forward.

The calf trade was topped at £440 twice from JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall with good quality British Blue bulls with British blue heifers selling to £425 from the same home. All beef calves eagerly bid for with more required and could have easily been sold today. A brisk trade for the quality of Black and whites forward with better calves easily over £100 topping at £150. An overall average of £66 for all black and whites which was strong for the show of calves forward. Plenty of people in the market looking for stirks with once again a mixed show in terms of quality but all vendors leaving satisfied with their trade.

The only downfall with today’s Dairy trade was a lack of numbers forward with numerous byers around the ring looking to purchase cattle with more desper-ately required and could have easily been sold. Second calved non pedigree cows giving 35 litres from JH Woof & Son of Underhelm sold to £1750 with third calved cows giving 40 litres from the same home making £1500. An in calf cow due in November to the beef bull due for her fourth lactation sold to £1020 from D & A Travis of Manor Farm.

NWA had 42 Beef Breeding cattle forward. The top price of £1900 was achieved twice for black Lim x heifers (Irish Bred) with young Limx calves from W McCord, Perth whose entry of 13 heifers and calves averaged £1853.

North West Auctions held its monthly collective sale of farm machinery and equipment on Wednesday 28th October which saw 924 lots offered for sale. Modern equipment saw keen interest with several new buyers in attendance for the larger items attracted by the early entries which certainly benefited from being advertised for several week prior to the sale.

Modern equipment included a Claas 3100c Mower selling at £3900, Vicon round bale wrapper and a Hardi sprayer both selling for £3000 followed by a MAJOR 1600 tanker £2350 and a Marshall muck spreader £1550.

A selection of tractors and vehicles saw a 2WD MF350 sell at £3400 with a 2WD Ford 5000 sell for £2800 and a 2WD Ford 4000 achieve £1600. Farm vehicles sold to a top price of £1600 for a 55 Plate Mitsubishi L200 and a 53 Plate Isuzu Trooper £900. A Honda BIG RED quad bike achieved £700.

Seasonal livestock equipment is now selling well which included sheep hay racks at £150, feed troughs £30, hanging hay racks £70 and heavy duty gates £85.

Well finished lambs ranging 42-44kg were easiest sold to an active ringside of 12 buyers. Best lambs regularly achieving 155-165p/kg, topping at 178p/kg for Charollais cross from T L & S Cross. Mules averaged 138p/kg for all sold with the standards weights 140-148p/kg. Lightweight lambs achieved an overall average of 152p/kg, with more needed each week to meet buyers’ demands.

Top price of £77 was achieved for best Texels from D, J & A Freeman, with other heavy weight lambs regulary £70-£75. Hill lambs sold to £64 for Mules, £60.50 Cheviots, £58.50 Rough Fell and £53.50 Herdwicks.

Lightweight lambs sold to a top price of £59.50 for a pen of 35kg Texels, with other pens 30-33kg , achieving £45-£52. Please note: The sale commences at 1 pm with Light Lambs and these do benefit from being in the appropriate section.

The weekly sale of Cast Sheep had another entry of over 450 forward. A stronger trade this week with all types of ewes, four to five pound dearer on the week. Cast rams sold to £111 for a Leicester from PE & M Capstick of Whicham Hall, with Suffolks selling to £95 from GB JE DJ Platts of Greenbank Farm. Stronger continental ewes around the eighty pound mark, topping at £83 from AW & AM Clarke of Low Longmire. Stronger mule ewes sold in excess of £60, with best ewes topping at £66 and all mule ewes forward averaged £55.

Once again a large show of hill bred ewes forward, saw better swales easily selling in the forties and lean pens of ewes in excess of thirty pound. An overall average of £47.06 reflected a strong trade for the sheep forward.
