The province has approved Metro Vancouver’s new liquid waste plan but is giving no assurances it will meet the

region’s key demand to share in the expense of building advanced new sewage treatment plants.

The plan commits Metro to replace the Lions Gate and Iona sewage treatment plants – the two remaining ones discharging – by 2020 and 2030 respectively.

The two projects are expected to cost $1.4 bil-lion and threaten to dramatically increase sewer system fees for homeowners, particularly in Vancouver and the North Shore.

For the Lions Gate plant, North Shore resi-dents face the prospect of fees rising from $250 per year now to $1,400 unless the federal and provincial government step in to share a third of the costs each. Vancouverites could see their sewage costs soar to nearly $1,200 a year.

“We’re talking big bucks,” said Metro waste committee chair Greg Moore. “We have to get their support to build these things.”

Moore said he’s still optimistic Victoria and Ottawa will look favourably on Metro’s requests for support for the plant replacements.

For one thing, he said, Metro has pledged to accelerate the rebuild of Iona, completing it by 2020 if the senior governments pitch in.

“There’s no way we can afford that if it’s not cost-shared,” Moore said.

All other sewage treatment plants in the region are already using more advanced secondary treatment systems.

Iona and Lions Gate have been targeted in the past by environmental groups who have tried to launch private prosecutions against Metro, alleg-ing the effluent discharged to the ocean contra-venes the Fisheries Act.

The economy has gone a bit soft and could use a boost, says West Vancouver-Capilano MLA Ralph Sultan. A couple of shipbuild-

ing contracts worth a total of $35 billion would be a pretty good shot in the arm.

Sultan, along with other North Shore MLAs, spoke in the Legislature last week about the importance of securing one of the con-tracts available in the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy — a national shipbuilding strategy announced by Ottawa last year. The pro-gram, which has a deadline of July 7 for submis-sions, will see two shipyards chosen to build a number of combat, non-combat and small ves-sels, totaling more than 30 ships, over the next 30 years.

“Commodity markets are soft and America’s economy is not rebounding as we thought,” Sultan told The Outlook. “So here we are heavily dependent on commodities but not as robust as we’d like. The federal infrastructure program has ended for now and so has the provincial match-ing of that. That’s why this is important.”

Last week, four shipyards were in conten-tion for the contracts — Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards, including its North Shore and Victoria locations, Irving Shipbuilding in Halifax, N.S., Seaway Marine and Industrial in St. Catharine’s, Ont., and Davie Shipyard in Quebec – but many believe it’s become a three-horse race between the Irving, Davie and Vancouver yards. If the Vancouver yards are chosen, they would receive a $100-million facelift, upgrading all of their facilities.

In a report commissioned by Seaspan, quoted in the Legislature, 3,700 jobs will be created between 2013 and 2020 as a result of securing one of the contracts. Between 2023 and 2032, a total of 8,500 jobs, direct and indirect, will be generated at an average salary of $80,000 per year.

“This means a vibrant, growing shipbuilding industry on the West Coast potentially for the next 30 years,” says John Shaw, vice-president of program management at the Seaspan shipyards.

“And it means a strong growth in related jobs, either directly through construction or through repair work. It’s a huge boom.”

Malcolm McLaren, president of North Vancouver’s Allied Shipbuilders, is also look-ing forward to the potential influx of work. McLaren’s yard, while not involved in the fed-eral bidding process, stands to gain a signifi-cant amount of run-off work if the Vancouver Shipyards are selected.

“There are still smaller vessels to be built by other shipbuilders. A yard such as ours, we may be able to chase those other contracts if the big yards are busy,” says McLaren.

“Add that trickle-down effect to the normal baseline of work and it will be busy times for North Vancouver shipbuilding. It would be won-derful to have so much work in the area.”

The looming decision comes with significant political implications. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said he wants to choose shipyards based on merit and not aggressive lobbying. That, however, hasn’t stopped Premier Christy Clark and Deputy-Premier Kevin Falcon from planning trips to Ottawa to discuss the importance of the contracts for British Columbia.

“Irving has had a good run at the federal trough, but there’s no doubt Atlantic Canada needs a boost. It’s almost a matter of life and death there and they take it very seriously,” adds Sultan.

“And Quebec is Quebec. They want their due and they get their due. But this Seaspan outlet is dead serious, tough and determined. I don’t think anyone will be under any illusions that they aren’t competent. I’m sure the thoughtful people in Ottawa will know that.”

The North Shore Winter Club will be in the provincial spotlight next January after

being chosen to host the 2012 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

Last week, Curl BC announced the North Shore organization had won its bid to host the provincial women’s curling championship, which runs from Jan. 23 to 29.

Liz Goldenberg, the NSWC’s director of curling, said the club is brimming with excitement to host some of B.C.’s best female curlers.

“It’s going to be very fun,” Goldenberg told The Outlook.

“It creates a buzz within the curling community and draws attention to our club and the area.”

The tourney will bring B.C.’s top

10 women’s teams to North Van to battle for a berth in the nation-als. Curling icon and former world champion Kelly Scott will be among the contenders.

The B.C. championships will begin with a round robin, followed by a four-team playoff. The semi-finals and finals will be televised.

Last winter the club hosted the provincial junior championships, which drew up to 100 specta-tors per match. Goldenberg says the club is expecting even larger crowds at the women’s champion-ships, and has already begun look-ing for volunteers. For more infor-mation visit www.nswc.ca.

On June 11, North Vancouver resident Nick Marinos will behind the scenes as an inspector at Vancouver’s second UFC

fight. But the Squamish Nation member is used to

mingling with big boys. As a mixed martial arts fighter himself, “Tricky” Nick will be in the cage later this month. On Friday, June 24, Marinos will defend his All Martial Arts (AMA) welter-weight title for the third time. He’s up against Washington fighter Brett Lucero, who holds a welterweight belt in an American MMA league.

“I have seen a couple of his old videos and he looks like he’s got some stand-up,” Marinos says of the six-foot-tall fighter.

Marinos, who likes to take the fight to the

ground, says he’s been working on his wrestling skills. Marinos first claimed his belt with a sub-mission win.

“This will be one of my toughest fights yet,” he says.

North Vancouver fighter Houtan Alikashani is also on the card. The 155-pound MMA fighter trains out of North Van’s KB-ONE gym. Alikashani specializes in Muay Thai and kick-boxing. He’s up against Victoria’s Suraj Bangarh who is known for his karate and Muay Thai.

Annie Smits was at work when her doctor called with the results of Annie’s latest PAP test. Annie couldn’t understand what

the doctor was saying — it was too much medi-cal mumbo jumbo — so Annie asked for the test results in plain, simple terms.

And that’s what the doctor gave her. “You have cervical cancer,” the doc-tor said over the phone.

Annie was speechless and then she burst into tears. The word cancer was too closely associated with death and while she knows now that every-thing worked out, at that time the future seemed like one big unknown. It wasn’t so much that she was thinking of herself. Instead, it was her 10-year-old son Matthew who consumed her thoughts. She was raising him on her own and if she died, what would happen to him?

“At first I just cried for a couple of days and then I thought, ‘No, I’m beating this. I’m not ready to go. I have a few things to do.’

“There was no way I was going to leave this world too early. I just had this resolve that can-cer was not going to get me.”

She was lucky because her annual PAP smear – a simple test that’s part of a woman’s annual medical check-up – had caught the cancer in very early stages.

The cancerous cells were burned off over a series of treatments. Her doctor warned her that it would be as painful as labour but Annie

remembers little from her treatment sessions. “I’ve blotted it out,” she says, 18 years later.

“It’s just gone from my memory. There are just some things you want to forget.”

On June 11, Annie is joining her North Lonsdale United Church family at the North Shore’s Relay for Life at Mahon Park. It’s her

ninth year, just one less year than the walk itself.

“Relay for Life brings out so much awareness,” she says. Many participants have either had cancer or had cancer touch the lives of people they love. At dusk, the track is lined with lumi-naries — candles placed in fortified paper bags that have the names of people who

have either had cancer or who have died of can-cer written on them.

Annie is the top fundraiser for the Relay for Life. She’s getting closer to tripling her per-sonal goal of $2,000, thanks to the support from friends, family and her clients at The Travel Group where she’s a corporate agent specializ-ing in Tahiti. She sent an email out to everyone on her mailing list asking for donations. She tells people who she’s walking in honour of and in memory of; sadly, the list of friends who have died of cancer is much too long.

Gallery remixes summer fest Seymour Art Festival promises a myriad of music, art and special events

The Seymour Art Gallery will be a “flurry of activity”

for the next month after the unveiling of its new series of four exhibitions, “Remix, Recharge, Refresh and Reconnect” earlier this week.

On June 7, the gallery kicked off the month-long Seymour Art Festival with an opening reception and a chance to meet the artists featured in the first exhibition, Remix, which puts a twist on classic fairy tales through painting, collage and illustration.

Gallery coordinator Sarah Cavanaugh says the Deep Cove institution is taking a new approach to its annual festival, in large part because it adds elements such as live music and puppet shows.

“We’re trying to take the gallery in a new direction... we’re really embracing the word ‘festi-val,’” says Cavanaugh.

“We want to take the gallery out on the street, so we can entice new people who have been to the gallery before.”

From now until July 3, the Seymour Art Festival will showcase the work of 30 visual art-ists in four different shows. There will also be special events and performances every Tuesday evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and every Sunday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Some of the musical acts scheduled to perform include the Double Helix Jazz Trio, Peter and Tony Chotem, Dave Taylor and Tyson Naylor, and the Company B Jazz Band.

From June 14 to 19, the exhibition “Recharge” will showcase the collaborative and individual works of the “Arts Off Main” arts col-

lective, including painting, photography, mixed media,

polymer clay and pottery. From June 21 to 26, artists of varying back-

grounds and ethnicities will draw from their individual histories and present “refreshed” inter-pretations of history, current events, and trends in the exhibition in mediums such as painting, printmaking, pottery and video.

In the final exhibition, a group of seven artists will draw inspiration from the word “reconnect” and “explore the process of making art under new terms, while revisiting relationships and fos-tering new connections.” That show runs from June 28 to July 3.

A New York Ranger and his secret love of the men in blue

Randy Heath’s favourite spot to watch the Canucks’ games is at home.

The 47-year-old doesn’t mind a crowd; it’s just difficult for him to listen to other fans’ comments.

Even though Heath wore a New York Rangers jersey in the early ’80s, he says he can’t imag-ine what it takes to play at the current NHL Stanley Cup level. This comes from a man who’s stared down Wayne Gretzky.

“The speed is obviously ridicu-lous now and the players are in such good shape,” he says.

Heath grew up playing hockey on the North Shore. He secretly hoped he would wear the orange V on the ice, but he was snatchedup by the Rangers. It didn’t stop him from being a fan. Even when Heath’s old team faced the Canucks in the 1994 finals, Heath says he didn’t have trouble choosing who to cheer for.

“I have always had a soft spot for the Canucks,” he says.

Today, Heath is the West Vancouver fire department’s assistant chief. Yet his skates haven’t lost their shine. Heath laces up for Vancouver Canucks’ alumni games.

“Even if you aren’t a ‘true alumni,’ but you grew up in Vancouver and played in the NHL, they welcome you.”

Deep in the heart of enemy territory

When Matt Vondette was a kid, he got so excited about the Canucks’ Stanley Cup run that he stood on a Hwy. 1 overpass

and encouraged the passing motorists to honk their horns in support of the team.

He’s been cheering for the Canucks ever since. And this year he’s convinced he’s cheering for the Stanley Cup winners.

In this season’s quest, he’s shown his loyalty by going to games as far away as California. “It’s fun watching the game at home but it’s more fun watching it with 20,000 other people,” he says.

He simply had to watch the finals live but tickets in Vancouver are rarer than ice floes on

the Burrard Inlet. And so he flew east to Boston for games two and three.

You might be able to spot him in the crowd. This year he’s wearing a Henrik Sedin jersey. He used to wear a Trevor Linden jersey but that garment is now more for show after Linden signed it. (You wouldn’t want to get it dirty and put it in the wash-ing machine, would you?)

Vondette owns Evergreen Computers. Even when the cat’s away, he wants the mice to play. The busi-ness closes at 4:30 p.m. so staff can watch the early games and “the staff uniform on game day is game jerseys, which we bought for all our staff.”

Give the Canucks a hand

Linda Findlay is not wearing her love for the Canucks on her sleeve. She’s chosen her hands instead.

The North Shore RBC mortgage specialist got the idea when grocery shopping. The cashier had nail art on her thumb and Findlay thought why not on all 10 fingers? She gathered five differ-ent designs — old and new Canucks logos and the Stanley Cup, of course — and brought them to nail artist Mina Fuamizu at Style Company Salon and Spa on Lonsdale.

It took two one-hour sittings but Fuamizu hand-painted the crests on Findlay’s nails.

“She really, truly is amazing,” Findlay says of Fuamizu’s handiwork.

Canucks mania reaches new heights

As the Vancouver Canucks quest for hockey’s top prize, support for them is

popping up high above the city’s tallest skyscrapers.

To back the team, Grouse Mountain announced last week that the resort will wave Canucks flags for the duration of the Stanley Cup playoffs on its iconic red Skyride.

“Everyday our flags will take more than 60 trips to the Peak of Vancouver to heights of 3,700 feet to help show Boston what our city is really made of,” said Sarah Lusk, Grouse Mountain’s public relations manager. “Not only do we have the best city in the world but also the best hock-ey team.”

Representatives from the mountain resort are urging resi-dents to join them in Canucks mania.

If the Canucks win the Cup, resort officials have pledged to fly the flags until the victory parade later this summer.

Women don’t have to sacrifice style for Canucks pride

North Shore clothing designer Wendy Van Riesen loves seeing women decked out in blue and green Vancouver Canucks garb.

But even during the height of the playoffs, sup-porting one’s team shouldn’t come at the cost of a fashion faux pas, she says.

“You see women all the time in oversized hockey jerseys, but there’s an absence of femi-ninity there,” says the enthusiastic artist, sipping from a coffee at Lonsdale Quay. “I guess I’m hoping to change that. I want there to be more of a feminine presence in hockey.”

At the end of May, Van Riesen, owner of Dahlia Drive, began designing a few Vancouver Canucks dresses on a whim.

Using her signature style, Van Riesen took used slips and pressed hand-painted designs onto the recycled material. “By virtue of the fact that they are recycled, every dress is unique, and each one is treated a little differently,” she says. “Each dress is dealt with almost like a sculpture.”

The result is an artistic, eye-catching barrage of blues and greens that combines puck pride with sensible style.

The fabric is both colourful and nearly translu-cent, “almost like stained glass,” she says.

Response to the dresses, says Van Riesen, has been overwhelming. Within days of mak-ing the prototype her designs were swept up in the media frenzy. Last week her work made it to the front page of one of Vancouver’s commuter newspapers. It’s been featured on television spots and discussed on talk radio networks.

Van Riesen, whose sons are both loyal Canucks fans, says she’ll be happy if her creative contributions plays even the smallest part in the team’s historic playoff run.

From the banner that suddenly appeared on the pedestrian walkway over the upper levels highway to the flag flying at West Vancouver’s municipal hall, West Vancouver has turned blue and green.

“We are all captivated,” Coun. Trish Panz says of Canucks fever, not-ing the games’ scores even have a way of getting passed around at council meetings.

West Vancouver Community Centre has been busy with fans on game days. Resident pop in and out to watch the action on the big screen, district spokesperson Jessica Delaney says.

“The remaining games will be broadcast from the atrium and all are wel-come,” she adds.

Hollyburn Country Club is also offering families a fun and interactive game night experience. Yesterday the centre split its large gymnasium into two — one half hosting the game and the other full of shooting contests and games for kids. The facility is considering hosting a tailgate party if the Canucks go to game six.

West Vancouver Police want to remind fans to have fun but be respon-sible. “Plan ahead and arrange for transportation and/or accommodation if you plan to attend any of the venue sites,” the department wrote in a press release.

A chance to be a lifesaver


Haleh Bahrami still remembers the first time she saw the before and after photo-graphs.

In the first picture, a healthy and happy woman in her mid-20s sits upright in a chair smiling. Her cheeks are rosy and her long ear-rings dangle down toward her floral print dress.

In the second, the same woman lays on a hos-pital bed in a powder blue gown. Her face is grey and gaunt, her eyes are sunken, her lips sagging into a frown. A series of intravenous tubes criss-crosses her chest, while oxygen tubes plug her nose.

“It breaks your heart to see it,” says Bahrami. “Right away it hits you. When you look at the photos you think, she has so much life ahead of her. You just want to do all you can to help.”

The woman in the photos is 27-year-old Mona Zarei, a young Iranian who had been working toward a PhD in electrical engineering in Florida when she was diagnosed with a rare blood dis-order.

In the past three years the devastating disease — known as PNH — has forced Zarei to be hos-pitalized repeatedly. Despite her best efforts to fight the incurable disorder, it gradually led to

bone marrow failure. A medical team has concluded that Zarei’s

last hope is a bone marrow transplant, but after searching several bone marrow banks, doctors have been unable to find a successful match.

Because there is a higher chance of find-ing a match among people of the same ethnic-ity, Bahrami — a West Vancouver resident who works as a production manager with Canadian Blood Services — has organized a stem cell drive this Saturday, June 11, aimed at the North Shore’s large Iranian population.

Currently, only 635 Canadians of West Asian descent are registered in the national stem cell network — representing just 0.2 per cent of regis-tered donors.

“Obviously that’s very low and not representa-tive of the larger population,” Bahrami says. “We need to get the word out. Raising the awareness in the community is just as important as getting the right donor.”

Bahrami says similar events in the past have been successful in raising awareness among other ethnicities, such as Canada’s Chinese and East Indian communities.

And, so far, it looks as though the donor drive in West Vancouver could have quite the impact. On Facebook, roughly 1,200 people have regis-tered for the event, which takes place June 11 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. outside the London Drugs at Park Royal Shopping Centre.

“Hopefully people come out and learn more about being a stem cell donor,” says Bahrami. “It’s so important for people who are in need... this is their last chance at life. Doctors have exhausted every other option.”

Haleh Bahrami (above) has organized a stem cell drive at Park Royal this weekend. Bahrami was moved to action after hearing the story of Mona Zarei, shown at top right before and after being diagnosed with a rare blood disorder. Doctors say Zarei’s only chance of survival is to find a matching bone marrow donor of Persian descent.

A few quick facts about Canada’s

stem cell registry:

• Fewer than 30 per cent of patients will find a compatible donor from a family member — 70 per cent rely on the gen-erosity of a stranger.

• There are cur-rently 800 Canadians waiting for a bone marrow or stem cell match that could save their lives.

• Although Canada is one of the most ethnically-diverse nations in the world, more than 80 per cent of our national stem cell registry is Caucasian donors. In the past year, OneMatch has worked hard to change that, recruit-ing more than 3,600 new registrants from non-Caucasian back-grounds.

After 100 years of being prepared for what-ever comes its way, the North Shore’s scouting movement has a lot to celebrate,

says area commissioner Eleanor Oakley.In the past century, scores of North and West

Vancouver youths have passed through the ranks of Beavers, Cubs, Venturers and Rovers.

And likely all of them, says Oakley, have picked up skills that will help throughout the rest of their lives.

“It’s is a wonderful program,” she says. “It gives kids a lot of personal reward, and it gives them a chance to learn important values.”

Oakley first got involved 22 years ago, when one of her sons started in Beaver Scouts. From the very start, she says, she knew the program was a cause she could get behind.

“As a leader, it’s amazing to see their personal growth, to see them develop a confident nature, a sense of camaraderie, and leadership skills,” she says. “When you see that progression, you know you’ve made a difference.”

Oakley says some of her proudest moments are watching former Scouts go on to graduate from high school and post-secondary institutions and begin their careers. Many of them, she adds, eventually give back to the program that played such an influential role in their adolescence.

This Saturday, June 11, Scouts Canada is hosting a full day of celebrations at North Vancouver’s Cates Park to mark the 100-year milestone on the North Shore.

The party will give past and former Scouts alike a chance to spend time together and share thoughts about the program. To date, nearly 600 people have registered. The event is open to the public.

The day-long event promises to have a carni-val-like atmosphere, with 18 stations of fun to choose from — including pulling chuck wagons,

launching bottle rockets, relay races, knot chal-lenges, and an obstacle course.

There will be a memorabilia area where former members can share memories from years gone by, and a badge trading area, where people can view badges from all over the world. A group of Saudi Scouts will also be present to share stories about their dress, dance and customs.

The event kicks off with a ceremony at 10 a.m. At 3 p.m., the party will wind down with campfire songs, skits and cheers. At 3:30 p.m., Chief Commissioner of Scouting Steve Kent from Ottawa and North Vancouver District Mayor Richard Walton will cut the anniversary cake.

Looking forward, Oakley says the Scouting program is evolving with the inclusion of newer technologies and tools, such as GPS units and social networking sites. Much of those changes, she says, will be youth-driven.

“They’ll keep us up to date on technology that’s around,” she says. “We want to make the kids more of a part of the decision-making pro-cess.”

Keeping relevant, she adds, is important in today’s age. For the past 15 years, Scouting has seen a drop in enrollment, but it’s now starting to rebound as kids rediscover their love of the outdoors.

“In some ways I think Scouting is more impor-tant now than ever before,” Oakley says. “The more kids insulate themselves with technology, the more they become loners. They need face-to-face interaction, they need personal develop-ment. It’s great to see kids get involved and get excited.”

Trying to convince a reporter that there is only one true moment, the present, is a tough sell. We are trained not to trust, to question what we’re told

and to think two, three or four steps down the road at all times.

But, says newly-minted North Vancouver author Canela Michelle Meyers, there is only one place to be — now.

“If you let it all go, what are you without that drive or that stress?” she asks.

“It feels like nothing because it doesn’t have anything for your mind to chew on. It’s daring, to allow things to come to you.”

It hasn’t always been so simple for Meyers. Married, middle class and raising two young children in New Westminster years ago, things in her life were rather ordi-nary. But, Meyers says, she felt overwhelmed, as if she

was “being devoured inside.”She needed to get away and follow whatever was eat-

ing at her, but, she asked herself, how can leaving my kids and my life behind be the right thing to do?

“I had no spiritual education yet in those days. I was feeling the sorrow, angst – all of it,” she says.

“But the beauty was my travels were temporary; I was only separated from them for three months. I re-met my kids in Massachusetts [where they were living with their father] and after a year-and-a-half we came back.”

A teacher of the traditional Japanese Buddhist healing practice reiki and Indian satsang meditation, Meyers has come a long way since her days without any “spiritual education.” And, now that prominent spiritual bent has led her to authorship.

Meyers’ first book, “Right Here, Right Now Meditations,” launched today at a secret celebration in West Vancouver and online June 1, is series of invitations to readers to “become more awake to themselves and live

more comfortably.”For instance, one of the excerpts, titled “Motivation

for Change,” is a simple invitation to readers to harness their energy and frustrations about why they haven’t got-ten something they’d hoped for, and take a more positive stance on whatever their desired target may be.

As we end the coldest spring in 55 years and emerge into some bright light and warmer temperatures I can’t help but notice all the work being done. The fl owers are planted and the lawns are being mowed. There is so much activity – and that is just at home. Today I literally washed away winter. It took a good scrub brush and a little elbow grease but the green deposit left on my deck from a wet winter is GONE! It felt fabulously productive and I loved being able to see my progress and to have that sense of instant gratifi cation.Seeing results and measuring progress in other areas of life and business isn’t always so easy. It would be nice if you could just look back and realize that a missed spot is easy to go back and correct. It would amazing to be able to stand up at the end of every task or even at the end of every day and feel a real sense of accomplishment – a job well done! That is just the kind of thing that is encouraged at SWAN and while networking in business does not always provide instant feedback it is a worthy exercise.

Our SWAN year is wrapping up so don’t miss our June meeting to see what is in store for the fall and don’t think you have to wait to join! The benefi ts of membership are immediate.
