Ladies and gentlemen, exhibitors and visitors,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to what is already the 16th year

of our international trade fair and conference for additive technologies,

Rapid.Tech + FabCon 3.D.

Additive manufacturing continues to move forward, and Erfurt is the

perfect place to present the cutting edge of this future technology. Af-

ter celebrating a successful 15th anniversary of the event, Rapid.Tech +

FabCon 3.D is now relaunching with a further-developed concept based

on the unique trio of conference, trade fair and networking.

We feel it is important to offer you, our conference visitors, a balanced

portfolio of contributions, so that you can obtain an overview of the state

of the art in the industry while also exchanging ideas on an expert level.

This year, we are especially looking forward to our renowned keynote

speakers – Dr Dr Majeed Rana (Düsseldorf University Hospital), Mr Ulli

Klenk (Siemens AG) and Dr Steffen Beyer (Ariane Group GmbH) – who

will shed light on potential and actual applications for additive manu-

facturing in medicine, industry and aerospace.

We have added three new topics to our conference programme, bringing

the total to 14 specialism- and sector-specific forums. The new topics

are Plastics, Software & Processes, and Standardization & EHS. On all

three days of the specialist conference and 3D Printing Conference, the

latest theoretical and practical developments, trends and findings from

theory and practice regarding additive technologies and applications

will be discussed in more than 100 presentations aimed at users from

sectors including the automotive industry, aviation, electronic engi-

neering and medical, dental and orthopaedic technology.

We are also delighted to offer you another innovation this year: our event

app. It promises to offer a unique trade-fair experience for trade visitors

and exhibitors alike. Whether you’re looking for exhibitor information,

customized conference schedules, live voting, chat functions or access to

documents – you can access the entire world of Rapid.Tech + FabCon 3.D

in one compact app. We hope this will also provide you with even more

opportunities for exchanging ideas and networking. And, of course, the

Einsatz der computer-assistierten Chirurgie zur mikrovaskulären Rekonstruktion des Gesichtsschädels

Dr Dr Majeed Rana, Chief Physician and Vice Director of the Department of Cranio- and Maxillofacial Surgery at Düsseldorf University Hospital will discuss the use of computer-assisted surgery in the microvascular reconstruction of facial bones. Additive processes play a vital role in this field as 3D-printed models can be used in procedures such as the complete replacement of bones with microvascular de-fects. Accident-related injuries or illnesses affecting the face can be treated with far better results for the patient than traditional methods would achieve. As a specialist in reconstructive facial surgery, Dr Dr Rana has some ten years’ expe-rience in the use of additive processes. His knowledge forms a central part of the expertise within the Düsseldorf department, which has established itself as one of the leading institutions in this field worldwide due to its proficiency and range of equipment for 3D printing and computer-assisted surgery.

At Siemens Power and Gas we are utilizing the benefits of Additive Manufacturing to increase our customers satisfaction, enhance our products and optimize our processes along the entire value chain from R&D to services. Thereby we are using AM for our entire portfolio, from the compressor through the combustion to the turbine applications of our entire fleet. Based on these high-end applications and the connected requirements, we are driving the transfer of established industrial standards and certificates also to the AM technologies. Hence, we expect open and transparent AM systems, allowing us to access and influence all available data at all times online in realtime; just as in other established industries e.g. Pharma, F&B and semiconductor. These open systems shall be connected into production lines, with vertically and horizontally totally integrated automation solutions and also seamlessly integrated into one end-to-end PLM ecosystem. A holistically digital-ized ecosystem, with one integrated CAx Plattform beyond the classical CAD-CAE-CAM mindset and with one data format. In AM all three disciplines consistently affect one another and hence must be considered and represented simultaneously to enable disruptive, generative, and more efficient topologies. Innovative Topolo-gies increasing the overall efficiency of our turbines and therefore also enabling us to contribute to society, by fostering the global reduction of CO2 emission.

Durchbruch bei der Industrialisierung der additiven Fertigung für zukünftige Raketentriebwerksanwendungen und -geräte – Game Changer in Design, Fertigung und Funktionalität

Qualification of components via Laser Beam Melting (LBM) in aerospace is subject to a series of procedures, quality gates and tests. Specifications, norms and stand-ards are indispensable and form the basis for the qualification. An overview of the most important standards and specifications will be given in the talk.For more than 15 years, the Ariane Group, in collaboration with corporate partners, has been developing and testing external companies and institutes for additive manufactured components for applications e. g. in the field of turbopumps, com-bustion chambers and structural components such as e. g. actuator bracket.

As part of the Ariane programme, many components manufactured using Laser Beam Melting (LBM) will be developed in the launcher sector and will be flight-qualified with the planned maiden flight of the Ariane 6 in 2020 and industrialized in the years to come.

In addition to laser melting, other processes such as Wire & Arc Additive Manu-facturing (WAAM), Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) and so-called Cold Gas Spraying (CGS) for large structures in development and qualification. Copper, steel and nickel- based materials (e. g. Inconel 718, Inconel 625, Hastelloy X) are the once materials chosen for the various applications.

The presentation gives an overview of the challenges and hurdles in the introduc-tion and qualification of materials and processes and the use of additive-fabricated components for space propulsion.
