Nutrition Working Group• EMERGENCY FOOD RELIEF, POOR

NUTRITION PRACTICE, FOOD PRODUCTION AND HEALING PLANTS– Created a referral data base at Life

Line/Rape Crisis consisting of the location of all philanthropic organisations and soup kitchens;

– Developed isiZulu Nutrition Guidelines; – Secured funding for the “African Roots”

Urban Agricultural Project : coordination of food gardens in the city and the promotion of indigenous crops;

– Secured rootstock of bulbine and sour fig ex Botanic Gardens for distribution to HIV+ people.

CITY WIDE HOME BASED CARE NETWORK

• LACK OF COORDINATION OF HBC VOLUNTEERS– Assist Life Line/Rape Crisis in

maintaining the HBC data base; – Convene monthly meetings of all

service providers in the City; – Provide the secretariat for the HBC

Network and implement decisions;– Facilitate support/supervision of

HBC volunteers by municipal clinics.

CHILDREN’S ACCESS TO MEDICAL SUPPLIES

• FORMED THE THAPELO MEDICINES ACCESS WORKING GROUP (NAMED IN MEMORY OF AN HIV+ CHILD WHO DIED IN 1999 – THAPELO MEANS PRAYER IN SOTHO.)

– Receive and distribute supplies (disinfectants, gloves, vitamin syrups etc) worth R10 000 per month, from City Health to HBC volunteers working with CINDI Members;

– Raise funds for Thapelo Backpacks for HBC volunteers working with CINDI Members;

– Employ a stock controller/counsellor – seconded by Regional KZN Dept of Health to Msunduzi Hospice Assoc);

– Operate a VCT site at one of the Thapelo Depots.

CHILDREN HELPING CHILDREN “A CHALLENGE TO ADULTS”

• CHILD PARTICIPATION AND OUTREACH BY PRIMARY SCHOOLS – Learners promote AIDS Awareness

through regular events and concerts;

– Every term, they provide practical help through collections for the Thapelo Project;

– Learners break down prejudice by hosting parties for HIV+ children.

ADMINISTRATIVE JUSTICE FOR CHILDREN AFFECTED BY HIV/AIDS

• FORMED THE CHILD INTERVENTION PANEL (CHIP)– The Panel consists of specialist

service providers (eg LHR, NICRO, SAPS, Child Welfare etc) who demand action within specific deadlines to ensure that defaulting bureaucracies deliver timeous services to children;

– If necessary, CHIP enlists the help of lawyers and the media.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT WORKING GROUP

• THE NEED TO HIGHLIGHT LOCAL GOVT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO CHILDREN AFFECTED BY HIV/AIDS

– Assisted with the development of the Msunduzi Muncipality’s IDP;

– CINDI participates actively on the City AIDS Task Team;

– CINDI facilitates communication between the City and NGOs that provide service to children;

– CINDI acts as a catalyst to bring Local and Provincial Government together with other role players eg Fast Tracking Emergency Cases and Street Children.

HOUSING ACCESS WORKING GROUP

• CHILDREN’S RIGHT TO SHELTER– Lobby Local and Provincial

Government to ensure orphan-friendly policies;

– Convened Housing Summit attended by Local and Provincial Government;

– Promote community care vs institutional care;

– Access Provincial Housing subsidies

FUNDING PANEL• SOURCING COLLABORATIVE FUNDING

– Piloted collaborative funding of+ R4m from Development Cooperation Ireland 2003;

– Established a neutral Funding Panel to adjudicate Member’s proposals;

– Currently developing M&E Tools for the Network;– Currently developing Guidelines and Policies for

Joint Funding Initiatives; – Currently establishing Strategic Funding

Objectives for each Cluster (Schools and Youth, Psychosocial Support, Health Care and HBC, Children in Care and Community Development);

– Currently capturing Best Practice -for inclusion on the CINDI Website.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES• The scale of the epidemic and its

devastating impact on children necessitates cooperation “We complete one another – we do not compete with one another”;

• Acknowledgement of the need to employ staff to run the Network;

• Democratic decision making through consensus by Members of the Network;

• Complete transparency and accountability by FINCO and the staff;

• Respect for each Member - regardless of their size who pool their skills and experience in a spirit of generosity;

ACHIEVEMENTS (since 1996)

• Hosted the international conference “Raising the Orphan Generation” June 1998;

• Membership has increased from 25 to 80+ Members;

• Developed a website and weekly eNewsletter;

• Receive and distribute donations from the public (clothes, toys, school supplies etc).
