World diabetes day 2012
Type 2 diabetes is a common and serious global health
problem, which, for most countries, has developed
together with rapid cultural and social changes, ageing
populations, increasing urbanisation, dietary changes,
reduced physical activity, and other unhealthy
behaviours.
There is conclusive evidence that type 2 diabetes can be
prevented through nutrition counselling, increasing
physical activity and modest weight reduction.

Lifestyle prevention

Carbohydrates & glycaemia
A number of factors influence glycaemic responses to food :
 Amount of carbs
Type of sugar (glucose, fructose, sucrose lactose)
 Cooking & food processing
12
Types of carbohydrates and energy
Complex fermentable carbohydrates are sometimes described as potentially good sources of long-lasting energybecause of a low GR, and because of providing "prolonged energy release".
A high and fast energy supply is often needed at the beginning of physical effort or for a short task.
A prolonged supply of energy over time is required, for example, during prolonged, endurance tasks, providing energy for brain (concentration, learning) and muscular effort:
- in the upper intestinal tract under a glucose form
- in the lower tract under SCFAs form
Interest of NUTRIOSE® for prolonged energy release : a tool for reformulation

14
NUTRIOSE®
Provide some rapidly available energy for brain and
effort in the upper intestinal tract under a glucose form
(NUTRIOSE® 06 has a not nil energetical value ), while
inducing low glycaemic (GR = 25) and insulinaemic
responses (IR = 13)
Provide late energy converted from SCFAs, during further
digestion in the lower intestinal tract, to ketone bodies or
glucose, or directly used by muscles, due to bacterial
fermentations (prebiotic effect)
Maintain well-being during digestion (high digestive
tolerance threshold)

NUTRIOSE® : focus on delayed energy
release – the large intestine stage
According to the definition of Woods and Gorbach (2001),
NUTRIOSE® 06 acts as a prebiotic fiber from 8 g/day:
beneficial bacteria (glucidolytic flora ) and/or in harmful bacteria
(proteolytic flora)
 intestinal pH
bacterial enzymes concentrations : fecal α- and β-glucosidases

Butyrate in particular, and other SCFAs, may promote satiety
Butyrate increases expression of gene encoding for PYY and GLP1
The pattern of fermentation (mostly the ratio acetate : propionate),
may impact the potential lipid lowering properties of non digestible
carbohydrates: colonic propionate is a gluconeogenic substrate in
humans and inhibits the use of acetate for cholesterol synthesis.

Age makes a difference
Younger
people
Younger
people
They find it harder to manage food habits,
especially female students and young people starting their career, who tend to
snack.
They realise how important
healthy food is when they have children.
They exercise more often to
manage their weight better.
Their nutritional knowledge is under average.
Not very interested in managing daily
caloric intake
25
Age makes a difference
Older
people
Older
people
They are more concerned about food because they have more knowledge on the subject thank to their
experience.
Their lifestyle is more tranquil, they are more
serene
They are generally more concerned with their
weight / figure.
They are more concerned with food quality.
More concerned about finding
healthy food
