NUTRIENTS THAT:
What's
“ESSENTIAL”?
– Can’t be made in body | Necessary for health | Outside source
– Too little → body breakdown . Deficiency symptoms that get worse with time; too little too long kills
– Return of enough to deficient diet reverses all deficiency symptoms
– Life knows how to make a body that works
– We have to ensure optimum intake of building blocks
– Building blocks come from sunlight, air, water, and food
• Needed for proper cell membrane function (membrane fluidity)
• Needed for proper function of brain and nervous system
• Supports healthy skin – smoother, less irritation
• Metabolized into anti-inflammatory prostaglandins
• Maintains health of arteries and lowers triglycerides – healthy blood pressure
• Thought to play a role in fat metabolism: turning on fat burning genes
• Associated with reduced chance of insulin resistance
• Associated with lower risk of cardiovascular diseases
• Substrate for making DHA and EPA
• Needed for proper cell membrane function (membrane fluidity)
• Needed for proper function of brain and nervous system
• Supports healthy skin
• Metabolized into both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory prostaglandins as needed
• Associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease
• Substrate for making GLA, an important anti-inflammatory fatty acid, and AA, an important structural fatty acid
ESSENTIAL FOOD OIL FOUNDATION:
DERIVATIVE OIL SUPPLEMENT:
– Oils/fats are major nutrients (like protein and carbs)
– Fix damaged food oil foundation by ‘oil change for the body’
– Supplements are add-ons, not substitute for food oils
– Fish, Krill, Mussel, Algae
Intake 100 grams
Foundational Oils
Udo’s Oil insures that the majority of fat in your diet comes from quality sources (13.5 g per tbsp)
Daily Dietary Fat
• Make up about 97% of dietary fat.
• Taken in grams, not milligrams
• Udo’s Oil is foundational – not supplemental
• Make up about 3% of dietary fat.
• Taken in milligrams, not grams
• Fish & algae oils are supplemental – not foundational
We consume an average of 75-100 grams of fat per day
• 3000 mg of supplemental from quality sources
• 97 grams of foundational from various sources
Supplemental Oils
• ESSENTIAL FOOD OIL FOUNDATION:
– 2-4 tbsp./day, mixed in foods; intake spread over day
• = 27-54 grams (1-2 oz.); up to 1 tbsp./50 lb. of body weight/day
• DERIVATIVE OIL SUPPLEMENT:
– 1-3 g capsules/day; not more than 5.1 g/day
• ALL-SOME-NONE STATEMENT:
– ALL of us need a food oil foundation made with health in mind
– SOME of us benefit from adding supplements
– NONE of us can be healthy on supplements alone
DAMAGED FOOD OIL FOUNDATION
– Bottled, plant-based cooking and salad oils
– Colourless, odourless, tasteless, damaged
– 1 tbsp., 1% damaged = 1.5 M damaged molecules for every one of 60 T body cells
ESSENTIAL FOOD OIL FOUNDATION:
– Made with health in mind
NEED TO FIX FOUNDATION even if ZERO conversion
Fish oils are NOT competition for an Udo’s Oil Foundation
• A combination of plant based, organic oils that contain omega-3, -6, & -9 in a 2:1:1 ratio
• Flaxseed oil*, sunflower seed oil*, sesame seed oil*, coconut oil*, evening primrose seed oil*, rice bran oil*, soy lecithin*, oat bran oil*, mixed tocopherols**.

Foundational Essential Fatty Acids
Supplemental Derivatives
A prostaglandin is any member of a group of lipid compounds derived enzymatically from fatty acids that have important functions in the animal body They are mediators and have a variety of strong physiological effects. Although they are technically hormones, they are rarely classified as such.
Arachidonic Acid
• Rabbits, Horses, and Elephants eat only plant foods (mostly grass), and convert grass omega-3 (ALA) into DHA for brain, retina (vision), and sperm
• Gorillas eat only leaves and greens, and
convert plant ALA into DHA for brain,
vision, and sperm
• 300 Million Hindu Brahmins:
Obligate vegetarians for 5,000+ years;
never eat fish or take fish oils; just as smart,
see as well, and reproduce as effectively as
fish eaters and supplement oil users
Body converts foundation oil into supplement
O-3 ALA → EPA (5-10%, body of both genders)
O-3 ALA → DHA (2-5% female, 1% in male body)
O-6 conversion is not a concern; enough intake in most people
Research shows people are able to convert ALA to DHA at a rate of 2-5% and 5-10% for EPA. This means that 1 tbsp of Udo’s Oil, which has 6500mg of O-3, will give between 130 and 325mg DHA and 325-650mg of EPA.
Factors that promote a healthy conversion:
• Getting enough ALA starting material
• Sufficient levels of vitamin B3, B6, Mg, Zn, vitamin C
• Improving the ratio of omega -3 to omega -6 in the body
• Phytosterols, phytoestrogens, GLA, and protein in diet
• Being female or vegetarian also upregulates conversion
Factors that decrease conversion:
• CLA, trans fats, excess carbohydrates and saturated fats in the diet
• High omega -6 levels
• Low levels of the vitamins and minerals mentioned above
• Being male
• Genetic factors
• Aging
• Smoking, alcohol, high sodium, and certain medications like corticosteroids
No, we do not.
• The American Heart Association recommends 5 - 10% of daily calories from Omega 6
• On average North Americans only consume 13g of omega-6 per day –
most of these are highly refined and heated/damaged oils.
• High quality supplemental and foundational oils are important for good health
Did you know?
• Omega 6 is just as essential as Omega 3
• LA is the most abundant essential fatty acid in the human body
• The body tightly regulates conversion of LA to AA
• Our brains need 4 times more AA than DHA per day to function properly
• Omega 6 produces both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory molecules as
needed. No link with inflammatory diseases has been found associated with
dietary omega-6.
1 Tbsp of Udo’s Oil contains 3g of Omega 6
ESSENTIAL FOOD OIL FOUNDATION:
– Organic
– Protected from light, oxygen, heat
– No harsh chemicals
DERIVATIVE OIL SUPPLEMENT:
– More processing needed
– EPA, DHA are 5 times more sensitive than plant O-3
– Damaged by processing (like food oils, but more sensitive)
– Can get KRILL and ALGAE DHA oil made without damage
• FROZEN: 3 years; solid → NO molecules move, meet, react
• COLD, CLOSED: 12 months in fridge
• COLD, OPEN: Use within 8 weeks
• ROOM TEMP, OPEN: Can taste rancidity in a week
• CAPSULES: 1 year without refrigeration
• GLASS: Has class; 2,500 years of safe use; no leaching
• METAL: Catalyzes damage to oils; shellacked
• WOOD: Oil seeps in and goes rancid, polymerizes
• CARDBOARD: Covered with paraffin, petrochemicals
• PLASTIC: Oils swell plastics, and plastic leaches into oils quicker than into water
HOT/WARM: After foods come off the heat; best added just before eating; hot soups, pasta sauce, cooked veggies, grains, potatoes
COLD: Shakes, smoothies, salads, yogurt, dressings
COMPATIBLE: With all foods: meals, snacks, desserts
FOR FRYING: Use WATER; for light frying, oils with high smoke points (not Udo’s Oil)
Pregnancy Key nutrients for developing brain and eyes
Breastfeeding More energy, better infant nutrition
Children Born more alert, more active, explore more
Mothers More energy, less depression, less fatigue
Grandmothers More energy, nicer skin, lighter moods
Guys, too Skin, energy, mood, cognitive, sperm
