Nowadays, the significant increase in the prevalence of obe-sity worldwide is directly associated with an increased riskof developing noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemias, inflammatory disease, cancer, and even neurodegenerative diseases. In this regard, obesity and chronic diseases are not only limited to develop-ing countries, nor to the adult population. On the contrary, the greatest increase in the incidence of obesity in the last20 years has been observed in developing countries andyoung population.
Important risk factors involved in obesity developmentcomprehend (i) high-energy intake; (ii) excessive fat con-sumption (especially saturated fat and transfatty acids);(iii) excessive intake of simple carbohydrates (sucrose, glu-cose, and fructose); (iv) insufficient intake of vegetables andfruits (sources of natural antioxidant), legumes (dietaryfiber), and fish and seafood (sources of polyunsaturated fattyacid); and (v) unhealthy lifestyle (sedentarism among otherfactors like consumption of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs). These factors directly favor oxidative stress, which is a rele-vant metabolic disturbance related to the development ofother pathologies.
In this sense, diet chemical composition and foodpreparation play a relevant and direct role in regulatingseveral of the metabolic and molecular pathways involvedin the prevention and treatment of obesity and its relatedcomorbidities. For this reason, it is necessary to identifyand understand molecular pathways involved in these eventsin order to develop nutritional strategies that contribute to
the prevention and treatment of oxidative stress linked withthe obesity.
In this special issue, the impact of specific diet and nutri-tional interventions destined to prevent or attenuate obesity-related oxidative stress injuries is presented. By reading thedifferent articles, readers will be able to identify relevantaspects underlying molecular changes generated by oxidativestress as a consequence of obesity in different study models. The risk of developing metabolic syndrome and cardiovascu-lar alterations in humans, as well as dietary interventionsusing foods or bioactive compounds (polyphenols or othermicronutrients) to treat these alterations, is addressed in thisissue. It should be noted that some of the studies publishedhere suggest the protective effect of bioactive compoundsand exercise on oxidative stress and other alterations gener-ated by obesity. Thus, in this special issue, results aboutreproduction, oxidative stress, aging, obesity, and relatednoncommunicable diseases and their interaction with nutri-ents and diet are reported.
