Nutrilite is a brand of mineral, vitamin, and dietary supplements created in 1934 by Dr. Carl F. Rehnborg. Nutrilite products are currently manufactured by Access Business Group, a subsidiary of Alticor whose products are sold via the Amway and Amway Global Corporations worldwide. The Nutrilite brand is known as Nutriway in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Turkey, Australia and New Zealand.

Amway is a direct selling company and manufacturer that use network marketing to sell a variety of products, primarily in the health, beauty, and home care markets. Amway was founded in 1959by Jay Van Andel and Richard DeVos. Amway conducts business through a number of affiliated companies in more than hundred countries and territories around the world.

Distribution and marketing

Nutrilite's vitamin and mineral products are distributed exclusively by Amway Global affiliates known as Amway Business Owner (ABO) in India, Independent Business Owners (IBO) in North America and Amway IBOs in more than 90 other countries and territories. Amway, Quixtar, and Access Business Group, are subsidiaries of Alticor. Nutrilite claims to be the only global vitamin and mineral brand to grow, harvest and process plants on their own certified organic farms, although Nutrilite states that their products may sometimes have ingredients from plants grown not at their own farms. However, these farms are held to the same quality standards as Nutrilite's own farms. Nutrilite farming techniques include soil solarization, an integrated pest management system and utilize sustainable agricultural production systems. Nutrilite's organic farms are located in Brazil, Mexico and The United States (California & Washington State).Many Nutrilite products sold in other countries are also manufactured locally, for example in India.

History

One Man, Carl F. Rehnborg

Prior to 1934, there were no known multivitamin/multimineral supplements. People found it difficult to know if they were getting enough nutrients in their daily diets.

Then, Carl Rehnborg, founder of the NUTRILITE brand, created his first nutrition product and became a pioneer in the history of nutrition.


His Dream

While living in China in the early 1920s, Carl Rehnborg noticed, amid unforgettable malnutrition and disease, an important connection between the foods people ate and their overall health.

In farming communities, where fresh fruits and vegetables were plentiful, people were much healthier overall.

In the cities, where diets included far more sugar, salt, and fat, Carl noted that there were many more instances of critical diseases, such as scurvy and beriberi.

During political unrest in Shanghai, Carl was isolated in a protected enclave. There, he conceived the idea of using nutritional elements missing from the typical diet as a way to improve overall health.

Carl supplemented his meager diet with soups from what was available: local herbs, grasses, and vegetables, along with rusty nails (for iron), and lime stone and ground-up animal bones (for calcium).

He shared his broth with a few friends, although the flavor was far from palatable.

Months later, Carl and his friends who ate the nutrient-rich broth emerged from their enclave much healthier than those who had eaten only army rations.

Returning to the United States, Carl set up a small laboratory on California's Balboa Island, where, over the next six years, he conducted experiments using different plant varieties.

He developed a way to dry these plants while still preserving their important nutrients.

He created a formulation of alfalfa, watercress, and parsley, which became the basis of his first product.


Ultimately, Carl Rehnborg created the first multivitamin/multimineral supplement sold in North America.

Our Legacy

Since 1934, when the first NUTRILITE product was introduced, the company has become a leader in nutrition research, development, and innovation.

Today, under the leadership of Carl's son, Dr. Sam Rehnborg, the next generation of scientists, researchers, and technicians is preserving the rich Nutrilite heritage by continuing to produce high quality, innovative supplements.

Because they are made from whole plant concentrates, many NUTRILITE supplements contain a wide array of phytonutrients.

Throughout his life, Carl Rehnborg believed this was the optimum way to achieve good nutrition the way nature intended.

Manufacturing operations in Buena Park, California, and Guangzhou, China, produce up to 10 billion NUTRILITE tablets, capsules and softgel capsules annually.

A New Opportunity

Carl began selling his new supplement person to person, friend to friend, through word-of-mouth referrals.

When some of these early customers began referring new customers to Carl, he suggested they sell the product themselves, rewarding them with discounts on their purchases.

Just as Carl had created the first multivitamin/multimineral supplement sold in North America, he also pioneered an early multi-level marketing system and a revolutionary new business model still in use today.


The two people who guided the NUTRILITE brand to its present-day business success story were Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel. Rich and Jay had been distributing NUTRILITE products for 10 years before they founded Amway in 1959, so they were dedicated to the quality of the products and committed to the integrity of the brand.

Today, the NUTRILITE brand is sold exclusively by Amway Independent Business Owners worldwide.

Manufacturing

At the NUTRILITE™ manufacturing facility, our standards of quality in manufacturing are as much a part of our company culture as our natural farming practices. Clean rooms and well-cared-for equipment are one measure of excellence; another is the level of expertise demonstrated by Nutrilite staff throughout the manufacturing process.

Plants are harvested at their nutritional peak and transported as quickly as possible to our dehydration facility.

The concentration process uses specialized equipment in a state-of-the-art facility to dehydrate, mill, and extract nature's richest nutrients from the plants – creating the world's finest nutritional concentrates.

Each batch of concentrate powder is tested to ensure it is free of contaminants and of proper potency.

Computer-controlled scales measure the exact weight and amount of each concentrate powder.

The various powders are then blended into a single, uniform mixture. The powder blend is compressed into tablets, coated with a special

solution for easier swallowing, and inspected closely for cracks or chips. Finished tablets are sealed in specially-designed containers to maintain

freshness.

How Nutrients Work

Nutrients from food are absorbed by the body as it passes through the digestive system:

What Micronutrients Do?

Product formulation

How a Nutrilite Product Is Formulated

The process of formulating a NUTRILITE product usually follows this sequence:

1. The ingredients are evaluated for their physical properties – particle size and uniformity, density, and flow.

2. Trial combinations of ingredients are tested with excipients (inert substances) to evaluate how the blend flows.

3. The ingredients are compressed, producing prototype tablets.

4. Prototype tablets are evaluated for physical characteristics – hardness, dimensions, coating, propensity for discoloration, and stability of active markers.

5. Initial formulations are fine-tuned, and steps 1 – 4 are repeated. 6. The final formula is determined. 7. The finished tablets are created and evaluated for physical properties,

stability, and active markers. 8. Manufacturing instructions are developed through scale-up trials, from

gram quantities to hundreds-of-kilograms quantities. 9. A production-plant trial of the formula is run to produce finished tablets.

Nutrilite Products - the Result of Extensive Analysis and Research

Every NUTRILITE™ product is the direct result of extensive field testing and laboratory analysis, conducted by scientists, microbiologists, chemists, pharmacists, nutritionists, and other technicians. We have made a significant investment in scientific expertise and equipment, not often found in the nutritional supplement industry.

Our comprehensive analytical services include:

1. Bioassays – to identify beneficial ingredients and compounds for our products.

2. Microbiology – to set specifications and test ingredients to ensure product safety.

3. Analytical chemistry – to identify sources of ingredients, and develop processes for creating safe, consistent, and effective products.

Nutrilite analytical chemists rely on highly sophisticated equipment and methods to support their work:

Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry is used to screen raw materials and test finished products – especially to identify volatile components in


essential oils, or to test for those preservatives and other ingredients not allowed in some countries.

High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separates the active compounds in a concentrate or finished product from other components. This lets the scientist identify them individually and accurately determine their levels. HPLC supports label claims and shelf life determination.

Nutrilite Bioassays: Identifying Beneficial Ingredients

In the bioassay laboratory, our scientists use cutting-edge research and equipment to help product developers identify the most effective ingredients for NUTRILITE products.

Every day, we run assays – or tests – to predict the effect of a particular ingredient on the human body. In 2005 alone, over 2000 assays were done, ranging from the effects of a particular antioxidant to synergistic studies involving specific combinations of potential ingredients for our products.

Bioassays measure the initial effects of an ingredient at the cellular, sub-cellular, and genetic level, using living cells. Later, clinical tests on human subjects will further our knowledge of an ingredient's effect.

Many of these tests involve the use of a sophisticated, robotic system allowing a scientist to program a test, set it up, and move on to other tasks, while the system performs the test and delivers the finished data directly to the scientist's desktop computer.

Nutrilite Microbiology: Ensuring Product Safety

Microbiology is the science and study of microorganisms, including algae, fungi, bacteria, and viruses.

Our microbiologists work every day to set specifications and test ingredients before the actual formulation of NUTRILITE products.

In addition, they determine safe levels of fungi such as bacteria, yeast, and mold – natural microorganisms inherent in the many farmed ingredients used in NUTRILITE products.

After the products are formulated, Nutrilite Quality Assurance ensures that these specifications are met in the finished product.


Nutrilite Analytical Chemistry:

Analyzing Raw Materials and Finished Products

The job of analytical chemistry is to characterize and subsequently analyze the raw materials that go into NUTRILITE products.

When the right form and strength of the raw material is determined, methods for using those compounds are formally validated.

The analyzed raw materials are used in finished products. Methods are then developed and validated to ensure that the active

levels specifications and claims for the finished products are met. These methods are then used to verify the shelf life of the product,

ensure packaging integrity, and guarantee consistent performance of the finished NUTRILITE product.

Nutrilite Health Institute Clinical Investigations and Trials

Nutrilite Health Institute clinical investigations and trials are focused on intervention studies to evaluate the effects of plant concentrates, botanicals, and nutrient products on markers of human health. The Nutrilite Health Institute also continues Nutrilite founder Carl Rehnborg's commitment to scientifically-based products through clinical research programs.

A clinical study involves the evaluation of the functions of plant concentrates, and product prototypes in volunteers in a carefully controlled clinical setting and under the supervision of medical health care professionals.

Why do we do clinical research?

Research - to advance science and knowledge regarding the benefits of dietary supplements and plant-based ingredients, and their mechanisms of action. We want to know not just if a product works, but also how it works.

Reputation - specifically, to maintain Nutrilite's strong reputation for selling science-based supplements. As needed we conduct clinical research to evaluate the performance of Nutrilite ingredients and/or formulas. When we make claims about our products, we have confidence and stand behind them. We do not make claims we cannot substantiate.

Integrity - to protect the integrity and trust of the Nutrilite brand.

To date, we have completed:

50 clinical studies on Nutrilite concentrates, products, and prototypes - some of this research is never seen by the public because if a prototype does not work, it does not become a Nutrilite product.

6 large scale nutrition assessment studies.

These numbers represent research conducted for over 50 years at 28 external research sites in 5 different countries as well as our own research facilities in Buena Park, CA (USA) and Ada, MI (USA).
