An Inter-city Bilingual Declamation contest was held at the Army Medical College (AMC), Ayub Auditorium on 9th February. The event was organised by the AMC Debatingand Literary Society (ADLS) and was themed ‘Sapientia et Eloquentia’ (Wisdom and Eloquence). The event was held tohonour the memory of AMC’s first principal, the late Lt. Gen. M. Ayub Khan, affectionately referred to as ‘Baba’ by the AMCOLIANS. The chief guest was the former principal AMC, Major General (retd) Masood Anwar. Teams from Rawalpindi Medical College, Islamic International Medical

College, etc participated in the event. Opening the house for AMC Jawaad Qureshi spoke with conviction on the topic ‘One death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic,’ while Farah Bano had everyone in stitches on the topic ‘Dil tau bacha hai, ji.’ Junaid Arif of MCS bagged second position. In the Urdu category, Waqas Ahmed of MCS grabbed the first position and won accolades from the audience for his wonderful Urdu humorous speech. The proud winner of the beautiful crystal trophy was MCS.

Students compete for the honour at LUMS Olympiad 2011Held from 23rd March till 25th March 2011, this year NUST for the first time participated as one central team. Out of the total 20 separate events at the Olympiad, team NUST competed in four of them. Out of these four, they were able to grasp Victory in two and got honorary mention in one. NUST Students exhibited their talent by Winning the Speed Filming and Movie Trivia competitions. Movie Trivia comprised of a questioning contest about the Movies and its History, both of present and from the past. Whereas, Speed Filming comprised of making a short Video 5-7 minutes long as per the directives and parametric demands of the organisers. Our Team of Five in this category worked tirelessly to come-up with a video that stole the show from the lights of GIKI, FAST, NAC, KU

etc. The EME delegation consisted of 28 students in teams of 8 were honored with the winning trophy.

Media Fest at GIKI

A 22 member NUST Team participated in “MediaFest

‘11” – an annual media and short film oriented all

Pakistan student competition at GIKI University. The

NUST team was organised under the banner of NUST

Media Club. Our teams participated in a number of

events, from On-Spot Commercial Making to On-

Spot Photography. The competitions were held in

very healthy and friendly but equally competitive

atmosphere. Teams from NCA, LUMS, PU-CAD, FAST

etc. competed for the honours. Our Team from IESE-

SCEE brought the honours home by grasping a very

hard-fought 2nd place finish in Punjabi Tottay category.

Rock climbing competitionNUST Adventure Club (NAC) participated in All Pakistan Open Rock Climbing Competition for Boys from 5th March till 8th March 2011. The event was organised by Adventure Club Pakistan in association with the DanishEmbassy. NAC Team of 9 climbers competed for pride at the Saidpur Village Rock Climbing Pitches. 6 members of the team managed to set their personal best times and hence qualified for the final round. NUST Climbers glorified the day by securing All Top Five positions in the competition.

Chenab Rock Climbing CompetitionNUST Adventure Club (NAC) took its female climbers to Chenab Rock Climbing Competition for Girls, held at Chenab Rocks near Chenab Nagar on February 18th-19th, 2011. NAC Team comprised 6 climbers and 2 officials. The competition was held in very competitive atmosphere with climbers from several other national adventure clubs participating in the event. Hafsah Waheed of NCVI (now ASAB) managed to secure 2nd place in the finals.

MCS Participation in FJWU Women’s WeekFatima Jinnah Women University organised a Women’s Week from 8th to 10th Mar 2011. The Women’s Week included exciting events like debating, painting, photography and software programming. Nine students from MCS participated in the event and bagged prizes. Hamda Ajmal and Samia Ahmed bagged first and second prizes in the software programming category and Manahil Zahid stood second in the photography competition.

SCEE arranged Inter School Basketball (Men) Championship from March 07th to 14th. After the pool matches, NBS, SMME, SCEE and SCME qualified for the semi-finals which were played on Mar 1st. NBS and SMME beat their respective rivals to qualify for the final.The final, played on March 14th, proved to be an exciting contest but in the end NBS came out as the winners. The chief guest Professor Riaz Ahmad, acting Principal SMME, awarded the winners trophy to the NBS team. Intra-NUST table tennis championship A thrilling match of Inter

School Table Tennis (Men) Championship was held from February 26th to 28th at SMME. Teams from SEECS, SCEE, NBS, SMME, SCME, SADA, NCVI (now ASAB) and CAMP participated in the competition. NBS and SEECS played the final on Feb 28. After an interesting match NBS won the competition. Final matches (Women) Championship was played between NCVI (now ASAB) & SMME. After an interesting match NCVI (now ASAB) won the competition. Prizes were awarded to the champion team by the chief Guest Dr. Abdul Ghafoor, Principal SMME.

Intra-NUST Basketball Competition

Inter-varsity declamationMilitary College of Signals won an Inter-university Declamation Competition held at PIEAS, Islamabad on March 20. Participants from 22 universities and institutes took part in the competition including those from Fast, College of EME, SEECS, Fatima Jinnah Women University, Hamdard University, Foundation University, Bahria University etc. An MCS team performed exceptionally well and was awarded the Declamation Competition Trophy.

Inter-hostel Cricket CompetitionThe Sports Branch arranged an Inter Hostel (Boys) Cricket Competition from 5th to 6th March at SCEE Cricket Ground, H-12 Campus. Teams from Ghazali-I & II, Hostel Staff, Razi Hostel-I, Rumi Hostels (I,II & III), Isra Apartments participated in the competition. Ghazali-II and Hostel Staff played the final on March 6th and after an interesting contest Ghazali-II came out victorious.

SEECS Sports Gala

A three-day “Sports Gala 2011”, was organised at

Jinnah Stadium Islamabad. Not only undergraduate

and postgraduate students showed their talent

by participating in the gala, but staff and faculty

members also contributed in making this event

successful. Ehmad Zubair performed live with his

electric guitar singing “Doob raha”. The spectators

and the supporters of their respective houses

chanted lively slogans, clapped and made a lot of

noise to support their teams. The participants of

games like tennis, table tennis, cricket, football etc,

did their best to entertain the spectators and to lead

their respective houses toward success. Arsalan

Tufail was nominated the player of the Gala.

During the closing ceremony, medals and trophies

were distributed among the athletes. The winners

going around the gymnasium holding up the

trophies, waving their house flags and an impressive

show of fireworks made the day very special.

Intervarsity Hockey Zonal ChampionshipIntervarsity Hockey Zonal Championship for ‘Zone C’ was organised by Bahria University, Islamabad from March 31st to April 2nd under the auspices of Higher Education Commission. The participating universities included NUST, NUML, COMSATS, UET, Bahria Univeristy and Quaid-i-Azam University, Bahria being the winners of the tournament. NUST, though remained runners up and qualified for the finals for the third time.

Science Olympiad ‘SYTEC’ A four-day Science Olympiad-SYTEK was held at NUST from May 6 to 9. The event was organised by NUST Science Society (NSS). Science Olympiad was an opportunity for NUST students to learn about science using hands-on skills and knowledge. The event also helped inculcate scientific spirit among students. The events included Sciattack (a catapult making competition), Bridge Your Innovation (a bridge-making competition), SyTrek (a scientific scavenger hunt), Life Detector (a bio-sciences scavenger hunt), Bon Voyage ( a boat making competition), Project Exodus (a presentation on future space settlement options), In the Sky (a plane making competition) and Project Exhibition and Science Quiz. The prize-distribution ceremony was held at the university campus on May 9, 2011. Rector NUST Muhammad Asghar praised the efforts of NUST Science Society and distributed prizes among the winners. He hoped that such events would be organised regularly to stimulate students’ interest in the field of science.

Trekking tripNUST Adventure Club (NAC) went for trekking on Trail-3 in the Margalla Hills Islamabad on Sunday 17th April 2011. A total of 31 NUST Students participate in the excursion which also involved collection of garbage along the track. Heavy rain from the start through to the middle of the track made the trip even more exciting. The rain slowed down the trekkers but they did reach the Monal Top after two hours of strenuous exercise. They started their descent back to the starting point through a different route finishing at the Islamabad Zoo.

Paragliding training courseAdventure Club Pakistan conducted a paragliding course for NUST Adventure Club in the last week of April 2011. NUST sent 8 of its climbers for the two-day training course. After a day of ground training and lectures on techniques of paragliding, the students were given hands-on paragliding practice on the second day.

MCE declamation contestA declamation contest was held at Military College of Engineering on May 10 in English and Urdu.The contestants from MCE gave a good perfomance and outshone the competitors. MCC-44 was the winning team. Other than this, Mamoon Shafae got the best English speaker prize and Haseeb Zahid was the runners-up. Shazim won the best Urdu speaker prize and Zark remained the runner-up. In the end, Principal MCE distributed prizes among the winners.

Remote control flying trainingNUST Aeromodeling Club organized a remote control flying training course from May 10 to 26. Twelve students with no prior experience of flying a remote-controlled plane were selected from different schools of NUST. The students received flight simulation training at IGIS in a virtual environment during the first week. The second week, the students were taken to the open grounds and were given the freedom to put what they had learnt from the simulation training to the test. The students were taught to fly both electric- and enginedriven planes. They were also taught how to start a plane, check for malfunctions and carry out basic troubleshooting.

PROCOM NET CompetitionPROCOM NET Competition was organized by National University of Computer and Engineering Sciences, Karachi Campus and was held on April 30 and May 1. Teams from 12 academic institutions took part in the competition of which 8 were from PNEC. PNEC teams secured 2nd positions in Quiz Competition, I-quest, Innovative Business Idea, Programming and E-zenith while they stood 3rd in Circuit Design Competition.

PNEC wins declamation contestsAll Pakistan Urdu Debate Competition was organized by Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) on April 3. Almost 20 universities from all over Pakistan participated in the contest. Adnan Zahid and Ali Akram representing PNEC team won the overall 1st position in the competition. Two weeks later, on April 19, Adnan Zahid and Hassan Afzal represented PNEC in the All Pakistan Bilingual Declamation Contest at FAST. The team secured 1st position in Urdu and English categories and also won the team trophy.

NUST Marathon An overwhelming number of students and faculty members participated in an intra-NUST marathon organised at the university campus on April 6. More than four hundred male and female students along with faculty members enthusiastically took part in the activity. The athletes covered a track of 3.86 kilometers in approximately thirty minutes. Rector NUST Engr Muhammad Asghar was the chief guest at the occasion. FM 91 was the official media partner and Nestle Pakistan sponsored the event and provided refreshments to the athletes. The marathon ended with a prize distribution ceremony and the top five athletes from each of the three categories (male, female and faculty) were awarded shields. Arts, Sports and Adventure Society (ASAS) in collaboration with NUST Adventure Club organized the event.

‘MYRIAD’- Inter-university competition Military College of Signals arranged a two-day inter-university event, Myriad MCS on 14th and 15th May 2011. The activity was organized by IEEE Student Branch in collaboration with MCS Telecom Society and MCS Software Society. The event was the first of its kind and comprised multiple competitions. More than 700 students from 21 universities of twin cities and nearby cities participated in the event despite extreme weather conditions.The event was inaugurated by Brig Dr Ashraf Masood, Dean Engineering Wing MCS with a ribbon cutting ceremony. This was followed by themed wall graffiti competition, sports, declamation contest in Urdu and English language and Junk Yard competition that prepared the participants to build a project using concepts of physics. Female participants were particularly zealous in the flower arrangement competition and the results were a beautiful sight for onlookers. For the gaming enthusiasts, an e gaming tournament was organized including 4 games MOHA, FIFA, Counter Strike and DOTA. One of the most vibrant and energetic competitions of the event was scavenger hunt in which 15 teams competed to search for the Golden Star in two rounds. Prize distribution ceremony marked the end of the two day event. Shields and Certificates were awarded to the winners by chief guest Major General Shahid Maqbool, HI(M), Commandant MCS. Myriad winner trophy was shared by Institute of Space technology (IST) and Foundation University Medical College (FUMC) on securing equal points.

Inter-school badminton championshipNUST inter–school women’s badminton championship was held on April 22 at Zainab Hostel, H-12 Campus. Among the participating schools were SEECS, SCEE and SADA. Hostel teams also took part in the championship. After staying unassailable in the pool matches, SADA and SEECS qualified for the final that was played the same day. After an exciting match, SEECS team outshone the other team to clinch the championship. Meanwhile, in men’s inter–school badminton championship held from April 22 to 24 at Ghazali Hostel (H-12 Campus), teams from various schools, including SEECS, SCEE, SMME, SCME, SADA and CAMP, participated enthusiastically. The winners of the pool matches played semifinals on April 23. SCME and SCEE came out triumphant to qualify for the final. The finalists took on each other on April 24, 2011. The thriller kept on swaying to the favour of both teams but SCME finally overpowered the rivals to stand first in the competition.

Independence Day Climbing FestivalNUST Adventure Club (NAC) members participated in Independence Day Climbing Festival for Girls held on August 13 at F-9 Park, Islamabad. Two NAC Members were among the winners with Rabia Sakhi and Esha Iqbal both from NUST Business School grabbing 2nd and 3rd positions in the Girls Senior category.

IIT Bombay Techfest Qualifiers The Department of Mechatronics Team participated in the Qualifiers for IIT Bombay Techfest 2012. The Pakistan Qualifiers for the event took place at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). A knockout theme for the qualifiers was selected in which two robots had to race against each other towards a single finish point. The Robot Ullysess from EME won the competition by completing the task in 6.3 seconds defeating CASE by 0.5 seconds in the final round, thus achieving the honor of bearing the country’s color for representation in the international competition. All of the College of E & ME’s teams were ranked in the top 10 teams of the qualifiers. The winners, team ‘Ullysess’, in the semis were one on one against another team ‘Al-Beruni’ from College of EME and managed to beat it. The College of E & ME team heralded three cheers for themselves as well as for CASE at the end of the event cultivating a friendlier and healthier atmosphere among the two institutions.

Bilingual Elocution ContestNUST Literary Circle organised the first Bilingual Elocution Contest at School of Chemicals and Materials Engineering (SCME), NUST on Oct 22. Students from different colleges at NUST participated. Mr. Tauqeer Nasir , Director General of Pakistan National Council for Arts was the chief guest on the occasion. Students from different schools participated in the English round, “The King’s Speech”. Jawad Qureshi(AMC), Ammar Gillani(AMC), and Ahmed Salman(SMME) clinched the top three positions respectively and the consolation prize went to Anum Shafique from SCME. Whereas, Afaq Ali (AMC), Huma Tauqir (NCVI) and Abubakar Daud (C of E&ME) came out winners in the Urdu round “Andaz-e-Bayan”. The nustians simply mesmerized the crowd by their majestic performance. The chief guest awarded prizes and shields to the winners of the competition.

Allama Iqbal Shield Debating Contest NUST Drama and Debating Society (NDDS) at NBS organized the first Allama Iqbal Shield Intra NUST Bilingual Debate Contest on Nov 27. The fiery declamation was presided over by Dr Ashfaque Hassan Khan (Dean and DG, NBS) Mr Shakeel Ahmed (Head SDPI, Climate Change Pakistan) and Ms Izzat Jahan (Motivational Speaker and Corporate Consultant, NBS). Shafa’at Gilani and Zainab Ahmed chaired the contest. The winners for the English section were Sameeh Sajjad (NBS), Sadaf (AMC) and Ahmed Gondal (EME) in first, second and third positions respectively. As for the Urdu speakers, Ehtesham Tanvir (NBS), Abu Bakr Daud (EME) and Haider Sultan (MCE) bagged the first, second and third prizes respectively.

Entertainment for a cause: A double delightOn the 13th of October 2011, StageAblaze Productions held the first ever play performed at NBS in a noble attempt to generate funds for the flood affectees of 2011. StageAblaze Productions is an initiative of a few ambitious students of NUST Business School to promote theatre culture at NBS. An overwhelming response was witnessed at StageAblaze Productions’ most recent effort of ‘Fawlty Towers - Reopened’. Fawlty Towers is basically an old comic British sitcom and this particular play was one episode of it. This effort managed to raise Rs. 19,260 for the flood victims of the devastating floods of 2011 and donated the amount to the NUST Community Services Club (NCSC) as part of the club’s flood relief efforts.

All Pakistan 15th Bilingual Declamation Competition The contest was held at Army Burn Hall College for Boys‚ Abbotabad from Oct 11-13. As many as 30 prestigious educational institutions including Pakistan Military Academy, Pakistan Naval Academy, Pakistan Air Force Academy, Cadet Colleges participated. After a close contest in the final rounds of the Urdu debates, Hamza Ishtiaq from MCS was declared the Best Urdu Speaker of the declamation contest and stood first in Urdu serious category and overall Military College of Signals team from NUST stood 3rd in the competition. Commandant Pakistan Military Academy Kakul‚ Maj. Gen. Mazhar Jamil distributed prizes and medals to the winners and runners-up.

Climbing Contest Rabia Parveen Sakhi a student from NBS won Silver medal in 1st National Climbing Competition held on Dec 10. She also was a runners-up in IMD All Pakistan Open Climbing Competition, 2011 held on Dec 11. Previously Ms. Rabia Sakhi was successful in securing a runners-up trophy in Independence Day climbing competition on August 14 along with a number of other wall climbing competitions. She did so well in both the speed and difficulty portions of almost all the events,that the audience kept their fingers crossed as positions were secured by fractions of seconds only. Also Mr. Zaki Uddin Kazmi; student of Civil Engineering, NICE-SCEE and the head of NUST Adventure Club’s Adventure Body was supported to represent Pakistan on International Level in China for Adventure Olympics.

Scavenger Hunt: Flood relief campaign by NACThe NUST Adventure Club headed by its ex-president Anam Rathor arranged a Scavenger Hunt with the aim to gather flood relief fund. The event took place on Oct 19 in which as many as 30 teams from various colleges at NUST participated. The teams came up with most interesting names like Numerical Analysis, Lycan, Mengineers, The Shokha Tareen Group, Atomic 5 and Wehshi Nustians. The teams were assigned a clue set and were asked to report back to IESE as soon as they are done with all of their clues. Smurfs, a team from SEECS managed to find all their clues well in time and were declared the winners of the event. Apart from all the fun and entertainment, NAC raised funds and handed them to NUST Community Services Club.

Nustians shine in PAF Declamation ContestAs many as 44 teams from all over Pakistan participated in the declamation contest held at Pakistan Air Force Academy from 22-25 Nov. PAF Academy Risalpur is known for organizing the biggest “All Pakistan Declamation Competition” on annual basis. For this competition, 4 best teams and 2 individual speakers were chosen for the finals. NUST team stood first among the participating teams in the initial round and qualified for the final round. Students from SEECS, Hashim Mufti clinched the first prize in English serious category and Usman Abdullah secured second position in Urdu humorous category. Whereas, COMSATS secured the second position. MCS- NUST team comprising Hamza Ishtiaq and Asad Mehmood clinched the third position respectively. Paragliding Training CourseNUST Adventure Club in collaboration with Shaheen Air Adventure Pakistan on December 16-18, gave NUSTIANS a chance to soar through the winds and touch the sky at a 3-day training course of Paragliding – Glide through the Air.The event was planned to provide all the participants with the basic training on how to steer the parachutes. On the first day of the training, the participants were addressed by the CEO of Shaheen Air Adventure Pakistan on how to use the equipment and how to prepare for the flight. Afterwards a ground training of one day the participants were taken to Mang near Khanpur Dam where all of them had the first real time flights of their life; from a cliff; around 100 ft. high.

Creativity sought through short story writing contestNust literary Circle from SCME conducted online Short Story Writing (English) competition in the months of July and August. The competition was open to all schools of NUST, the ones on H-12 campus as well as the military colleges. NLC conducted an ‘Intra NUST Short Story Writing Competition’. Participants were asked to write submit stories not exceeding 3000 words on three topics: ‘Epiphanies in the Shower’, ‘I now knew it was time to let go…’ and ‘He hesitated at the mailbox, not knowing if he should really send the letter’. Cash prizes were announced for the three best stories. The first position was secured by ‘Taibah Jaffery’ a student of SCME, the second prize went to Amna Jehan Aqdas from NBS and the third prize went to Beenish Azhar of NCVI (now ASAB).

Gun shooting competitionNUST Adventure Club organized first ever Shooting Competition at NUST on Nov 20 at the Gun and Country Club, Sports Complex Islamabad in collaboration with the management of the Club. Almost 30 participants from different colleges including College of E&ME and MCE, Risalpur participated. The participants were given a tour of Gun and Country Club in which they were given a chance to view the Gun Club heritage which included different rifles from 18th and 19th century and different open air and indoor shooting ranges including 10 meter indoor range, 25 meter range, 50 meter range and the Skeet shooting range. Zainab Abbas and Rabia Mazhar from MCS , Esha bint e islam and Rabia Sakhi from NBS were the winners and were awarded shields and certificates at the end of the event.

Intervarsity Football CompetitionMilitary College of Signals won Inter-university Football Competition on Dec 29. Mohammad Ali Jinnah University. (M.A.J.U) organized the first Jinnah Cup in which a total of 14 teams from various universities in the twin cities participated. MCS outplayed IST (Institute Of Space Technology) in the quarterfinal round while defeating M.A.J.U in the semi-final. The toughest of all matches for MCS was the final in which it took on Preston University. The final was a nail biting competition but MCS managed to outclass the rival team. Dr. Abdul Qadir, Dean of Computer Science Department at M.A.J.U, was the chief guest at the finals. MCS was awarded the winner’s trophy.

Intra-NUST Basketball ChampionshipMCS team participated in the intra-NUST Basketball Championship held on Nov 26. The team rose to the occasion to seal the coveted winners’ trophy. The event was held at EME College. The final match was played between MCS and NUST H-12 campus teams on Nov 26 2011. The MCS team played remarkably and haunted their opponents in the final both with their tactics and stamina. MCS team remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. The MCS team comprised Officers, GCs and NCs.

Intra-NUST Women Basketball Championship Intra-NUST Basketball Competition (Women) was held in College of E&ME Rawalpindi on Nov 30, 2011. Three teams from NUST Headquarter, College of Electrical & Mechanical Engineering, and Military College of Signals (MCS) participated in the event. Final match was played between NUST HQ & E&ME in which the former defeated the latter.

Intervarsity Hockey ChampionshipIntervarsity Hockey (Zone ‘C’) competition was held on Oct 24 2011. Bahria University hosted the said competition. The hockey team of Military College of Engineering (MCE), Risalpur represented NUST in these competitions. Final match of the said competition was played between Bahria University and National University of Sciences & Technology. NUST came out runners-up in the final.

Intervarsity Men Basketball Championship

Intervarsity Basketball (Men) Zonal Championship Zone ‘C’ 2011-12 was held in NUST, H-12 Basketball Court from 21-23 Dec, 2011. NUST hosted the said championship. Pakistan Sports Federation sponsored the event. Final match of the championship was played between Bahria University and NUST (MCS). Bahria beat NUST in final and NUST came out runners- up in the tournament.

Intra-NUST Athletics CompetitionIntra-NUST Athletics Competition was organized by MCS on Dec 28. It was held at MCS Cadets Hostel under the arrangements of MCS Training Battalion. Chief Instructor (E) Brig Muhammad Inayat Ullah Khan graced the event as Chief Guest. Students from MCS, College of EME and SEECS NUST H-12 Campus participated in the competition. In field events, SEECS secured 1st Position in Shot Put. Long Jump was won by MCS after a tough competition with E&ME College. MCS athletics team performed exceptionally well and stood first in 100,200 and 800 meters race.

Floral Art ManagementFloral art is an innovative aesthetic skill that celebrates the power of the flower. The workshop on floral art arrangement was held in SEECS–NUST to invoke love for this beautiful art among students. Floral Art Society, Pakistan was invited to conduct the workshop held from Jan 30 to Feb 3. The event intended to teach precious lessons of life which can neither be taught nor found in books. The participants learnt the art of creating flower arrangements in vases, bowls, baskets and making bouquets. Farhana Azim was invited as a facilitator of the workshop. The students and faculty members were taught how to use various materials of different textures along with different shaped vases together to form one composition. The workshop proved to be very useful as it helped students learn different color compositions and how to create themes of their own.

Clean-up hike NUST Environment Club, Institute of Earth Sciences and Engineering (IESE) organised a clean-up hike at the hiking trails of the Margalla hills in Islamabad on March 4. It was done in synchronization with the mountain trekking event organised by the NUST Adventure Club (NAC) so as to gather the maximum number of participants.Members of the club, faculty members, including Dr. Muhammad Nasrullah Khan (Principal SCEE), and students of the university participated in this activity that involved collecting waste materials, like wrappers and PET bottles which had been carelessly dropped in the bushes along trails 3 and 5 by hikers, and disposing them off properly in bins. The clean-up hike continued all the way up to Pir Sohawa. At Pir Sohawa, the General Secretary of NEC, Syeda Asma, talked to the manager of a local restaurant to get a drift of the situation of solid waste management at the famous hotel.

Ink painting workshopAn ink painting workshop was organized at School of Art, Design and Architecture on March 17. Students from all NUST institutes participated in the workshop which required them to bring along only a pack of cotton buds and fountain pen inks, which were to be used as tools for replicating different paintings on plain paper.The three-hour workshop started with a demonstration on pointillism technique by the president of Fine Arts Club, Rehab Ahmad, accompanied by other members of club from SADA. After the demonstration, each student was provided with different paintings and was asked to replicate them using the pointillism technique. Members from other schools of NUST also got intrigued by the newly experienced art technique. NUST Fine Arts Club organised the workshop to encourage students unleash their creative side.

‘Mind Your Language’: An innovative display of theatrical skills‘Stage Ablaze’ at NBS introduced numerous theatrical performances that have become a source of relentless entertainment to NUST students. On 14th March students were gathered at NBS hall as Mr. Brown, acted by Shafa’at Gillani from NBS, began teaching his class the alphabets. Brimming with talent and enthusiasm, the actors paused at the appropriate moments, milked every punchline to the maximum, and so as a combined effect rendered.

“GAMERS COLOSSEUM 2K12 ”- An E-Sports EventNUST School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science e-gaming society organized an e-sports event “GAMERS COLOSSEUM 2K12 – Call of Duty 4” from Jan 28 to 29. The e-gaming event was a pioneering effort to call upon 8 of the best COD4 teams across Pakistan and provide a platform where they could showcase their skill and talent. The tournament was organised following international standards and provided some of the best features like live streaming, spectator rooms, high performance PCs for gaming and attractive prizes. Rector NUST graced the closing ceremony of the event as the chief guest.

Emergency Medical Services Workshop at LUMSMuneeb Ullah Khan and Ahmad Raza Khan, students from MCS represented NUST at a workshop held at LUMS. The five-day BLS and MTP workshop was conducted by LUMS emergency medical services (EMS) from Feb 22 to 26 at their Lahore campus. A total of five universities including Kinnaird College University, University College Lahore, Beaconhouse National University and NAMAL participated in the national event. NUST team claimed the first position in Intervarsity quiz competition.

Inter-Company Parliamentary Debates at AMCInter-company parliamentary debates were held on March 27 at the Army Medical College in Ayub Auditorium. The judges for the event were Madam Ishrat Hyatt, a veteran journalist and Prof. Shaista Zaid, a renowned newscaster. The students acting as presidents and vice-presidents debated on the topic, ‘Culture is the most important factor in a nation’s stability’. After a very fiery debate, Nisar-e-Fatima Changezi and Sidra Riaz, from the Ayesha Company, stood first in debates thus winning the trophy. The runners-up was Razi Company represented by Daniyal Kamal and Hamza Jahangeer. Later the other day, a bilingual declamation was held at the college on March 28. The chief guest for the event was Mahmudul- Hassan, ex MS and DG Surgery of the Armed Forces. Farah Bano was declared first in the humorous category whereas, Sher Shah Khan and Zaheer Babar shared the first prize in the English serious. Ayesha Rehman stood first in the Urdu serious categories. The trophy was won by Fatima Company. The chief guest distributed prizes among the winners.

International Robotics ContestStudents from Department of Mechatronics Engineering at College of E&ME proved their mettle at the International TechFest Competition, organised by IIT Bombay, India on Feb 5. The team from NUST comprising Muhammad Ehtesham, Talha Wahab, Aamir Sohail and Sajid Mushtaq, stood first in the qualifying round at LUMS for Techfest 2012 IIT Bombay and got 2nd position in Magneto event of Techfest 2012 by eliminating two Indian teams and became the only Pakistani team toqualify for the finals. This initiative, also called “Umeed-e-Milap”, was launched by IIT in partnership with LUMS-Spades to bring together the students of both India and Pakistan. To qualify for that event, the NUST team secured first position in pre-qualifiers, “Spades IIT TechFest”, event held at LUMS, Lahore last year. The NUST team was selected as a part of Pakistani delegation to participate in “Magneto Competition of TechFest 2012, IIT Bombay”. Twenty teams participated in the competition at IIT Bombay which included sixteen top teams of India and four from Pakistan. The selected eight teams entered the knock-out round. College of E&ME team was the only Pakistani team, which not only qualified for the semifinals but also made it to the final of the event and secured second position.

Quiz competition on coastal and marine ecosystemBased on the theme of Coastal and Marine Ecosystem, a quiz competition between the personnel of COMKAR and COMCOAST Commands was held at PNS Jauhar auditorium on March 20. Commandant Pakistan Navy Engineering College (PNEC), Rear Admiral Syed Imdad Imam Jafri SI (M) graced the occasion as the chief guest. COMKAR-B team won the quiz competition, while Zohaib Ahmed PN of COMKAR-A team got the runners up prize. Addressing the ceremony, the chief guest lauded the commitment of the youth towards protecting the natural environment. He said that the quiz competition would help create an urge among the PN personnel to contribute their share towards saving the nature. In the end, the chief guest congratulated the prize winners and thanked HQ Commander Karachi for extending the requisite support for the event.

‘Sci-toons’Students from all over Pakistan participated in ‘Sci-toons’, an event which gave them the opportunity to create

their own comics i.e., a blend of both science and art. This venture was unleashed by NUST Science Society on Feb 14 in collaboration with SPARK and Mark 92. The comics were judged by the widely acclaimed social network comic gurus: Kachee Goliyan Comics and Comics by Arsalan. Syed Ayaz (NUSTSCEE) stood first and Zain Ul Abedin from Mehran University of Engineering & Technology, Jamshoro got second prize, while Seerat Fatima from K.M.C Girls Primary School, Karachi got the third position. Cash prizes and comics were distributed among the winners.

Thermocon 2012Thermocon 2012 was held from March 2-4 at GIKI. A total of 17 teams from all over Pakistan participated in the event, organized by American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) GIKI chapter. Two teams from SMME, namely Mechanical Flukes and Thermistors, performed exceptionally well throughout the competition. The main event was ‘Stacked Up’ which had further three modules; Brainiac, Thermal Tempest and Innovation. The team competed well and won the Brainiac model after clearing the general IQ test, Rapid Fire round and the third round of Thermal Tempest. In Thermal Tempest, each team was given a map of GIKI campus and multiple choice questions based on thermodynamics. After facing tough competition, Team Thermistors from NUST won the challenge and Mechanical Flukes got the third position. In the Innovation challenge, the teams had to construct a wind turbine from household items such as two Pepsi bottles, a rubber pipe, a cardboard, etc. Mechanical Flukes won the challenge. The trophy for Thermocon ’12 was awarded to team Mechanical Flukes of SMME for consistent performance throughout the event.A team from NUST Environment Club (NEC) also represented NUST in this high-profile competition. Seven executive members of NEC that participated in the Green Idea Challenge were Anum Imtiaz, Zarak Baber, Saman Khan (Team leader), Sahaab Farooq, Aman Ahmed, Hina Hanif (President NEC) and Mudassar Iqbal. The idea given by the NUST Engineering Club winning team was “Nanotechnolix” in which nanotechnology is employed to clean the waste water. This idea was based on the research work of Anum Imtiaz (MS ES03), Synthesis of Metal Oxides and its Application as Adsorbant for the Treatment of Industrial Waste Water, which was presented in 2nd International Conference of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Dec 2011, Malaysia and published in International Journal of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. The NUST team had to compete with seven other talented teams from different universities from all over Pakistan including UETs (Peshawar, Taxila, Lahore), Peshawar University, EME (NUST), NED (Karachi). Even though there was a tough competition, NUST’s team braved their way through the competition by their sheer commitment, hard work and determination and bagged the first prize of Rs. 50,000.

Trekking trip to Pir Sohawa NUST Adventure Club organised a trekking trip to Pir Sohawa on March 4 with over 450 students participating in it. The students gathered at IESE and soon afterwards left for trail number 3. For many, it was their first hiking experience and the excitement was apparent in their faces. All the hikers reached the top at the end of three-hour continuous hike and helped themselves to the delicious cuisine at the local restaurant.

Second Intra-NUST Wall Climbing CompetitionThe second Intra-NUST Wall Climbing Competition was held at the Ibex Club, Lake View Park, Islamabad in the month of January. The club holds one of the best and tallest walls of Asia scaling at a height of 60 feet including inclinations at different angles to make the ascent ever challenging. Over a 100 participants from H-12, AMC, MCS and EME College took part in the event with different categories for boys and girls. Students from NUST accepted the challenge and many of them made it to the final round. In this challenging competition, a new record was set by Mir Manzar Ilahi of SMME who scaled the wall in a breath taking 31.84 seconds.

Marathon 2012 NUST organized a marathon participated in by an overwhelming number of faculty and students on March 8. As many as 500 participants were divided into various groups according to their age and gender. The athletes had to cover a distance of approximately four kilometres. Before the marathon started, the jubilant youngsters also performed traditional ‘bhangra’ at the beat of ‘dhol.’ Pro-Rector (RIC) Engr. Muhammad Mushtaq was thechief guest at the occasion. He declared the marathon open by setting free pigeons. The marathon concluded with a prize distribution ceremony. Prizes were given to the winners namely, Mishal Saif (Girls’ category), Ahmar (Children’s category-boys), Fazeela (children category-girls), Awais (Boys’ category) and Abrar Butt (Faculty/staff category).

Badminton, table tennis championshipsIntervarsity Badminton (M) Zonal Championship 2011-12 (ZONE ‘C’) was held from Feb 10 to 14 at Muzaffarabad. Azad Jammu and Kashmir University hosted the competition played on knockout basis. NUST beat University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila and Preston University in the quarterfinal and semifinal respectively. In the final match of the competition, NUST took on Quaid-e-Azam University and outsmarted the latter with style. With this victory, NUST also qualified for the final of All Pakistan Intervarsity Badminton (M) Championship. Meanwhile, Intervarsity Table Tennis (M) Zonal Championship 2011-12 (ZONE ‘C’) was held from Feb 14 to 17 at Islamic International University, Islamabad. After remaining unbeaten in the quarterfinal and semifinal matches, NUST forced its way into the final. COMSATS team, the other finalist, did its utmost to get hold of the decisive match of the competition but their every effort went in vain as Nustians eventually rose to the occasion and clinched the trophy. The winning team also qualified for the final of All Pakistan Intervarsity Table Tennis (M) Championship.

SEECS organizes sports galaNUST SEECS Sports Gala 2012 was held from Feb 24 to 26. The much awaited event kicked off with a “Bake and Sale Competition” for girls and “Go Kinect Tournament” for boys. The undergraduate students were divided into four houses: Jinnah House, Liaqat House, Iqbal House and Sir Syed House. While the postgraduate students were divided into two houses: Qasim House and Tipu House. Not only students but staff also participated actively in games like cricket, football, badminton, table tennis, volley ball etc. Other sports including swimming, lawn tennis were also held later on February 25 and 6 at Sports Complex, Islamabad.

Funfair at MCSFunfair was the most eye catching event of the year organized by software society in May 2012. The future engineers got a chance to vent their energies and enthusiasm towards things other than books and certainly did not let this chance go waste. The students brilliantly showcased their talent for art, aesthetics and had a great fun. It started as a fun-filled colourful day ending as a festive night. Numerous stalls were arranged and beautifully decorated by the students encompassing various traditions such as “Henna”, bangles, food, song, rides and dhol wala. Overall it was an event full of color and joy which indeed left a refreshing memory on the minds of all participants.

TechnobuzzTechno buzz 2012 was organized by software society from 20th-24th Feb. It consisted of five events with audience and competitors, while the fifth event was held separately.

Gaming Competition:This competition was held in Networks lab of department of CSE from 1800-2200 hrs during the first two days of event. A total of 3 games were played, i.e. Counter strike, Call Of duty and FIFA 2011.

Poster Competition:Students submitted their posters (handmade and computer generated) on a topic specified by organizing committee.

Programming Competition:This competition was held at the simulation Lab of dept of CSE from 1800-2000 hrs on the last day of event. Programming competition consisted of mid level programming problems to be solved during 3 hours.

Technical Quiz:The quiz was held at NS auditorium from 1800-1900hrs on the last day of techno buzz. The event consisted of questions related to studies which were aimed at audience.

Entertainment Quiz:This quiz was held after technical quiz from 1900-2000 hrs. This was held to refresh the students and give them a light break from exausting period of studies.

Futsol at MCSMCS software society, hallmark of excellence, managed to arrange the FUTSOL even in the busiest schedule. In mid March, software society came up with another trendsetting event of futsol (Mini Football), in which 18 teams from the college participated. Members of faculty also took active participation in the tournament. The futsol tournament was a day night event which lasted for three days and the lucky winners won the prize money of Rs-3000/. The event was a huge source of entertainment not only for the players but also for the spectators.

NUST Aeromodeling ClubNUST Aeromodeling Club organized two Rc-Plane flying events, in which students were selected randomly. It was a 9 day event covering 3 weeks, with 3 classes per week. None of the students had any prior experience or knowledge in flying a remote controlled plane. The first week the students were trained on flight simulation software at IGIS, in which they were allowed to get themselves acquainted with using the remote control and flying a plane. The second week the students were taken to the open grounds and were given to put what they learnt from the simulations to the test, it was highly encouraging to see participants flying planes comfortably. Students were taught how to make the plane functional i.e., fueling, starting, check malfunctioning and troubleshooting.

Freehand drawing workshopNUST Fine Arts Club organized a Free Hand Drawing workshop for students to hone their drawing skills and sharpen their artistic perception. A renowned artist, Aleem Dad facilitated the workshop held on April 7 at School of Art, Design and Architecture (SADA). Under the guidance of Mr. Aleem Dad , students leant the basic drawing techniques and their applications were also discussed and practiced by the students. The workshop dealt with the subjects of setting up useable workspace, fundamental drawing and sketching skills, proportional judgment techniques (the heart of freehand drawing) with practical drawing exercises to explain this most important aspect, perspective, depth of field, composition, subject selection and capture, light and dark (chiaroscuro), and the art of suggestion.

Quest for TitlesA frisky talent hunt with the name of “Quest for titles”, organized by Military College of Signals was an attraction for many talented students to showcase their potential. The event spanned for over 3 weeks from April 12-26. The event consists of a total 9 categories of which the most popular were Artist, Writer and IQ Specialist. 3 challenges were set for each category and to ensure impartiality both in-house jurors as well as external jurors were invited.On announcing the talented winners, Anas Bin Saif and Aaiza Umar emerged as Urdu and English Writers while Asad Ahmed claimed the title of Artist. Where on the other hand, Ahthsham Khawaja was crowned IQ Specialist and Muhammad Saad Zia was given title of a Scientist.

National Rock Climbing Competition

A team from NUST Adventure Club participated in the national rock climbing competition , held at Islamic International University. The event was organized in collaboration with Higher Education Commission (HEC). Students from all over Pakistan took part for the top honors on May1 and showed keen interest in the climbing gale. A team headed by Syed Zaki ud din, an active climber from NUST Adventure Club participated and secured second position in the speed climbing competition with only a difference of 3 seconds, while a student from Islamic University stood first. Prize distribution ceremony was held and shields and trophies were distributed among the winners.

Scavenger Hunt’12 Numerous students from NUST campus gathered to participate in the Scavenger Hunt: ‘Chase-A-Trace’. The challenge wast designed like a puzzle, with the pieces being a set of interrelated clues, which were spread across the H-12 campus. In teams of five, the contestants were required to complete the mission following the clues.The fun-filled event organized by the NUST Science Society, incorporated elements testing the participants’ knowledge of basic science and common sense. The question of the day proved to be ‘Gallus Gallus wrapped in off white circle’, and the answer was simply a Shawarma, Gallus Gallus being the scientific name in taxonomy of a chicken! An infiltration of mischief was inevitable as the contestants’ singing abilities were tested in order for them to get the next set of clues. Knowledge of the nature of different buildings in H-12 was also important, with hints like ‘the zoo of H-12’ pointing to the animal lab at Atta-ur-Rehman School of Applied Bio-sciences. Top three teams were chosen on basis of maximum tasks accomplished in minimum time and were awarded cash prizes.

Intervarsity NUST Thematic Fest’12

The twin-city event was held at College of E&ME from May 18-20 and was organized by “Shaur Club” which is the social awareness wing of NUST Volunteers Club. To challenge creativity and learning; painting, calligraphy, sketching and creative writing competitions were arranged. To boost Problem solving and Research Orientation, students participated in Research-based Essay writing competition. There was a Quiz where students’ proficiency in fundamental branches of knowledge was judged. An all time famous event Kasauti was arranged for the final qualifiers in this event. Students from various Universities participated and displayed their skills at oratory, singing and presenting through Debates and cultural depiction events. Inspiring speakers and young professionals were invited to quench the students’ thirst for knowledge.

Pantomime 2012

MCS Training Battalion organized Pantomime 2012 on May 18 to bid farewell to graduating/ outgoing courses of TCC-20 & BESE-14. Pantomime traditionally is the last extracurricular event of the academic year which provides quality entertainment to the audience including faculty members, families, and the students. Major General Shahid Maqbool, Commandant Military College of Signals graced the event as chief guest. The medals were given by the chief guest to the cadets standing best in various categories viz. Best in Academics, Overall Best NUST Cadet, Overall Best Military Cadet, Best in Sports, Best in Extra-curricular Activities, and Special Performance Medal; these awards were respectively won by NC Sidra Javed, NC Rabia Sultan Abbasi, CJUO Hamza Ishtiaque, CSUO Saad Bin Shafqat, SGT Waqas Ahmed and NC Omar Rehman.The pantomime included heart touching motivational movie, colorful short skits based on life of students sprinkled with memories of senior students in MCS. Apart from dramatics; funny fillers,live musical performance and dance performances by the students also formed part of the show.

Annual Sports Meet 2012 The Sports and Adventure Society (SAS) organized the Annual Sports Meet 2012 from May 11-13 at the college of E&ME. A total of 14 sports, including 9 sports for males, and 5 sports for females, were to be contested over a total of three days between the College of E & ME, Bahria University and NUST-H-12. The Annual Sports Meet 2012 kicked off with competitive fixtures between H-12 and EME teams on Friday, 11th May. Day 2 started off the main proceedings as E&ME College went head to head with Bahria University in Cricket (Male), Basketball (Male) and Badminton (Female). The Basketball match especially between two teams of great caliber, was exhilarating to watch. In the end Bahria came out as deserved winners, on the back of an exceptional performance from Uzair Ahmed.However, in the female competition, Bahria dominated in Volleyball and Basketball, while EME College was able to win in badminton. Day 3 had more sporting action in store as EME College faced with Bahria University in football, tennis, squash, hockey, volleyball and badminton. While EME College took the football and badminton titles overall, Bahria University proved to be the better side in the other four sports. Bahria University were able to secure the overall title, coming out as winners of the Annual Sports Meet 2012.

Intervarsity football and volleyball championships All Pakistan Intervarsity Women Football Championship, final round was held at NUST Football Ground, H-12, Islamabad from April 1-6. NUST Sports Department organized and hosted the said championship in which 7 women football teams participated from LUMS, Punjab University, Islamia, Bahawalpur, Frontier Women University, Peshawar, LCW, Karachi and Sargodha University. The Championship was played on League basis. Frontier Women University outplayed Sargodha University in the finals and won the overall women’s football championship trophy.Another sports event, All Pakistan Intervarsity Volleyball Championship 2011-12, final round was held at Indoor hall PMAS Arid University Rawalpindi from April 25-28. NUST organized the championship once again in which almost 15 teams participated. The championship was played on knock out basis. University of Peshawar and Agriculture University Peshawar competed against each other in the male finals and University of Peshawar emerged as the winners of the tournament.

Women’s Badminton TournamentOn the second day of the Inter-departmental badminton tournament of girls organized by Training Battalion,(Military College of Signals) finals were played on April 12 at the university campus. The tour-nament was arranged in coordination with Telecom Society. As many as 26 female cadets participated enthusiastically in the championship while faculty was also gathered to encourage the students. Mrs CoI Brig Inayat Ullah Khan Niazi was invited as the Chief Guest. Sadia Riffat from MCS was the winner of the tournament, while Javeria Iftikhar remained the runner up.

Rifle Shooting Championships16th All Pakistan Intervarsity Rifle Shooting (M) Championship 2011-12 was held at Gun & Country Club, PSB Islamabad from June 21-27. Higher Education Commission organized the championship and grouped the matches in two categories of Men and Women. As many as 13 universities from across Pakistan participated in the competition. NUST team outshone all others in an outstanding match and grabbed two gold medals. The team comprised of 7 players, namely Aneeq Ahmed from SCME who grabbed a gold medal and Mr. Aneeq Ahmed together with Shehreyar Shafique from NICE won the team gold medal. Intervarsity Rifle Shooting Championship for Women 2011-12 was held at Indoor hall Gun & country Club the same day. NUST organized the championship in which 6 women teams participated including those from NUST, Punjab University, GCU Lahore, COMSATS, Baluchistan and B.B.S. University, Peshawar. NUST women team performed extremely well and secured the bronze medal in 10 M Air Pistol event.

Shining StarsWith a view to bringing happiness and smiles to the faces of underprivileged, NUST Community Service Club organized another event titled “Shining Stars” for the little angels of SOS Village. On the first day of the three-day event, the little kids arrived at SEECS seminar hall and were shown ‘PUSS IN BOOTS’ with Urdu dubbing. During the interval, the children were provided with refreshments and were entertained by songs. They cheerfully intermingled with NCSC volunteers and members making it a memorable night for them. Next day, the children visited School of Art, Design and Architecture (SADA) where the NCSC team along with the Fine Arts Club team warmly greeted them. They were led to a classroom where charts, colours, pencils etc. fascinated them to exhibit their painting skills. On the third day, the Web Technology Lab and Database Lab were reserved for the children. They were given tasks to work on Microsoft Paint and make different designs. Once again what they produced was exceptional. The ideas they put into their paintings were very innovative and awe-inspiring. Among others, the closing ceremony was attended by Dr Abdul Ghafoor (Principal SMME), Dr Ishfaque (Principal NBS), and Mr and Mrs Irtiza Ali Shah. The certificates were distributed among the children and their mothers by the chief guest.
