Details and Learning outcomes of the workshops/ learning sessions and field visits
The Science Demonstration Laboratory (SDL) is a
platform set up at the NUS Faculty of Science to
promote interest in science through hands-on scientific
experiments and demonstrations.
The SDL now houses 30 or more illuminating science
experiments and it never fails to spring surprises on
visitors with its repertoire of demonstrations.
Learning Objectives
During the workshop, students explore and discover
science through ‘playing” and interactive learning.
Seeking to expound the principle of “I see and I
remember; I do and I understand”, the SDL builds
students’ understanding around visually and
intellectually impactful examples of scientific
phenomena.
Many visitors have walked away feeling both educated
and entertained and we are certain you will too!
NUS Science Demonstration Laboratory
Have you heard…..
Physics Equals FUN?
In this session you will get a chance to DISCOVER a
SCIENTIST within you!!!!
The Department of Physics at National University of
Singapore, has always strived to give participants an
experiential learning and motivate them to pursue career
in the field of Science and Technology.
Experiments are designed to give students the
opportunities to learn ``relevant’’ Physics through
experimentations.
Learning Outcome
During the session participants will apply their science
skills to create a DIY toy wherein the scientific principles
behind how it works will be discussed.
Most importantly, the students will be allowed to take
home their finished work.

DIY Toys Workshop
The Chemical, Molecular and Materials Analysis
Centre (CMMAC) is a central instrumentation facility
providing professional support to teaching and research
in the academia and industry. The instruments in the
CMMAC laboratories encompass a wide range of
analytical techniques.
The Centre consists of a consortium of laboratories,
namely: 1. Chromatography Laboratory
2. Elemental Analysis Laboratory
3. Mass Spectrometry Laboratory
4. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Laboratory
5. X Ray Diffraction Laboratory
6. Electron Microscopy Laboratory
Learning Objectives
The students will tour NUS’s facilities in spectroscopy
and microscopy including scanning tunneling
microscopes, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, proton
accelerator etc which would help them understand and
appreciate the applications of various instruments in the
scientific world.
Chemical, Molecular, Material Analysis Centre
The Nano-Science workshop introduces the workings
and applications of a few different types of microscopes
in examining materials at micro and nano levels.
The students get to have hands-on experience on both
light (long and short working distance) and scanning
electron microscopes and will take home their favorite
self-taken micrographs, along with insights on the
microscopy itself.
Learning Objectives
The main impact of this workshop is that it brings the
nano-science research and experiments to the
participants’ level, enabling them to be immersed in the
excitement and novelty of science at the cutting edge.
Through the workshop, participants will now
experience science that they might only have read
about in the news.
Nano-Technology Workshop
Mangrove Ecosystem Study
Mangroves are one of the most unique ecosystems
that have always been economically important to man
and have provided us with food and all manner of
products for thousands of years.
In nature, mangrove ecosystems provide services like
providing food to fisheries, natural sewage-treatment
and coastal protection.
Learning Objectives
In this session, students will be taken for a field-trip to
a mangrove ecosystem by NUS Professors and given
a first-hand experience about the various aspects of
the ecosystem.
The students will study both the flora and fauna of the
ecosystem during the low tide.
The session will also provide the students with the
appreciation and deeper understanding of such a vital
natural ecosystem.
Description
In this workshop, students take up the role of a
Forensic Scientist and solve a famous real crime case
using DNA analysis techniques. Students learn about
the basics of DNA fingerprinting through a forensic
investigation and how to analyse DNA evidence found
at the crime scene.
Learning Outcomes
Training in handling scientific equipment and
conducting procedures such as micro-pipetting, gel
electrophoresis techniques and case studies on DNA
profiling.
Students will also learn different ways of processing
evidence and investigate the difference between
subjective and objective techniques used in crime
laboratories. Thus, they will understand more about
DNA and it’s significance in Forensic Sciences.
DNA in Forensic Science
Jellies, Jell-o, and much more!
Jellies! Many of us just love our desserts and are
much aware of the texture of jellies.
Jellies are colloid commonly known as gel. By
definition, gels are solids because it does not flow.
Gelling agents are made up of very special
molecules. In the right condition, these molecules will
interact to form a three dimensional cross-linked
structure that are able to trap liquid within. Gelling
agents form a continuous phase while liquid forms the
dispersed phase.
Learning Outcome
During the workshop, participants will experience the
products of different types of gelling agents in the form
of delicious food (hopefully!) and learn the science
behind them.
What better way to learn Science than to be able to enjoy
it in the form of delicious food?

Towards the end..
It was a privilege to participate in the NUS science camp. All the lectures were very interesting and interactive and amidst the
high standards of their teaching. The most exciting was the DNA fingerprint through a forensic investigation in the crime lab. I
got to learn one important thing, as one professor said, " Why do we learn science? For Fun! " The camp helped me to make
many new friends from different parts of the world. The NUS summer camp was truly not to be missed.
Maple Leaf International School, Bangladesh
Student Speak
The camp has taught me how much Science
is crucial to “humanity” and how its all
about “having fun”. I would definitely
recommend to attend it as it’s a once-in-a-
lifetime event. The Shri Ram School, India
The NUS Science Camp introduced me to a new dimension of learning, ranging from lectures on nanotechnology to a
‘hands-on' session of animal classification. I especially enjoyed the "DNA in Forensic Science" and felt like a real forensic
scientist!. On the whole, it was an innovative experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Elizabeth Moir Senior School , Sri Lanka
The camp helped me in so many more ways
than I could have ever imagined. Not only did
it open up my knowledge and allow it to
expand, it also helped me create friendships I
never thought I would make.
The science camp had the perfect mix of
education, fun, and touring. Overall, I really
enjoyed this science camp, and am so happy
that I came.
Waubonsie Valley High School, USA
The NUS summer Camp was an exhilarating experience. One of the favourite session was the formidable demo lab in
Physics . The 5 days that we spent at NUS provided us an insight into the world of science, the history of Singapore and its
role as an important hub for business and financial transactions. In particular, we found the Nanotechnology sessions very
inspiring. We hope that this experience will enable us to think differently and encourage us to become creative, as we
embark on the careers of our choice.
The International School Bangalore, India
