The Celebration of the Lord’s Day

THE CHURCH GATHERS TO PRAISE

We welcome you to St. Luke UMC. This worship experience is planned, from beginning to end, to assure an opportunity to encounter the presence of God. As we gather to worship our Lord, feel free to greet your “neighbors.” However, when the Prelude begins, please take your seats and prepare your hearts and minds for worship. Out of courtesy for your brothers and sisters in faith, silence your cell phones so that we can be in a spirit of worship throughout the service. A nursery is available for children, newborn to age 2. Please see an usher or sound tech if you would like to use one of our hearing devices. We believe you will find this worship experience meaningful for your spiritual maturity. If you must leave the sanctuary for whatever reason, the service is projected across the hall in the Conference Room.

TO WORSHIP GOD AND CONFESS OUR FAITH

+Opening Prayer (in unison)

We come to church hungry, Lord! We are hungry for comfort, hungry for love, hungry for a new way of living, hungry for your Word. As we gather around this altar and later kneel, thank you for giving us this place and this time to worship, and we are eager to taste your goodness in community, with our brothers and sisters. As One Body, unite us, refresh us, renew us as we seek to serve your greater purposes in life. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

Call to Prayer: (all sing together)

Lord, listen to your children praying, Lord, send your Spirit in this place; Lord, listen to your children praying, send us love, send us power, send us grace.

Pastoral Prayer

Chorus (all sing together)

I cast all my cares upon You. I lay all of my burdens down at Your feet. And any time I don't know what to do; I will cast all my cares upon You.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

TO OFFER OUR TITHES, OFFERINGS AND GIFTS TO GOD

We Worship God with His Tithes and Our Offerings

Offertory Behold the Man Chancel Choir

+Doxology (all sing together)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise him all creatures here below. Praise him above, ye heav'nly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

+Offertory Prayer (in unison) We give you our thanks for the physical gifts that sustain us and for the added blessings which make life more joyful and full. We rejoice that you freely pour out the perfume of your love, even though we are not worthy to receive it. We are thankful for those who have been bountiful towards us, giving of their time, their skills and their love. As a token of our gladness, may we also bless others, being generous with all that you have bestowed. Amen

+Prayer of Illumination (in unison) Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the Scriptures are read and your Word proclaimed we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen

+Scripture Reading John 12:1-8 Pew Bible NT Page 874

Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 2 There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. 3 Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them[a] with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, 5 “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii[b] and the money given to the poor?” 6 (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) 7 Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She bought it[c] so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. 8 You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”
