The population of Greenville High School is 1277 and the population of Greenville is 8481. 91% of Greenville residents are Caucasian. 1/3 of the businesses in Greenville are manufacturing businesses and the mean income is around $30,000 per year(City Data, 2012). 1

It can wait..turn it off! This video is to catch the attention of the students and to show them what could happen as a result of texting and driving (nick1111341, 2009). 2Distracted Driving is the diversion of attention away from activities critical for safe driving. Distracted driving causes a person to have impairments in 3 critical areasLonger reaction time braking & traffic signalsImpaired ability to keep in the same laneShorter following time

What is distracted driving?

According to the World Health Organization (2012) distraction driving affects all age groups but is particularly striking among those aged 15-29 years old. All of these types of distractions are also known as Cognitive Distractions and are even more dangerous with increasing applications such as email and internet access via smart phones.

3Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of DEATHS for teenagersTexting while driving is a distraction83% of all teens own a cell phone but only 70% own a bookTexting in Greenville instead of Grand Rapids does not make it saferFacts

Here we are trying to educate the students without boggling their minds with statistics they wont remember. This is our attempt to meet the goal objective in Healthy People 2020 of Improve the healthy development, health, safety, and well-being of adolescents and young adults (United States Department of Health and Human Services, 2012).4First fine $100.00Caught again $200.00A youth in Massachusetts caught texting and driving involved in a fatal accident was charged with VEHICULAR HOMICIDEIts against the law

Another attempt to persuade the youth by telling them it is against the law (Michigan State Police, 2012)5Michigan is the 24th state to ban drivers from texting. The primary enforcement law prohibits drivers from:Reading a textManually typing a textSending a text

The Law

More about the law from the Michigan State Police.6The Michigan State police formulated this campaignTheir focusTo have drivers recognize the potential hazards when they are not fully focused on the roadTo remind drivers to keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheelTo explain the 3 types of distractions while drivingThumbs on the Wheel Campaign

The Office of Highway Safety Planning is launching this program to encourage awareness & compliance (Michigan State Police, 2010)

7Visual-taking your eyes off the roadManual-taking your hands off the wheelCognitive-taking your mind off what you are doing3 Types of Distraction

This slide explains the 3 types of distractions outlined in the Thumbs on the Wheels Campaign (Michigan State Police, 2010).8In 2009, the state recorded 947 people were using cell phones at the time of a crash. That would be similar to 3 out of 4 kids sitting next to you. If you think it wont happen to you YOURE WRONG

It could happen to you

According to Piaget, adolescence children are in the formal operations stage of cognitive development. They have what is called an illusion of invulnerability. This refers to the concept that bad things only happen to others (Kail, 2010).9What if a doctor took your appendix out while texting on his phoneTexting while driving is just as dangerous as drinking and drivingYour brain does not have the ability to concentrate on driving and texting at the same timeThings to think about

According to Amy Ship M.D. (2010), Talking to patients about distractions while driving should be part of our primary assessments.10Turn off your phone when getting into a vehicleAsk your friends to do the sameDriveMode-a mobile app for your phone from AT&TTake the pledge to not text and drive

How to stop doing it

According to Johnson (2012) there are ways to deter texting and driving. AT&T has developed a mobile application that when enabled and the vehicle is moving 25 mph, the app automatically sends a customizable auto reply message to incoming texts, letting friends know youre behind the wheel and will reply when it is safe (AT&T, 2012).

11To stay aliveIts considered Compulsive behaviorTo make it to graduationBecause many people care about youWhy stop doing it

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) (2012) teenage cell phone use has developed into Compulsive Cell Phone Use. In an article called Driven to Distraction the AAP reports that teens anticipating calls or messages may distract drivers therefore increasing the risks of a car crash. This was based on an online anonymous survey of 384 teens (AAP, 2012).

12No Phone Zone

Hand Held Cell Devices

Hands Free Devices

Audio & Visual Signals

The available research indicates that cell phone use while driving, whether it is a hands-free or hand-held device, degrades a drivers performance. The driver is more likely to miss key visual and audio cues needed to avoid a crash. Hand-held devices may be slightly worse, but hands-free devices are not risk-free. (CDC, 2012). Hand held devices leave you cognitively distracted and they alter your sense of hearing (2012).

13The TragedyFinal thoughts on the consequences of texting and driving. Bring home the cost of texting and driving by placing the victims of the IM ON MY WAY demonstration in this scenario. 14ConclusionTAKE THE PLEDGE

A final visual reminder as to what texting and driving will cost the distracted driver. The purpose of this slide is to leave a lasting impression on the audience as they leave the auditorium. The goal is to get them to take the pledge and potentially avoid another senseless tragedy. 15American Academy of Pediatrics (2012, April 29). Driven to distraction.
