NURSES ON THE FRONTLINE IN CATH LAB
How to reduce risk and reduce infection and ready for disaster
Risk in cath lab…..
Preventable
Can be minimized
But not eliminated
What matters?
Personnel Safety
6 INTERNATIONAL Patient Safety Goals
GOAL 1
Identify patients correctly
Goal 2
Improve effective communication
Goal 3
Improve the safety of high- alert medications
Cont. IPSGGoal 4
Ensure correct-site, correct-procedure, correct –patient surgery
Goal 5
Reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections
Goal 6
Reduce the risk of patient harm from falls
1. Identify patients correctly
Use at least two ways to identify a patient for
procedure :- wrist tag
- checklist
2. Improve effective
communication
Help prevent errors in your care so …………..
Speak UP Bio-hazard notification
 Team work
3.Improve the safety of high-
alert medications
Remove the concentrated electrolytes e.g. Potassium Chloride from the crash cart
To segregate the LOOK-ALIKE and SOUND-ALIKE drugs in the lab
4. Ensure Correct-site,Correct-
Procedure,Correct-Patient Surgery
Use a checklist, including a TIME OUT , just before starting the
procedure to ensure the right patient, procedure and site.
5.Reduce the risk of healthcare-
associated infections CDC guidelines, APHIC and OSHA standards
have revised policy. Staff must:
- Wear hair covers when in the lab
- Wear masks during set up trolley and procedure
- During PPM, all staff in the room wear a mask and a hat. The door to the room is kept closed.
BUT……………….
I have never seen an infection from a cath procedure!
Wearing masks during set up trolley and for pacer procedure is a good idea but a bit of an overkill for a cath.
Infection control procedures
including
 Aseptic technique
 Routine and terminal cleaning everyday
 Sharps handling and disposal
 Handling of sterile items
6.Reduce the risk of patient harm
from falls
 Patient transport:
 - recovery
 - lab
Others………. Don’t underestimate radiation hazard
Baseline FBP, T4, Hep B antigen and antibody
 Patient education
