FROM THE PRINCIPAL
WELCOME
What a wonderful start to our year. The first day was
very calm, students remembered which class they were going to and
were happy to move off with their new teacher. The classes were
settled within the first few minutes of our new school year. We are
seeing very settled classes still and students are in routine and
engaged in their learning. The new Reception students are doing very
well and are managing their new environment and have transitioned
into school life quickly and are also very engaged in new learning.
We have many new families join our school community, welcome and we
hope you will enjoy being a part of the Nuriootpa School Community as
much as I do. If you have any concerns about your child(ren) please do
not hesitate to contact their teacher, Ann-Marie (Deputy) or myself.
We are all here to work with you to bring about the most positive
learning experiences for your child(ren).
WELCOME TO OUR NEW STUDENTS AND FAMILIES
OUR STAFF
We have had a few staffing changes over the holidays. Unfortunately Rebecca Desmond has
left us because she found a position at a school much closer to her home. Deb Wilson has also
left to find new employment. We wish them both well. Emma Lukong has replaced Rebecca and
is working across three classes, she is doing amazing work and our children have responded to
her well. Jayde Sherriff has replaced Deb and she is already showing she has excellent skills
and is developing positive relationships with families and staff.

Also joining our staff is Angus Bugeja who is working with the R-7’s in the area of Performing
Arts – music focus. Some of you would have already received information from Angus about hiring
musical instruments so your child can participate in our school band. Angus has already started
working with our junior choir, and our senior choir will begin work within the next couple of weeks.
We are very excited about this new focus in our school and we are hoping to develop music across
the school to provide new and enriching experiences for our students.

Pastoral Care Worker
This week we continued the process for nominating a Well Being Co-ordinator (Counsellor) for
the school. Anne Thomas won this position for 2019 and will be working on Thursday and
Fridays in this role. On one day she will be working in classes on a new programme called Bounce
Back which helps students to become more resilient. The other day will be spent in more of a
counselling role. While Anne is doing this role Emma Lukong will be in the classroom.
BOSHC NEWS
During the holidays a panel was formed to go through a formal process of selecting a provider
for our Out of School Hours Care. This process developed over the last few years for sites like
ours who have third party providers. This was an involved process where the panel reviewed all
applications, scored the evidence according to the Departments criteria and then made a
recommendation. Happy Haven was the successful applicant and we welcome them to our
fabulous site. In saying that we have been very fortunate to have BOSHC as our third party
providers over many years. The personnel at BOSHC have been wonderful to work with and the
programmes they have offered have certainly been of a high standard. Although we expect to
see some minor changes to our before and after school care programme, we hope these will be
minimal. It has been Happy Havens practice to offer current personnel employment, so we are
hoping our current staffing will remain the same. For all of those who have supported BOSHC
over the last many years, thank you for your work and offering our site such an excellent
service.
PARENT INFORMATION SHARING MEETINGS
I hope all parents have taken the opportunity to meet with their child(rens) teacher over this
week. We decided to trial this format this year as opposed to our traditional Open Night
because we want to hear from each of you about your child and find out as much about them as
we can. Formal interviews will be held later in the term where teachers will be sharing with you
your child’s academic progress.
GOVERNING COUNCIL
I hope you will be able to join us at our Governing Council AGM on Monday 18TH February. We
will meet at 7.00p.m. in the staffroom. Thank you to the Governing Council members who have
supported the school to further develop in 2018.
Those members who are retiring this year are Alex Stokoe, Rita Galas, Sahara Rosenzweig and
Stephen Garrett while Jenny Doecke, Robyn Salfischberger, Shannon Ellard and Garry Pentland.
Janine Gladigau and Anne Thomas will continue for another year. I hope those who are retiring
will consider another term on Governing Council. There is always room for new people to join
this group who support the school through ensuring our money is being spent appropriately and
to our budget, whilst monitoring the implementation of the Site Improvement Plan.
From Governing Council we develop some sub committees to oversee the development of our
grounds and work with our OSCH services to make sure it is meeting our family’s needs. We are
very sorry to see Sahar has finished her time on Governing Council because all of her children
are now at the High School. Sahar has been a wonderful member of GC for many years and held
office positions and been a positive GC member who has always worked to improve our site for
our students. Below is the nomination form, can you please complete and return to school by
Monday .
Students who are on school grounds before 8.30am and after 3.30pm are not supervised
and the school is not able to take responsibility for them. Before 8.30am students need to
wait under the shelter near the staffroom and after 3.30pm they are asked to come to
the office so we can contact families.
NEW LUNCH CLUBS
To provide our students with more options during lunch play time we have 5 different clubs
meeting during the week. These are open to all students and we encourage them to come along
and try something new. On Monday we have Chess in the library; Tuesday Lego and toy cars in
the STEM area; Wednesday beading in the Stem area; Thursday Belong Club with Jess in the
Well-being room and card games and puzzles in the STEM area and Friday Origami and paper
crafts. Also Junior Choir will be held on Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes in the Music Room.

PASTORAL CARE WORKER
LAP NEWS
Hello Families,
Getting back into the rhythm of a new school year can often be a bittersweet time for
us as parents, but also our children! New classes, old routines, new jobs, old friends –
whatever your situation I am sure you have some new experiences and some old ones to
navigate. Some of these experiences we will enjoy more than others, as you continue
this new year I encourage you to incorporate a ‘Daily Family Check List’ that you can use
to help keep your family home a positive and loving one. You could do this over dinner
time or spread it throughout your day. It might look something like this:
EVERY DAY AS A FAMILY HAVE WE:
Had a laugh together?
Said “I Love you”?
Shared a positive moment about your day?
Given a hug?
Done something kind?
“We may not have it all together, but together we have it all”
I will be working at Nuriootpa Primary School on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s with my
office located next to the community centre/breakfast club building. I am available to
give family support if needed and can be contacted via the front office. Look forward to
seeing many of you in the coming weeks!
Jess Baker
Hi everyone,
I am happy to report that this year
LAP is situated in the STEM area, so
there are no stairs to navigate. I would
love to have more parents ,
grandparents and friends of the school
becoming mentors this year. We always
have children needing this program. I
would love to have mentors for all my
children this year. Please contact me
at the school for more info.
Thankyou,
Michelle Rose (LAP Coordinator)

“I am a mum of 2, my 17 year old son, and 12 year old daughter. I have always lived in South Australia however moved to Kapunda 3 years ago, preferring the country lifestyle to that of Adelaide. My daughter was diagnosed with epilepsy 6 years ago following a spontaneous seizure at after school care. Prior to this I had not ever seen anybody have a seizure or had experi-ence knowing someone with epilepsy. Epilepsy is largely misunderstood and I have had to do a lot of learning, and continue to learn new things about epilepsy. Please join us to learn about what is epilepsy, the types of seizures, what to do if someone has a seizure, and how we manage everyday as an epilepsy family.” We hope to see you there!
