The General Council

Summertime…, pleasant time.

 Francisco Javier Álvarez Munguía

Summer is a propitious timeto devote oneself to activi-ties that are out of the ordi-nary, not only because theseare more numerous, but also

because ordinary obligationsoccupy less time. This wasthe case of Javier Álvarez,

Vicar General. He began thesummer by leading a four-day retreat for the five Coun-cils of the Italian Daughtersof Charity.

He collaborated later in the “Courses of VincentianReflection” in Avila (Spain) during the week of 11-17 July. From 27 July to 4 August, he took part, to-gether with the Superior General, in a three-day fes-tive meeting in Baltimore (USA) on the occasion of

the unification of four provinces of the Daughters of Charity into a new one, “Saint Louise.” He took ad-vantage of his presence in America to have, under the

presidency of the Superior General, a meeting with“The Franz Foundation,” at which Fathers Maloneyand Heinen also took part.

On 8-9 August, he collaborated in Paris with twodays of formation directed toward the formators’group from the Provinces of the Daughters of Charity

of Eastern Europe. From the 10th

of the same month,he spent a few days in his birthplace, Burgos, andwill return to the Curia House on 4 September.

Interreligious Dialogue with Islam

Varghese ThottamkaraTaking into consideration thegrowing presence of Islam inmany countries and the factthat the Vincentian Mission-aries in many places are facedwith this reality and struggleto find ways of peaceful co-existence and collaboration,

the Superior General set up a commission to organize an

international symposium on “Interreligious Dialogue withIslam.”

The organizing commission of this symposium was led byconfreres, Claudio Santangelo and Francisco Armada. After a process of deliberation, the seat of this meetingwas chosen: Pacet, Indonesia, a country with a large Mus-lim population. The meeting took place from 7-17 Au-gust. Sixty-three members of the Vincentian family from30 countries participated in it. They had the opportunityto listen, discuss, and share their experiences of working

with Muslim brothers and sisters.

Persons of both the Catholic and Islam faiths expoundedon the theological, philosophical, and practical aspects of dialogue, collaboration, and coexistence.

The testimonies of many Daughters of Charity and Mus-lim volunteers gave the participants an opportunity to un-derstand that with friendship and charity it is possible tofind ways of dialogue and collaboration, which will pavethe way to peaceful coexistence.

The Visitor of Indonesia, Robertus Wijanarko, as well asthe Daughters of Charity personally supported this activ-ity. The Symposium had the presence of the Assistants,Varghese Thottamkara and Zeracristos Yosief, from theGeneral Curia.

National Meeting of the Vincentian Family in Goiânia

Eli Chaves, on a trip to Brazil from 16 June to 4 July, took part in the National Meeting of the Vin-centian Family in Goiânia, which had the participation of 70 persons from ten branches. In Rio deJaneiro, he met with the National Council of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and with RosaMomesso, International President of MISEVI.

During these activities, he had the opportunity to get to know the challenges of the VincentianFamily’s work in Brazil and especially to sense the happiness with the significant achievements of

cooperation existing among the branches, particularly the development of the Popular Missions, the effort to under-stand and to put into practice the proposal of Systemic Change, and the increasing formation work that the Brazilian

confreres carry out especially together with the laity of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.

The Complete Works of Saint Vincent will be published inBrazil.

The launch of the first volume of the Complete Works of Saint Vincentde Paul, translated into the Portuguese language, is foreseen for the be-ginning of 2012. This is really an important historical event for theVincentian Family of Brazil. The 14 volumes, which contain letters, conferences, and other documents, are texts of indescribable depth andindispensable relevancy for all those who want to find in Saint Vincenta sure model of the experience of Christian values, an impulse for themission, and a fascinating stimulus for charity.

More than just a biography, the reading of Saint Vincent’s texts can re-veal to us the depth of his heart and his spirit: the humility, the deepening of his great charity, the humanism and sen-

sibility of his heart, the extremely loving tenderness for the poor and for his spiritual sons and daughters, the tirelessfight for the cause of the indigent and suffering, the radiation of his virtues in the work against suffering in the Franceof his time, the fruitful creativity of his initiatives, the wealth of the gifts with which Providence filled him, and fi-nally, the miracle of his life.

All the members of the Vincentian Family are invited to approach this abundant and crystalline source. Those whowant to reserve their copies of the first volume can get in touch with the organizers of the publication at:[email protected] .

“I prefer to die in the midst of the worst sufferings than to renounce the truefaith.”

News Bulletin from the General Curia of the Congregation of the Mission

We congratulate Deacon Mathew Raphael, who, on 21 June, was or-dained a priest in Songea’s Cathedral by the Archbishop of this arch-diocese, Norbert Mtega. He is the third confrere to be ordained fromthe Tanzania Mission. Mathew’s first Mass was in the Parish of Bom-bambilly. During this Mass, the new Superior of the Mission of Tan-zania, Varghese Ayampilly, was installed.

The four missionaries in Papua New Guinea; an American confrere from theProvince of China; the new Provincial of the Philippines, Venerando Agner;

coadjutor brother from the Philippines; the Assistant General, VargheseThottamkara; 29 priests; and 13 bishops assisted at the celebration.

As for the current situation of this mission, at this moment there are four missionaries. Emmanuel Lapaz has come from the Philippines to serve inHoly Spirit Seminary, accompanying Justin Eke, a Nigerian. WłodzimierzMałota, a Polish confrere, continues in the mountains with the Goilas, carry-ng out an excellent work of evangelization and social promotion in the areaf education. The parish entrusted to the Congregation is not just one, but corre-ponds to a territory of some five parishes, without easy access; the bishop has sent

him two native priests in order for them to learn parochial administration. A com-panion, who will come from Lebanon, is awaited for Włodzimierz.

The parish for which Homero Marín of Colombia is responsible is one of the largest in the archdiocese and de-mands much work in a wide field of rural, urban, and suburban areas with schools, a prison, a mental health hospi-al, and communities, among others. At present, it awaits the arrival of a Nigerian, who will collaborate with

Homero.

Wealth that brings diversity with it.

The Episcopal Ordination of our confrere,Rolando Santos, took place with a celebra-tion that was very happy and full of greathope. Inhabitants of the entire region as-sisted, many of them after long days of travel, but without losing the enthusiasm

and happiness that characterizes them. Itwas a ceremony with a village flavor andwith indigenous displays through which itwas possible to appreciate the cultural andspiritual values of the people of this place.

CIFVincentian Leadership CourseFrom 25 June to 23 July, the Vincentian Leader-ship Course, focusing on the Vincentian as Ser-vant, was held in the Motherhouse of the Con-gregation of the Mission in Paris. It was organ-ized by CIF, the International Formation Center of the Congregation.

Twenty-eight missionaries of different provinces

and nationalities took part; from America: con-freres of the United States, Guatemala, Hondu-ras, Brazil, Peru, and Colombia; from Europe, missionaries of the provinces of Spain andFrance; from Africa: Cameroon and Kenya; fromAsia: Lebanon, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

The course, which was methodologically a workshop directed toward

local superiors, was structured in four weeks. The first week the topicscentered on the foundations of leadership: Biblical, cultural, and, of course, Vincentian. During the second week the subject matter con-cerned the concept of “community.”

For the two remaining weeks, they were on the conditions of leadershipin the ecclesial sphere and the Vincentian area itself. The presenterswere missionaries of the Congregation like Hugh F. O’Donnell, from theUSA, an expert on Saint Vincent; and Dan Paul Borlik, missionary for many years in Central America. There were also shared reflections byJosé Carlos Fonsatti, Biblical scholar from the Brazilian Province of Riode Janeiro, and Marcelo Manimtim from the Province of the Philippines, both of whom make up CIF’s coordination team.

Saint Justin De Jacobis

He was man with immense openness in order to “make himself all to all” with a

great capacity for adapting, which allows us today to discover the Vincentian pathsfor our mission.
