3-DIGIT NUMBERS ON THE ABACUS

Numbers up to 999

We know that 100 comes after 99. So, 99 is the last two-digit number and

100 is the first three-digit number.

Now, see how we read hundred (H) on the abacus.

is written as @

is shown as 100 ones or hundred (H)

In order to write a 3-digit number, we need three places:

~ Math in Action

Objective: To understand the concept of place value.

Materials Required: Number cards from O to 9 (available in Math Kit) and

three chairs labelled as hundreds, tens and ones.

Steps:

1. Divide your class in the groups of three children each.

2. Tell the children of the first group to pick up any three number cards

and sit down on the chairs.

3. Write the number on the board.

4. Ask the children to exchange their places and form another number.

5. Write the new number on the board.

6. Instruct them to form the greatest and smallest number with their

number cards.

7. Ask them how many different numbers they made.

ttr'ttl Everytime the number should be read out loudly.

i] Fun Time

Use the place value cards from your Math Kit and paste the number for

expanded form in your Math Notebook.

: comes later while counting

is always greater. So, 523

______ is _greater than _3~5.

Rules for comparing two numbers:

1. First look at the digits in hundreds place. The numeral

with more number of hundreds is greater.

2. When the digits in hundreds place are equal, then the

numeral with more number of tens is greater.

3. When the digits in tens place are equal, then the numeral

with more number of ones is greater.

4. When all the digits are same, the numbers are equal.

Example: Compare 368 and 342.

Now, I can

compare

the numbers, --,: ,- - -- - - - - - - - - ,

. .

H T 0 Solution: Here, digits in the hundreds place are equal, that is

3 = 3. Now, compare the digits in the tens place. In the tens

place 6 is greater than 4 (6 > 4), therefore 368 is greater than 342 or 368 > 342.
