Many barriers exist to practical implementation of RRI in research
organizations.
Therefore it is crucial to encourage the modernization of
institutional practices and culture in research institutions, Higher
Education Institutions and funding agencies, to promote
Responsible Research and Innovation.

The RRI plans shall:
conduct impact assessment/audit of procedures and practices in
order to identify RRI barriers at organization level
Develop the RRI dimension in research content and programmes
Set targets and monitor progress via indicators at organization level
Expected Impact
In the long term, the action shall increase
research institutions' ability to generate
innovation that reflects societal needs.
Beyond Europe!
The proposals should include an international dimension in
particular with the following countries:
Brazil, Republic of South Africa, India, Canada, Australia, Russia,
United States of America, Japan and China.

The NUCLEUS approach defines academic organisations, such as
universities or scientific institutions, as “cells” – living organisms
with distinct individual functions, existing in specific
environments.
Each cell requires a core element or fundamental part, carrying the
central hereditary information and specific identity – the NUCLEUS.
Within the NUCLEUS project these centres of growth or
development refer to the governance of universities and scientific
institutions.
While the task of these NUCLEI is to control the cells’ growth and
reproduction, they also need to ensure the embeddedness of the
organisms into an environment that supports their development.

While some cells may exist on
their own, most cells are
stronger and more productive if
they form clusters with other
cells around them.
Together with these other cells
they can perform more
complex and larger tasks.

10 Institutionalised NUCLEI
Installed units in universities and scientific institutions, in which
scientists, policy makers, citizens and media will be invited to
inspire new methodologies and dialogue-oriented approaches
among citizens and scientists.
The NUCLEI will encourage self-reflections about how to conduct
research reflecting societal needs.
20 Mobile NUCLEI
Series of activities designed to fit into existing science
communication events.
The Mobile NUCLEI’s primary objective is to strengthen the
knowledge and engagement in RRI among local policy-makers and
academic leadership.
20 Mobile NUCLEI - Examples
A high-level workshop for university management, city, region
and/or municipality leadership, as well as NGO’s, CSO’, industry
and researchers.
A one-day workshop/training for researchers, including PhD
students, in RRI tools and consequences for 21st century
research
