NQSA (Nuclear Quality Standard Association)

A non profit association of Major Nuclear Industry

Actors created to :

Promote the application of a robust quality standard (NSQ-100)

Provide a framework for further evolutions of the standard

Set a “nuclear oriented” supplier evaluation process to further

prepare a new certification scheme

Qualify certification bodies

Our results

NQSA is a dynamic association, with already 9 full members

(industry leaders)

NSQ-100 is becoming a well-known standard (thousands of

downloads worldwide: utilities, suppliers, regulatory bodies…)

A popular website

Productive discussions with ISO: NSQ-100 is set to be the new

nuclear standard for quality management system

Take part in the redaction of the Guidelines (sharing experience

and best practices)

Development of the certification process

NSQ-100 Quality Standard for Nuclear Industry - July 2014 - p.‹#›

The method used to develop NSQ-100

Based upon ISO 9001:2008 structure : an industry consensus quality standard ensuring the integration of Nuclear QA requirements in well-known industrial quality practices

Key elements integration of two major nuclear reference codes and experience IAEA GS-R-3:2006

ASME NQA-1-2008 (18 criteria)

Experience feedback from recent constructions

Development process inspired by the approach followed in other industries, mainly Aircraft Industry (EN 9100 Quality Management Systems / Requirements for Aviation, Space and Defense Org.)

Similar context: strong safety requirements, high quality and industrial expectations combined with a product/process and low production volume orientation

Integration of specific requirements into a largely deployed standard

NSQ-100 standard:

includes detailed requirements for quality management,

applicable to a supplier of goods or services used in the

construction and maintenance of a nuclear installation,

is not intended to substitute for regulatory or contractual

requirements, but is designed to help to answer them.

Objective of the guidelines is to answer question that the

supplier may have for a correct implementation of the

NSQ-100 Standard requirements

CLASSIFICATION / GRADED APPROACH

The “PRODUCT” has to be the subject to an analysis by the

manufacturer in order to determine the importance of:

Each item on the product safety function or the product final quality,

Each activity (during design, development, manufacturing, erection,

commissioning and related services), which may affect the product

safety function or the product final quality.

To perform this analysis, it may be useful to refer to one or more of the

different type of methods as listed in EN 31010 standard (Risk

management – Risk assessment techniques).

In conclusion

The management of the quality of the supply chain is a major

challenge in the construction and maintenance of nuclear plants

Further Development

With ISO: The working group WG 4 has been created within

ISO TC 85 (Nuclear), for:

“Development of enhanced requirements for nuclear industry,

with respect to ISO 9000/17000 series, with the main objective

of conformity assessment guaranties in coherence with the

safety importance / classification”

With IAEA: One basis for updating:

GSR- Part 2 guides for suppliers
