FE 16 P2 Football Championship
Valley Rovers v Na Piarsaigh on Sunday the 31st of March 2019.
On Sunday the under 16s played Na Piarsaigh in the opening round of the P2 Football Championship at Ballygarvan. A competitive game was expected at the outset as Na Piarsaigh had played P1 Football last year and the Valleys had contested the P2 County Final. Valley Rovers played into a strong wind in the opening half but that did not hinder their first half performance. John Neary registered the first point of the game and it was followed by a superb goal from Conor Calnan. The first half continued very competitively as both sides were determined to get on top. Na Piarsaigh in between a few missed free opportunities managed to score 4 points in the first half. Prior to halftime, points courtesy of Ciarán McCarthy and Sean Egan saw Valley Rovers leading 1-4 to 0-4. Three minutes into the second half saw Na Piarsaigh score a goal that saw the sides draw level and game was on. Na Piarsaigh were in full throttle at this stage and went ahead by 2 points. Valleys introduced two forward substitutes at this stage; Cathal Brady was reintroduced after being replaced by Sean Kiely in the first half and Jason Kelleher was the second substitute. Shortly after Valleys scored a free to put only a point between the sides but Na Piarsaigh found their kicking form and added two further points making the score 1-8 to our 1-5. Jonathan Murphy undid all of Na Piarsaigh scoring spree by a much -needed goal that was followed by a point from Ciarán McCarthy. Valleys quickly added another point from a free so at the 50th minute Valley Rovers led by 2-7 to 1-8. The gloves were off now and both sides wanted the win which was evident by the pace of the match. The Valleys, however, were dealt a blow when they were reduced shortly thereafter to 14 men and everyone struggled to contain a now newly focused Na Piarsaigh who scored 3 goals and two points without reply. The final score was Na Piarsaigh 4-10 to Valley Rovers 2-7. Valley Rovers are not out however as they have a back -door match yet to be scheduled.

U11 Hurling
On Saturday morning last Valley Rovers made the trip to Coachford where they took on home side Aghabullogue in the first U11 Hurling game of the year. The Rovers had 17 players and fielded two teams on the day. With very little hurling done on the pitch prior to the game it was hard to know how the games would go but credit to the lads they played excellently. Both teams won their respective games but it was their performances that was particularly pleasing which augurs well for the year ahead. Remember to keep practicing at home! Teams on the day: Team 1: Conor McGregor, Kyle Burke, Eoghan Galgey, Liam O’Donovan, Daniel O’Donovan, Paul Cremin, Jack McCarthy (Innishannon), Daniel Holland, Jack O’Donoghue. Team 2: Mark Hurley, Matthew Humphries, Michael Croke, Charlie Lynch, Jack Le Blanc, Jack Healy, Donnacha Lynch, Tomas O’Riordan.
U10 Hurling
On Saturday, Mar 30th Valley Rovers U10’s fielded
two teams to play against Clonakilty on a beautiful
sunny afternoon. It was the first hurling match of the
year but also the first hurling match for two new
recruits Connor Dennehy & Conor O’Mahony who
featured in the full forward line on each team.
Valleys started well in both matches with the ball
moving fast up the pitch with great first time hurling.
Valleys had a grip on Clon with great tackling,
blocking & hooking skills that they practiced during
the week at training. Valleys had lots of chances but
shooting left them down on occasions but the striking
with ball in hand was brilliant. Cathal Murphy, Luke
McSweeney & Dylan Lestrange had a stranglehold on
the Clon midfield for team 1 while Aaron Broderick &
Hennessy brothers tormented the Clon team on team
2.
After a break the two teams swapped over, at this
stage Valleys started to tire and Clon established
themselves in the game. Ben Sharples at full back
played like the Rock Diarmuid O’Sullivan stemming
the tide of Clon attacks. A shrewd tactical move by
Coach Murphy saw Finan O’Brien & Darragh Murphy
move to midfield where they brought Valleys team 1
back into the game.
On team 2 Charlie Kelleher Barry & Naoise O’Connell
battled hard repelling Clon attacks while Conor Ryan
lead the forward line. The icing on the cake though
was with the final puc of the game, Conor Dennehy
doubled on a ball first time to bulge the net. Queue a
massive ovation from the crowd & Valleys players. A
promising GAA career looks likely.
Valleys are back in action next weekend in football
against Sam Maguires. Plenty practice is needed to
build on the hurling performance.
The team can be seen on this week’s cover page as
our feature photo. Well done boys.

With one minute remaining Orla O’Sullivan scored a wonderful goal after a great cross field free from Roisin O’Donovan.
After the game John Cleary the Eire Og Manager was very gracious in his words to the Valleys’ girls and wished us all the best in our semi-final against Mourneabbey. The semi-final is fixed against Mourneabbey away on Monday 8th April at 7.30pm. As All-Ireland Club Champions, Mourneabbey will be very difficult to beat however for the girls to achieve their third consecutive County final in three years would be an amazing achievement. We would appreciate all the support we could get from the club on the 8th to help the girls achieve something this club hasn’t done before. Team: Jane Mulvihill, Roisin O’Donovan, Rachel O’ Sullivan (Capt.), Carol Cremin, Grainne Dart O’Flynn, Cathy Dwyer, Sinead Dart O’Flynn, Kate Wall, Eimear Kiely (0.1), Jennifer O’Donovan, Daire Kiely (0.4), Alison Murphy (1.0), Danielle Murphy, Laoise Collins (1.0), Roisin O’Sullivan (1.4), Emma O’Donovan, Orla O’Sullivan (1.0), Aine Lynch, Katie Murphy, Sarah O’Dwyer, Cliona O’Riordan, Kim Muckian, Aoife O’Brien, Ellen Fehily, Shauna Reilly, Niamh Hurley (injured)
U21 football Championship
Valley Rovers Under 21 Footballers had a tremendous
win over Eire Og in the quarter final of the 21A football
championship on 21st March 2019. Having won the
County 21C & B championships in 2017 and 2018,
competing in the A Grade is a big step up. Having drawn
last year’s finalist Eire Og at home in ovens added to this
challenge. The first 15 minutes was very even with both
teams playing good football. Roisin O’Sullivan was
excellent in the corner taking on the ball at all times.
With goals from Roisin O’Sullivan and Laoise Collins,
Valleys led by 2.3 to 0.3 at half time.
In the second half the game was very even with Valleys
holding on to the half time lead for the first 15 minutes.
Eire Og then struck for two quick goals to reduce the lead
to one point with five minutes to go. Valleys then scored
a great goal by Alison Murphy where she lobbed the
keeper. She later claimed it was intentional however this
is quite debatable!

Ladies Football Division 2 League Valley Rovers travelled to West Cork on Sunday morning 31st March to play Bantry in the second round of the Division 2 league. The match was played in St Colms Grounds in Kealkill. Having regraded from Senior Football to Intermediate, Bantry are a formidable side and demonstrated this with some excellent football. Valleys forwards, in particular Michelle O’Regan, were a constant threat to the Bantry goal in the first half. Things didn’t always go Valleys’ way with the crossbar being rattled on two occasions. Half-way through the first half Bantry began to get on top and with two goals before half-time led 1.6 to 3.6 at the break. With 13 of the starting 15 under 21, this was exactly the type of game Valleys needed before next week’s County 21A semi-final. At the start of the second half Bantry pulled ahead again and led by nine points at one stage. Valleys never gave up and gradually clawed their way back into the game. A point from Eimear Kiely plus a great goal from Michelle O’Regan where she showed great awareness and courage to palm the ball to the net brought Valleys back into the game. When Michelle was brought down for a penalty she calmly slotted it away to the top right-hand corner. Two more points from frees by Michelle had Bantry leading by one point with time up. Valleys kept on pressing and deep into injury time a long sideline kick was well won by Alison Murphy in the square who passed to Jennifer Murphy who shot to goal along the ground. It passed 20 bodies on the way to the net to give Valleys a one point lead. The referee played another minute of injury time by which time Bantry worked the ball up the field only to be denied a goal by an amazing save by Jane Mulvihill. It’s still early in the season and nothing is won in March however the spirit and determination shown by such a young group of footballers is great to see and hopefully it will lead to success later in the year. Team:
Jane Mulvihill, Carol Cremin, Rachel O’Sullivan, Sarah O’Dwyer,
Roisin O’Donovan, Cathy Dwyer, Jennifer Murphy (1.0), Kate Wall, Grainne Dart O’Flynn,
Alison Murphy, Eimear Kiely (0.1), Sinead Dart O’Flynn, Roisin O’Sullivan (0.1, Daire Kiely (0.1), Michelle
O’Regan (3.6),
Subs: Kate Bernard, Emily Palmer
U16 Ladies Football The U16 Ladies football team kicked off their season with a challenge game against Clonakilty last Sunday evening. The game was used as opportunity to get the girls back playing in a match situation as they have not had a game in the last 4 months since they won the U15 League title.
The game was a high scoring game with Valleys coming out the wrong side of a 6-8 to 6-4 score-line but hopefully the game will blow the cobwebs away for the League Campaign ahead. There were 19 players available Sunday and all got at least 45 mins each and there were encouraging performances across the team. There is a squad of 25 players this year with a fairly even split of U15 & U16 girls so the challenge this year will be to integrate the squad and give as much game time as possible for full squad over the coming months.
Valley scorers were: Aisling O’Donovan 2-0, Lucy Callanan 2-0, Ellen Murphy 0-1, Ciara Taheny 2-0, Laoise Collins 0-1, Cora Higgins 0-1, Ellie O’Sullivan 0-1.
U10 Football The U10 Girls footballers at the end of 6 weeks of playing basketball in Scoil Eoin NS Sports Hall. The girls showed great enthusiasm and skills during the 6 weeks with over 40 girls participating and registering for 2019. We are returning to the pitch in the bleach for Football training this Wednesday 3rd April from 6pm to 7pm and this will be our weekly slot for the year going forward.

Minor Camogie League
Last Saturday Valley Rovers Minor Camogie team
welcomed Grenagh to Brinny for their second league
game of the year. This game turned out to be a game of
two halves with Valley Rovers having the better of the
first half and Grenagh having the better of the second.
The Rovers scored 3 goals in the first half, two from
Cliona Reardon and one from Claire Flynn. Molly Lynch,
taking over the free taking duties in the absence of our
regular free taker showing admirable accuracy, Valleys
were well worth their 8 point interval lead.
The second half belonged to Grenagh on the scoreboard
as they began to chip away at the lead and 3 minutes
from time took the lead for the first time and held out
for a one point victory. While this was a disappointing
result for the Girls there are lots of positives to be taken
from the game against a strong Grenagh outfit. Team:
Grace O’Dwyer,
Hannah Morrissey, Rachel Lordon,
Aine Lynch, Laoise Collins, Ellen Fehily,
Molly Lynch, Kim Muckian,
Claire Flynn, Cliona Reardon, Emily Barry
Kate Lynch, Grace Geary.
Subs: Sinead McCarthy & Fiona Horgan.
