Halloween Party

A chara,
This has been a relatively long term but the weeks have just flown past since we
opened on 25th August. It has been such a busy term! In addition to settling into new
teaching jobs, the staff of Coláiste De Lacy have been setting up the building, cleaning,
resourcing classrooms, developing their teaching, integrating iPads into teaching and
learning, engaging with subject planning and preparations...etc. The list is endless.
However, most importantly, they have been supporting and building relationships
with our daltaí and each other. I could not be more proud of our little school
community! Our ethos and values are already engrained in our culture and daily
practices.
We absolutely could not have achieved so much in such little time, were it not for the
support and assistance of our parents. I hope that you all have a lovely midterm break
and enjoy some hazy Autumn sunshine.
Looking forward to another busy term of great fun and learning.
Best wishes,
Iníon Corrigan

French & Art Art:
To date in art we have been exploring portraiture and the concept of the
'selfie' as a contemporary form of the portrait. In doing this, we looked at
artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and Julian Opie who both deal with basic
line and shape in creating the face. We learned about the proportions of
the face and how to draw the face from observation. In culminating our
learning the pupils designed and made a record sleeve with their selfie on
the front, each with their own individual twist.
French:
From eating croissants to speaking about croissants, the students of
French in Coláiste De Lacy have come a long way in the last few weeks.
The pupils have learned how to converse with one another in beautiful
French accents and have developed a understanding of some basic
French grammar. In doing this, they have broadened heir knowledge of
what contemporary French culture is like through researching things such
as pop songs and making posters with emoji's. In the final week before
the Halloween break the pupils wrote and performed a short French
scene entitled '#frenchculchies' where they dressed up and dramatically
used their French to the best of their ability!

Spanish
English Already this year in English class we have gotten the chance to write our own poetry. Pictured here
is an example of a metaphor poem we have written called “What is the moon?” Using this poem
we also created a digital or moving poem version on our iPads with music and images. We also got
to learn loads of other writing techniques, for example alliteration which is ‘always amazing’ and
also onomatopoeia! Boom!!
We got to write our very own short stories and even came up with some interesting open lines to
books we might write and the creation of characters for the book also! Some were so good I think
we might have the very next J. K. Rowling among us!! We got to study loads of chapters from fan-
tasy and adventure books and learned all about a
theory called “The Hero with a Thousand Faces”
which shows that most hero’s in a book go through
a similar journey. Finally we also got the chance to
do a bit of film study looking at a Halloween movie
called “Labyrinth”.
The students have been learning basic introductions in Spanish and have practiced greetings,
asking/answering their names and asking/answering ‘how are you’ in conversations with each other.
They learned the days of the week and months of the year and made the posters to help them
remember and these will be displayed in the seomra. They have also learned to count to 31 and so
putting it all together, they can say today's date, the date different events happen e.g. Halloween,
and the date of their birthday. Finally they learned the colours and played some fun games finding
things in the room that match the colour being called out.
Have a great Halloween Break, from Iníon Ó Flanagan

Sport’s Update Equestrian The equestrian team made history on Sunday the 19th of October when they participated in the Killossery Lodge Secondary schools competition. This was the first sporting event that the school has participated in and was a very joyous occasion. Katherine Duffy, Sean Watson and Emma Bruton all performed excellently. The equestrian team will be competing again in November. A big thanks to the students and their parents for making this great day possible. GAA / Athletics Training has commenced for all GAA teams and Athletics teams. The turnout and participation is excellent. Training is on Thursday evening from 2.45-3.45pm and new members are always welcome. Soccer The school will be competing in its first soccer tournament on the 27th of November. The FAI have also given the school an allocation of reduced price tickets for Ireland vs. USA on the 18th of November. Students interested in attending should speak to Máistir Hogan or Máistir O’Sullivan. There will also be a cost for the bus. Basketball The school have entered in the North Leinster basketball league and are waiting for communication from Basketball Ireland regarding competitions.

As the sound of music and singing filled the function room of the Pillo Hotel on
Monday 6th October 2014, it was hard to believe that Coláiste De Lacy has only been
open a mere six weeks.
The school held their information evening in style for parents of sixth class pupils
considering enrolment for the next academic year. Such was the crowd that extra
seats had to be drafted in as attendance was double that anticipated.
The evening began with the choirs beautiful rendition of Coldplay’s “Fix You”
accompanied by talented students Aoife O’Meara and Leon McGuinness on acoustic
guitar. First year student, Matthew Joyce then took to the podium to deliver an
outstanding warm welcome to the crowd that had gathered and also to outline the
evening’s proceedings.
Ms. Corrigan, the Principal delivered a comprehensive presentation on the ethos,
curriculum and the enrolment process for Coláiste de Lacy.
It was endearing and enlightening to hear students Alana Moore, Aoife O’Meara and
Onora Finn speak of their personal experiences to date. Alana talked of the schools
use of Ipads which “makes learning more fun” and finished by saying “All in all I have
really enjoyed the last six weeks, and I hope that my next six years are filled with as
much fun.”
Yvonne Finn, mother to one of the first year students then gave her insight into a
parent’s experience of a new school to date.
One of the highlights, which was introduced by Niamh Boshell-Scanlon, was the
viewing of a short movie created, edited and produced entirely by the students
themselves which the audience thoroughly enjoyed and many commented afterwards
on how happy the students looked in the movie.
The presentation was rounded off by two upbeat and energetic songs by the choir,
one of which was sang through Irish.
After the presentation formally concluded Ms. Corrigan, the Principal, stayed behind
and opened the floor to answer questions about the school and the enrolment process
from enthusiastic parents.
Enrolment closed on Wednesday 22nd October 2014. Offers will be posted soon.
