Cround Improvements. These have not been so extensive as in previous years,

your Council deeming it advisable to defer making furtherpermanent improvements pending a settlement of our exten-sion scheme, and it is hoped that the Acclimatisation Groundswill be secured at an early date.

Cregory Terrace Property.Your Council having the money in hand after the Show

considered it desirable to pay the balance due, and this wascompleted and the Title Deeds secured. At present the pro-perty is let at a nominal rental, the tenant undertaking allthe repairs at his own cost.

Grand Stand. This has proved its worth many times over, and has been

fully made use of in connection with the Show, the Besses o'the Barn Concerts, International Football and other importantevents, thet total revenue being £421 6s. Id., as against£;706 18s. 2d. in 19g9. The revenue for admissions to theold stand amounted to £,144, as against £247 6s. in 199.

Visits to Shows.During the year 29 Shows have been visited by members

of the Council and its officers, being the same number as in1909, viz. :-Bangalow, Beaudesert, Beenleigh, Boonah, Bun-daberg, Cairns, Glen Innes, Goondiwindi, Gympie, Ipswich,Ipswich Chamber of Commerce, Kinga roy, Lockyer, Lowood,Lismore, Maryborough, Melbourne, Norti Pine, Pittsworth,Pomona, Rockhampton, Roma, Rosewood, Stanthorpe, Syd-ney, Tenterfield, Toowoomba, Wellington Point, and Warwick. The Roma Show was opened by our Chairman, Mr. John Mac-donald.

Distriot Exhibits and One Farm Exhibits. It is much to be regretted that the continuity of the Dis-

trict Exhibits this year has been broken in consequence of noentries being received, therefore the C'helmsford Shield Com-petition was not held, but in lieu of the District Exhibits a One

The Prize Money originally offered for the One Farm Ex-hibits was Io£100, but it proved so great a success that yourCouncil unhesitatingly increased it to £220.

Covernment Exhibits. The Queensland Government again fully availed them-

selves of the space at their disposal for Government Exhibits. The Agricultural Department, Educational Departiment, Rail-way Department, and Forestry Department each took part, and made a magnificent show, which was highly appreciated.

Railways. The Queensland Railway Commissioner and General

Traffic Manager, as usual, provided reduced fares and amplerolling stock, which all tended to ensure a record attendance, while the New South Wales Railway Commissioners ran specialtrains at specially low fares from Sydney and interveningstations, also from Grafton and Lismore and intervening sta-tions to Murwillumbah, which were largely used.

Exhibits. The Horses, Cattle, Wine, and Canine Exhibits are

pecially dealt with in this Report by experts, and no doubt aperusal of same will interest all concerned. The other sec-tions were fully equal to any previous year, and the Farm andDairy Section was a great improvement on any Show pre-'iously held. The Horticultural Section, which was underthe management of the Secretary of the Horticultural Society

f Queensland. proved the finest display of flowers ever heldin connection with a National Agricultural Show.

International Show.A conference was called in Melbourne for 2nd Novem-

Ier by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria for theivurpose of considering the advisability o'f holding an Interna-tional or Inter-state Show. Messrs. E. Baynes, John Reid, and the Secretary attended on behalf of Queensland, the otherStates being represented by :-

New South Wales.-Sir Francis Sutton, Messrs. S. E. Lees,Henry Dawson, and H. M. Somer (Secretary).

Western Australia.-Sir John Forrest, Messrs. SydneyStubbs and Isidore Emmanuel.

Tasman'a.-Mr. C. E. Davis.South Australia.-Messrs. H. Denton and J. W. Sandford.Victoria.-Messrs. A. McCracken, H. A. Currie, C. E.

Merritt, and T. Patterson (Secretary). The Minutes of the meeting were forwarded to each of the

Societies represented, and it appears to be the unanimousfeeling that affairs should remain as they are at present, it notbeing considered advisable to undertake an InternationalShow or an Interstate one.

Acclimatisation Society. It is pleasing to repolrt that tins matter has now about

reached finality. During thle last twn days of the State Par-lhament a Bill was inltroduced by the Premier to resumepossession of the Acclimatisation (irounds, and the secondreading was carried by a vote (if 50 to 13. The Bill, however, was carried no further, as an arrangement was come to bywll1crl te Acclimatisation Society handed over their land tothe (Government on the following understanding :-That fiveacres be retained by that Society for a term pending otherarrangements being made for a suitable site; that six (6)acres be leased for a term of five \years to the National Agri-cultural and Industrial Association for show purposes at anannual rental of -15o per annum, the balance of the landto be used as a Public Park. Our thanks are due to thePremier for his action in forcing some finality to this long-drawn-out dispute. Our Association will now be able to makenecessary imnrovements on this land, and although theremay be a dlifference of opinion on the question of our beingasked to pay rental, still it is satisfactory to know that theland will be made properly available for our use.

Death of Lleut.-Colonel Irving. It is with much regret we have to report the death of one

of the oldest members of the As'ociation, Lieut.-Col. Irving, who) for over 30o years has been associated with us. [)Duringhis term of office he has filled the position of Vice-Presidenton several occasions, and Honorary Veterinary Surgeon dur-ing the whole of his term of office. His loss will be greatlyfelt, Iboth by ourselves and exhilbitors, but the good work tlatthe Colonel has done for this Association for so many yearswill stand as a lasting monument to the keenness and enthu-siasm he so ably displayed.

Schedule and Catalogue. This year was obtained by Messrs. Diddams and Coy.

for £40.

Railway Fares to Show.Representation was made by your Committee to the

Railway Commissioner with tne view of charging the samelow fares for the three last days of the week as was chargedin Jubilee Year for the second week, but without success. Wehope the comingr year to attain this object. It will un-doubtedly prove beneficial to the State and remunerative tothis Association.

Photographs of Show Grounds.Framed photographs of the Show Grounds have been for-

warded, with the compliments of your Committee, to theRoyal Agricultural Societies, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth. In reply, Sydney and Perth have returned oneeach of their Grounds, and Melbourne has advised that onewill be forwarded in the near future.

Bar Privileges this year realised £508.

Use off Grounds. The Grounds have been used, outside of the Show, by the

Besses o' the Barn for six performances, Queensland RugbyUnion for their International and Interstate fixtures, and theQueensland Rugby League for their International and Inter-state fixtures, also for the ordinary local cricket and lacrossematches. Free use of the Grounds was granted to the Hos-pital for their Snorts, 24 th September.

Presentation to the Chairman.A framed photograph of the Council of Jubilee Year was

presented to the Chairman as a token of esteem.

Reciprooity of Members' Tiokets. It is pleasing to find that this concession is being more

largely availed of, both in Sydney and Brisbane. At theSydney Easter Show a very large number of the Nationaltickets were used, while at the August National Show, notquite so manv. but a large number were used by members ofthe Royal Agricultural Society of Sydney.

Offioe-Bearers.Messrs. J. Macdonald (Chairman) and J. A. Hayes (Hon.

Treasurer) were this year elected for the tenth consecutivetime to their respective positions.

Finanoe Committee. The Finance Committee consists of Messrs. Macdonald,

Affleck, Fauset, Hayes, and Hiron.

The Dog Section.By C. COURT RICE.

Perhaps regarding the dog section of the National Apri-cultural and Industrial As:ociation's ,reat annual Show,no one, outside the olhcials of the Association is so qualifiedto write as one who has been honoured, as has tile writer,by being appointed judge of the section referred to, on noless than nine occasions since 1898.

Relative to the decrease or increase of canine entriesduring that period, comparison is by no means easy, moreparticularly as a few year agn the Association found itexpedient to materially increase the entry fees for the Sec-tion. That the prizes were doubled at thle same time was afact wich Protestants preferred t, ignore and I have alwaysbeen led to understandl that the lower prizes and lower feeswere better appreciated. Nevertheless it is quite certainthat the smaller tile prize, no matter what tlhe fee, the smallerwill the entry from distant dog owners be. At all events thiswant of appreciation of better prizes slhows thle popularityof the National Shows that the number of entries has beenmaintained if not slightly increaseld.

)u;rmg tlie years in which I have judged, several im-provements have taken place, chief of which, the old bench-ing was relplaced by new. From a ldog fancier's point ofview, and more especially from a judge's, tihe inaugurationby Mr. Ilironi in. I think, l(o6 of thle "one dog, one numler"system of numblerinig was a very lecid ed mlo \e in the rightdirection, for it not only facilitated judging but assists inavoiding errors and confusion. In the ('Council Steward forthe Kennel Section, :r. J. ilirn l, tih Association ihas the ser-vices of a ciompetent oflcial who ias a grasp of his sulbject.

Having alluded to the new ibenching, it may be as wellto point out, and with an intiiate association with dog showsin Great Britain and Austraiasia extending over a period ofupward of a quarter of a century I can speak with someauthority, that rermanently fixed benching and divisions arenot conducive to that easy and effective cleansing so neces-sary at dog shows, and if, as I understand it contemplates, the National Association can see its way to erect benchingwhich can be taken down and disinfected after each Show,it will set an example to s'milar societies in the Common-wealth. It is not, however, suggested that such descriptionsof benching and divisions is unknown, at similar exhibitions,

but adequate disinfection certainly is. Irhe question ofolind, whether of wood or sheet-iron, or wire-work divisionswill also, I believe, exercise thle minds of the Council, but solong as absolute clealinellss is asurl it niiattrs little ofwhat suchi dliiins are made. Page 61: ^Nti Agricultural Associatian of · South Wales, and Lady Chelmsford, who have in previous years so endeared themselves to our members and the people of Queensland. It is with great

remarkable ,iat the two States which stand right out .nGreyhounds, viz., Queensland and Tasmania, are alike in the'rregard,' or want of regard, for the so-called National breed.Yet Greyhounds and Bulldogs were once crossed together,to give the former pluck and stamina.

Bull-terriers make no progress in numbers, and I do notthink, the quality is so good. Yet this is a most suitabledog for this country and I am hopeful will sooner or laterreceive the encouragement he deserves.

Followinp the example of its neighbouring State, Queens-land has retreated with its number of collie exhibits, but, unlike New South Wales, the quality is improving. A fewdogs at the IOo Exhibition compare most favourably withthe best seen a decade earlier, but so far as number is con-cerned, I do not think the breed will ever regain its formerposition in Australia.

The growing popularity of Cattle dogs at Shows inQueensland, aiind the advent of the Kelpie at the "National,"are features which should give much pleasure to the Associa-tion as the two bree(ls named are part and parcel of anagricultural show, which is more than can be said of manyother classes of dogs, not to menltion lap-dogs an(l purelyfancy breeds. For many years past, I have, through the pressand elsewhere, very strongly aldvocated the claims of Cattle-dogs ;and Kelpies to be put upon a higher plane to other clogsat agricultural shows, by better premiums being given forcompetition. So far, my efforts have been unavailing, but i;would give me much pleasure to know that so go-ahead anAssociation as the " National " had set the necessary exam-ple and in one or another reciognised the superior claim toencouragement by the varieties referred to.

Scottish-terriers, whilst fast disappearing from our Shows, elsewhere seem to be gaining ground in Queensland, as isevidenced by the Shows of 1899 (6 entries), 19o2 (9), 190o6(lo), 1910 (22), wlhich latter formed for tle breed yet an-other record(l at the " National." The only set-back appearsto have been in 19o09, when, for some reason or other, butfour entries were nmade.

Irish Terriers, too, in 1o09 and 1910 showed a markedincrease in numbers over any previous Show hleld by the Asso-ciation, and this is very marked in comnparison with the 1899Exhibition, wheni thie entry was only seven. The quality, also, is fairly well maintained, and would perhaps be moreapparent if exhibitors of Irish Terriers in Queensland took thetrouble to put their dogs down in less unkempt condition.

In comformity with what is occurring all over Austra-lasia, certain breeds at the National Association's Shows arefast going or gone. It is safe to prophes that such as St.Bernards, Mastiffs, Great Danes, Newfoundlands, etc., are in

Page 62: ^Nti Agricultural Associatian of · South Wales, and Lady Chelmsford, who have in previous years so endeared themselves to our members and the people of Queensland. It is with great

such condition and will not return. Dalmatians, once fairlystrong (in1 8~q the one class provided induced seven entries)are in similar plight, but other breeds have taken theirplaces. For instance, in 1 89 there were no Deerh~ounds, n-dced i t was not u ntil 1904q that this m ch-to-be-en cou ragedbreedl a ppeared at the '' National,'' and on that occasion buttwo entries were ma~e. Now, there are always eight- orniie igh-class specimens exhiited. In numbers, Pugshae rem~ined stationary, in qality, thaks to the advent ofsomne high-grae ~lacks, tey have imiproved and are likelyto (10l so still ore.
