Summer 2012

Do you ever wonder if your gift really makes a difference? All of us do. AtSt. Vincent’s, we have counted on the community for nearly 100 years.

Men and women who first served as our hospital’s advisors in the early1900s, all the way to our present day leadership, know that St. Vincent’sprovides safe, compassionate care above all else for our patients. Quality andexcellence for our community is expected! And at St. Vincent’s, that care alsoextends to the poor and underserved.

Gifts of all sizes make this happen. All gifts are appreciated, and whencombined together, the outpouring accomplishes big things and meets thegreat needs of the children, families, men and women who come to St. Vincent’s for care.

Many donors’ gifts are given to meet the needs of our mission. Withthese gifts, we provide safer care through technology; mobile care to poorchildren; compassionate care for the elderly; and hope-filled care for thevery sick. When you give to St. Vincent’s Foundation’s annual fund, you canbe assured that your gift makes a difference.

We invite you to take a tour with us of St. Vincent’s Riverside, St. Vincent’sSouthside or St. Catherine Labouré Manor and let us show you first-hand whatyour gifts, large or small, have accomplished. Thank you for your generosity.

Our surgeons know that as we age, mobility is the single most importantfunction of good health because it strengthens our muscles, heart, and lungs. Our orthopedicteam works hand-in-hand with each patient to help them regain mobility and alleviate theirpain, returning them to the life they love. St. Vincent’s orthopedic surgeons and the entire SNUteam have shown a dedication to quality and patient satisfaction that will continue to make St. Vincent’s the number one choice for orthopedic care.

JuJu and Jack McCormack

St. Vincent’s Foundation has received a grant from the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, Federal Association, U.S.A. tofund a reading program and three small libraries at St. Catherine Labouré Manor. Named The Order of Malta’s

Knightly News Reading Room—In Memory of Jack McCormack, this gift will bring the joy of books, stories, news andcurrent events to residents, visitors, volunteers and staff.

In September 2011, St. Vincent’s HealthCare and the Jacksonville Region of the Order of Malta lost a beloved memberof their family, John H. “Jack” McCormack. Jack perform amazing civic work throughout his life, including serving aschairman of St. Vincent’s Medical Center Lay Advisory Board. But it was his quiet, personal volunteering that spoke to thehearts of those who knew him. With a marvelous generosity of spirit, Jack took it upon himself to volunteer at St. CatherineLabouré Manor where he hosted “News with Jack,” reading articles from the day’s newspaper to the residents. Going asoften as his schedule allowed, Jack would read out loud about current events, business news and world affairs. After he readeach article, he would encourage feedback from the residents, creating lively discussions and great camaraderie. Then, muchto the delight of his audience, Jack would end his session by reading everyone’s horoscopes, giving them all a good laugh.

When Jack had to retire from reading to residents,he left a void at St. Catherine Labouré Manor. St. Vincent’s Foundation, along with the JacksonvilleRegion of the Order of Malta, wishes to continue hislegacy by creating a library and reading program in hismemory at St. Catherine Labouré Manor. The Order ofMalta Knightly News Reading Room—In Memory ofJack McCormack will expand Jack’s ministry for thesick, the poor and the elderly by generating an ongoingvolunteer schedule for reading to residents, as well ascreating three new libraries, complete with hundreds ofbooks as well as books-on-CD, in existing alcoveslocated throughout St. Catherine Labouré Manor.

A Grant from the Order of Malta Honors Jack McCormack’s Legacy

On June 2, St. Vincent’s HealthCare, Jacksonville Farmers Market and Beaver Street Fisheries hosted the first St. Vincent’s Summer Fun & Wellness Festival at the Farmers Market. This community-wide event attracted 10,000

people and promoted healthy eating, illness prevention, nutrition education and wellness. The Festival also promoted theavailability, accessibility, and nutritional benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables sold at the Jacksonville Farmers Marketevery day.

Not having access to healthy eating choices can lead to obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Knowing that theseconditions are on the rise, St. Vincent’s used the Summer Fun & Wellness Festival to help address this health crisis. It is apart of St. Vincent’s mission to reach out to the community, as we have been doing for many years through ourCommunity Health Outreach Programs, diabetes education classes,HealthTeacher, Way To Go Kids and Way To Go Families.

The Summer Fun & Wellness Festival lived up to its name by offering funactivities that included a bounce house, story time, Clifford the Big Red Dog,clowns and face painting for children. Live entertainment and cookingdemonstrations from local chefs were offered throughout the day. ChefJonathon Smith from St. Vincent’s Riverside and Chef Ed Gregorio from St. Vincent’s Southside were among the local chefs who provided cookingdemonstrations and, best of all, samples! St. Vincent’s Mobile Health OutreachProgram also provided free health screenings.

If you weren’t able to attend this event, then join us for our Fall Fun & Wellness Festival on October 20 from 10am–2pm at the Jacksonville Farmers Market!
