First-time Oscar nomi-nee Scarlett Johansson achieved a rare feat on Monday when she was nominated for two acting honors, which will be doled out at the 92nd Academy Awards next month.
The actress received a lead actress nod for her heartbreaking portrayal of a woman whose mar-riage falls apart in Noah Baumbachâs drama âMarriage Storyâ and a supporting actress nomi-nation as a German mother secretly working against Hitlerâs Nazi regime during WWII in Taika Waititiâs quirky comedy âJojo Rabbit.â
Johansson is hardly the first actor to be rec-ognized in dual acting categories in a single year, though the double nomination in that field hasnât occurred since Cate Blanchett was rec-ognized for the 2007 films âElizabeth: The Golden Ageâ and âIâm Not There.â Itâs also fairly common to see multi-hyphenates receive mul-tiple nominations across categories such as direct-ing, writing, producing and other technical fields if they take on multiple roles in an exemplary production.
No one, however, has won both lead and sup-porting actor accolades in a single year. An acad-emy rule also bars multi-ple nominations for the same performance, which came about after âGoing My Wayâ actor Barry Fitzgerald was nominated for both lead actor and supporting actor. (He won the sup-porting actor prize for his performance as a priest opposite Bing Crosby in the 1944 film; then the rule was
changed.)Unlike with the Gold-
en Globes and BAFTAs, motion picture academy rules also stipulate that a performer cannot be nominated twice in the same category in the same year (i.e., Johans-son could not have been nominated for lead actress for both âMar-riage Storyâ and âJojo Rabbit,â or Brad Pitt could not have been nominated for lead actor this year for both âAd Astraâ and âOnce Upon a Time ⊠in Hollywoodâ). If the same actor gets enough votes to have two performances nominat-ed in the same category, the performance with fewer votes is disquali-fied.
Hereâs a list of those who also have achieved dual acting nominations for films that came out in the same year, with an asterisk noting a win.
1938: Fay Bainter for âWhite Bannersâ and âJezebelâ*
1942: Teresa Wright for âThe Pride of the Yan-keesâ and âMrs. Mini-verâ*
1944: Barry Fitzgerald for âGoing My Wayâ
1982: Jessica Lange for âFrancesâ and âTootsieâ*
1988: Sigourney Weav-er for âGorillas in the Mistâ and âWorking Girlâ
1992: Al Pacino for âScent of a Womanâ* and âGlengarry Glen Rossâ
1993: Holly Hunter for âThe Pianoâ* and âThe Firmâ
1993: Emma Thomp-son for âThe Remains of the Dayâ and âIn the Name of the Fatherâ
2002: Julianne Moore for âFar From Heavenâ and âThe Hoursâ
2004: Jamie Foxx for âRayâ* and âCollateralâ
2007: Cate Blanchett for âElizabeth: The Gold-en Ageâ and âIâm Not Thereâ

âJokerâ tops this yearâs Oscar nominations, with â1917,â âIrishman,â âOnce Upon a Timeâ

LOS ANGELES â An awards sea-son that had been short on clarity and long on surprises came into focus Monday morning as the nomi-nations for the 92nd Academy Awards were announced, with nine films representing a wide range of genres earning best picture nods and the dark comic-book smash âJokerâ leading the field with 11 nomina-tions.
Following closely behind with 10 nominations apiece, including best picture, are the World War I epic â1917,â Quentin Tarantinoâs 1960s fantasia âOnce Upon a Time ⊠in Hollywoodâ and Martin Scorseseâs gangster epic âThe Irishman.â Along with âJoker,â the other nominees for best picture are âFord v Ferrari,â âJojo Rabbit,â âLittle Women,â âMar-riage Storyâ and âParasite,â the latter of which became the first South Korean film to earn a nod for the academyâs top prize.
Nominees for director are Scors-ese, Todd Phillips (âJokerâ), Sam Mendes (â1917â), Tarantino and Bong Joon Ho (âParasiteâ). It was a shutout for female directors, with potential nominees including Greta Gerwig (âLittle Womenâ), Lulu Wang (âThe Farewellâ) and Marielle Heller (âA Beautiful Day in the Neighbor-hoodâ) failing to make the cut.
In the fiercely competitive lead actor category, Antonio Banderas (âPain and Gloryâ), Leonardo DiCaprio (âOnce Upon a Timeâ), Adam Driver (âMarriage Storyâ), Joaquin Phoenix (âJokerâ) and Jona-than Pryce (âThe Two Popesâ) all scored nominations.
Nominees for lead actress are Cyn-thia Erivo (âHarrietâ), Scarlett Johan-sson (âMarriage Storyâ), Soairse Ronan (âLittle Womenâ), Charlize Theron (âBombshellâ) and RenĂ©e Zellweger (âJudyâ).
The supporting actress nominees are Kathy Bates (âRichard Jewellâ), Laura Dern (âMarriage Storyâ), Scar-lett Johansson (âJojo Rabbitâ), Flor-ence Pugh (âLittle Womenâ) and Margot Robbie (âBombshellâ). In one of the morningâs notable snubs, Jennifer Lopez, who had been con-sidered a strong contender for her performance in âHustlers,â failed to earn a nod.
Johanssonâs nominations for lead and supporting actress, which are her first Oscar nominations, make her only the 12th performer to earn double nominations for acting in a single year. (The last performer to achieve it was Cate Blanchett in 2007.)
The supporting actor nominees are Tom Hanks (âA Beautiful Day in the Neighborhoodâ), Anthony Hop-kins (âThe Two Popesâ), Al Pacino (âThe Irishmanâ), Joe Pesci (âThe Irishmanâ) and Brad Pitt (âOnce Upon a Timeâ).
On the diversity front, the acade-my narrowly avoided a reprise of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy that had dogged it in recent years. But only by a single nomination. With Lopez left off the list, along with such other contenders as âThe Farewellâ star Awkwafina and âUsâ star Lupita Nyongâo and âJust Mercyâ support-ing actor Jamie Foxx, Erivo was the only person of color among this yearâs acting nominees.
Netflix made a strong showing with 24 nominations, the most of any
studio. But although the streaming giant has made steady gains in its pursuit of Oscar glory â last year it earned 15 nominations, and in 2018 it earned eight â it remains to be seen whether it can go the distance and take home the best picture tro-phy it has long coveted. At this yearâs Golden Globes, Netflix managed to convert its 17 film nominations into just a single win.
Nominees for international feature are âCorpus Christiâ (Poland), âHon-eylandâ (North Macedonia), âLes MisĂ©rablesâ (France), âPain and Gloryâ (Spain) and âParasiteâ (South Korea). Mati Diopâs supernatural romance âAtlantics,â which Netflix acquired for release out of the Cannes Film Festival, was among the most notable snubs after it cracked the categoryâs 10-film shortlist of potential nominees.
On the nonfiction side, the nomi-nees for documentary feature are âAmerican Factory,â âThe Cave,â âThe Edge of Democracy,â âFor Samaâ and âHoneyland.â The acade-myâs documentary branch has a well-documented history of snub-bing commercial successes, and this yearâs box office hit âApollo 11â â like last yearâs âWonât You Be My Neighbor?â â failed to earn a nod.
The animation category delivered another unexpected snub, with the juggernaut sequel âFrozen 2,â which recently became the highest-grossing animated film of all time worldwide, failing to earn a nomination. The nominees are âHow to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,â âI Lost My Body,â âKlaus,â âMissing Linkâ and âToy Story 4.â

Filmmakers promise new info on Zodiac Killer case
By ChuCk BarNey

PASADENA, Calif. â What more is to be said about the Zodiac Kill-er? The serial murderer who terror-ized the Bay Area in the late 1960s has been the subject of numerous
films, books and TV shows. And now an upcoming docu-
mentary series on FX is promising fresh information connected to the legendary cold case.
âOh, yeah, we definitely found stuff out that nobody knew,â says Ross Dinerstein, executive produc-er of âThe Most Dangerous Animal of All.â â ⊠We connected some dots that people never connected before. A lot of new stuff will be revealed.â
âThe Most Dangerous Animal of Allâ is a four-part series based on the 2014 book by Gary Stewart. It explores Stewartâs obsessive search for the biological parents who abandoned him as a child and how he came to believe that his father â Earl Van Best â was the Zodiac Killer. The series debuts on FX and Hulu in March.
Dinerstein and director Kief Davidson appeared in a panel dis-cussion at the Television Critics Association press tour to promote their documentary. To avoid spoil-ers, the filmmakers didnât go into details. But they revealed that much of their new information is connected to how investigators handled â or mishandled â the
case.âPart of the reason why the Zodi-
ac case was not solved was due to a lead detectiveâs obsession,â David-son said. âI canât reveal too much more because, actually, thereâs an element in the Zodiac case thatâs really not been talked about before that we uncovered and got people to talk about how that explains why it wasnât solved in the 1970s.â
Davidson went went on to say that there existed a âculture within the (San Francisco) police depart-ment that you donât talk, you donât rat out your fellow officers. I wouldnât go as far to say that there was a cover up, per se, but there is certainly information that these former detectives were not talking about that I ultimately did get them to talk about.â
Davidson, who says he isnât a true-crime buff, says he prepared for the project by immersing him-self in previous Zodiac-related doc-umentaries and came away unim-pressed.
âI found that, by and large, they were all very sensational, rehashing stories that have just been told over and over and over again,â he said. âThey just didnât do their own deep dive. They didnât do the work.â
