A Brief History of Wakefield Park

The Wakefield Park circuit was built by Paul Samuels and John Carter and was opened officially by

John Fahey, the then NSW Premier and member for the Goulburn district in November 1994.

It was built with club motor sport firmly in mind and with the control tower and paddock facilities and carports it made some of our existing circuits look a bit out dated. Track days and supersprints were the usual events with race days for cars, motor bikes and go karts also becoming popular at

the circuit.

At 2.2 kilometres, with an reasonable length straight leading to a section of uphill bends with the loop at the top of the hill and then a downhill run into what became known as the fish hook section and a negatively banked last turn onto the main straight the circuit offered quite a challenge to

achieve a quick lap.

In 2000 the circuit changed hands for the first time with Rob Hodgkinson and Paul Phillips taking over. Soon after the change over the circuit was re-profiled with changes to the fish hook area and the final turn onto the main straight. Both of these changes improved the flow of the circuit, the

fish hook area in particular allowing for a faster run onto the back straight.

Under the new ownership the Wakefield Park licensing and permit system was introduced. This gave clubs a cheaper alternative to CAMS for the running of events and members could also pur-chase a Wakefield licence with which they could compete in events that they may not normally be able to on a level 2 licence. Now the circuit uses the AASA insurance and permit system that which is now being used by a large proportion of motor sport promoters and clubs for events around the

country.

The Speed off the street days that allowed people to drive their own cars on the circuit under the Wakefield licence system, encouraging speed at the right venue and not on public roads were also

introduced and continue today.

From 2001 to 2008 the circuit held a round of the V8 development series, this for many years being the only stand alone round for those cars. The pit lane garages were added at this time, once again

improving the circuit’s facilities.

In January 2007 the circuit was bought by the Benalla Auto Club, the owners of the Winton circuit in country Victoria. At the end of 2008 a major re-surfacing of the circuit took place and this again has led to better lap times. 2010 has seen the introduction of a lighting system at all flag points that will warn drivers of incidents on the circuit and be operated from race control. With the com-plex now managed by Mathew Ronke and ongoing improvements happening the circuit is still a great

club sport venue.

With a great cafe and complete circuit viewing from the spectator

areas enjoy today’s racing.

The current lap record for the circuit is held by Ben Chrithon driving an F3 open wheeler and stands at 54.563 seconds, a fairly

quick time.

Wakefield Park, just another

great part of the Goulburn area.

Current lap Record Holder Ben Crighton from New Zealand

Formula Race Car

Title to be decided Garnet Patterson has scored his

maiden race win in the RACE

Magazine NSW Racing Car Cham-

pionship in

the 4th round at Sydney Mo-

torsport Park. Patterson led the

Trophy Race from start to finish,

holding off a

late surge from championship

leader Nathan Gotch, who had to

overcome a disastrous start that

relegated

him to 9th place on the first lap.

Patterson was having his first

outing in the newly acquired

Dallara F301 and

despite leading the final race all

the way he had to work hard over

the weekend, with mechanical

problems

causing him to miss the first pre-

liminary race, and having to work

his way through the field for a

determined

2nd place in race 2 after starting

from the rear of the grid. Patter-

son’s victory brought Gotch’s

winning streak

to an end after an impressive 8

races.

Gotch, despite his mishap in the

trophy race, had another com-

manding weekend in the Snake

Racing / AGI

Sport Dallara F304: pole position;

a new outright lap of 58.89 sec-

onds on the 2.8km ‘North’ Cir-

cuit; and 2

race wins. As a result he ex-

tended his lead in the champion-

ship and is in a virtually unassail-

able position

leading into the final round at

Wakefield Park in November.

Racing at Sydney Motorsport Park

on September 22 & 23 was con-

ducted in ideal conditions across

the

whole weekend and a field of 19

cars turned out for qualifying. As

well as having Patterson in a new

car,

Adam Proctor joined the series

for AP Racing in his Kawasaki

engine Stohr F1000. Not having

driven the car

before Friday practice, the focus

was on development and Adam

made sound improvement with

the car

across the weekend. In qualify-

ing, Gotch made it 4 poles from 4

rounds, a full second ahead of

Patterson,

with defending champion Glenn

Lynch (Eagle Transport Dallara

F397) in 3rd

, and the pair of Dallara F304’s

driven by Gary Smith and Ross

McAlpine close behind. Proctor

qualified a credible 8th, and

Edward Gavin

(Cheetah Mk8) was the first of

the 1600cc cars in 10th.

The first preliminary race on

Saturday afternoon started with

Patterson missing from the front

row due tomechanical problems.

This allowed Gotch a clear jump

into the lead, hotly pursued by

Lynch. From the outside of the

2nd

row Smith got out of shape and

was quickly passed by Robert

Choon (Edroy Mowers Dallara

F301), McAlpine, David Choon

(Edroy Mowers Dallara F395) and

Proctor. Gotch proceeded

cautiously for the first couple of

laps, and then got down to lap

record speed, opening a gap on

Lynch by about a second a lap.

Lynch had to deal with early

pressure from Robert Choon, but

by mid-race had pulled clear, and

likewise Choon had secured a

comfortable 3 rd

position. Behind them, David

Choon was winding the pressure

on McAlpine, eventually forcing

an error on the approach to Brab-

ham Straight on lap 15. Another

error 2 laps

later put McAlpine within the

sights of Smith, but he managed

to stay out of the Victorian’s

reach. Proctor followed in 7th,

the car running well but giving up

some straight line speed to the

Formula 3 cars. Darren Choon

(Edroy Mowers Dallara Formula R)

was close behind but could not

bridge the gap, with Gavin the

first of the Class 1 cars in 9 th

and Andrew Wlodek (Dallara

F304) rounding out the top

10.Ron Bennet in the Robertson

Transport Reynard Formula R was

brought back to the pits with a

badly damaged car after coming

adrift in Turn 1 while dicing with

team boss Terry Robertson and

unfortunately the damage was

substantial enough to end his

weekend.

For Race 2 on Sunday morning

Patterson had fixed his car and

was starting from the rear of the

grid, as was

Smith who took a penalty for

replacement tyres. Lynch and

Robert Choon both got the jump

on Gotch,

however as they came out of

Turn 2 Gotch had found his way

into 2 nd

behind Lynch. Proctor was an-

other who had made a good start

and was in 5th on Lap 1, but was

quickly overhauled by McAlpine

and Patterson,

who had worked his way to 7 th

by lap 1 and 6th by lap 2.

Gotch had been hard on Lynch’s

heels, and on lap 3 he had good

speed out of turn 3 and drew

alongside

Lynch on the entry to the ‘flip-

flop’. Both cars made it through,

but Gotch had the better line

into the corner

and took the lead, which left

Lynch vulnerable to Robert Choon

and Patterson. On lap 5 Choon

and Lynch

went through the 240 kmh Turn 1

side by side, but into Turn 2

Lynch out-braked himself and

with the ensuing

spin lost places to Robert Choon,

Patterson and David Choon.

Gotch looked set for another big

winning margin, but had a spin in

turn 2 on lap 12 which reduced

his lead to

5 seconds. Behind Gotch, Robert

Choon was able to hold out Pat-

terson for several laps, eventu-

ally

conceding the position on lap 9,

but he stayed within striking

distance for the remainder of the

race. Lynch recovered to 4th

, ahead of David Choon and McAl-

pine, the three cars staging a

close battle in the 2nd half of

the race. They were followed by

Smith, who worked his way up to

7th ahead of Darren Choon and

Proctor.
