Round 2 NSW state Championships April 27/28 2013
Welcome to round 2 of the NSW state championships. We have 4 categries this weekend with
the feature a 1 hour race each day for Production Sports Cars. This year GT cars older than 4
years have been added to Production Sports which bring along some exciting cars such as
Dodge Vipers, Lamborghini Galladro’s, 997 GT3 Cup Cars and Moslers. A bunch of very quick
Lotus will mix it up and it will be interesting to see ho the race unfolds.
Sports Sedans are always a crowd favourite with such a mix of cars and those big v8 6 Litre en-
gines putting out a lot of horsepower. This weekend the Sports Sedan Community of NSW pays
tribute to a competitor that has flown the sports sedan flag for well over 25 years. Des Wall lost
his battle with Cancer last year and the multiple National Sports Sedan Champion will be remem-
bered with the front row of the Grid being left vacant as a mark of respect.
Improved Production are all way a great performer at Wakefield Park. With again a split grid of
over and under 2 litre cars they will again put on a great show of racing. National Champion from
Tasmania Ray Hislop has joined the field this weekend and it will be a great hit out against the
top NSW cars.
We hope you enjoy the weekends racing and stay up to date with our website at
www.wakefieldpark.com.au

A Brief History of Wakefield Park
The Wakefield Park circuit was built by Paul Samuels and John Carter and was opened officially by John Fahey, the then NSW Premier and member for the Goulburn district in November 1994.
It was built with club motor sport firmly in mind and with the control tower and paddock facilities and carports it made some of our existing circuits look a bit out dated. Track days and supersprints were the usual events with race days for cars, motor bikes and go karts also becoming popular at
the circuit.
At 2.2 kilometres, with an reasonable length straight leading to a section of uphill bends with the loop at the top of the hill and then a downhill run into what became known as the fish hook section and a negatively banked last turn onto the main straight the circuit offered quite a challenge to
achieve a quick lap.
In 2000 the circuit changed hands for the first time with Rob Hodgkinson and Paul Phillips taking over. Soon after the change over the circuit was re-profiled with changes to the fish hook area and the final turn onto the main straight. Both of these changes improved the flow of the circuit, the
fish hook area in particular allowing for a faster run onto the back straight.
Under the new ownership the Wakefield Park licensing and permit system was introduced. This gave clubs a cheaper alternative to CAMS for the running of events and members could also pur-chase a Wakefield licence with which they could compete in events that they may not normally be able to on a level 2 licence. Now the circuit uses the AASA insurance and permit system that which is now being used by a large proportion of motor sport promoters and clubs for events around the
country.
The Speed off the street days that allowed people to drive their own cars on the circuit under the Wakefield licence system, encouraging speed at the right venue and not on public roads were also
introduced and continue today.
From 2001 to 2008 the circuit held a round of the V8 development series, this for many years being the only stand alone round for those cars. The pit lane garages were added at this time, once again
improving the circuit’s facilities.
In January 2007 the circuit was bought by the Benalla Auto Club, the owners of the Winton circuit in country Victoria. At the end of 2008 a major re-surfacing of the circuit took place and this again has led to better lap times. 2010 has seen the introduction of a lighting system at all flag points that will warn drivers of incidents on the circuit and be operated from race control. With the com-plex now managed by Mathew Ronke and ongoing improvements happening the circuit is still a great
club sport venue.
With a great cafe and complete circuit viewing from the spectator
areas enjoy today’s racing.
The current lap record for the circuit is held by Ben Chrithon driving an F3 open wheeler and stands at 54.563 seconds, a fairly
quick time.
Wakefield Park, just another
great part of the Goulburn area.
Current lap Record Holder Ben Crighton from New Zealand

Sports Sedans Round 1 NSW Sports Sedans head
to Wakefield Park on
27th/28th April for Round 1
of the Kumho Tyres NSW
Sports Sedan Champion-
ship. The later start to this
year’s season means that
cars will be well prepared
and ready for action in the
first round.
2012 Champion Stuart In-
wood will be there to de-
fend his title in the AU Fal-
con that took him to vic-
tory last year, but he is also
rumoured to be hunting
around for another car, one
that is more of a “Sports
Sedan”. Multiple winner of
the NSW Sports Sedan
Club Championship and
State Championship runner
-up for the past two years,
Simon Copping is keen to
go one better and steer his
Commodore to a State
Championship victory this
year – expect his car to be
excellently prepared, fast
and reliable.
Multiple State Champion,
Chris Jackson, will be driv-
ing hard in the Calibra in
2013, after reliability prob-
lems and the odd crash
kept him out of contention
the last couple of years.
Without doubt he has the
speed in the car, and is now
working on making the car
stronger to finish more
races.
After a big crash at the last
round in 2012, Anthony
Macready has rebuilt the
Nissan 300ZX and will
definitely be quick and a
chance at championship
victory again this year.
And there are plenty of
other drivers that will be
taking the challenge up
with fast cars this year too.
Geoff Whittaker’s Commo-
dore has had major work
done in the off-season;
Scott Reed’s Mustang has
been rebuilt and after prov-
ing very quick last year
will be ready for a strong
showing in 2013. Birol
Cetin is always quick in the
Camaro; Fred Axisa is
threatening in the Commo-
dore; Steve Shiels has a
new engine in his blue
Camaro and is hoping the
extra power will keep him
at the pointy end; David
McGuinness always has his
Calibra wound up and after
a complete engine rework
Grant Doulman returns in
the Black Beast Commo-
dore. Add category new-
comer Brad Shiels into the
mix with his RX7 and we
can expect the NSW Sports
Sedan Championship fight
to be another awesome one
once again in 2013, with no
less than 12 drivers in with
a chance to claim the title.
Division 2 will also be
hotly contested, with Jeff
Brown’s Falcon now sport-
ing a new engine, Sean
Sullivan coming to terms
with the awesome power
he has on tap in the Cor-
vette and defending D2
Champion Steve Lacey
very willing and able to
defend his title in the Com-
modore that has taken out
several Club Champion-
ships for three different
drivers over the last dec-
ade. Andy Cantrell in the
Falcon and the Commo-
dore of Darrin Renouf will
be regular runners this
year, adding to the number
of former V8 Supercars in
the field. Expect the fire-
breathing BMW of Erik
Gattermeier to be well
amongst it as he plans to
run every round this year,
and with the Camaro of
Ron Moller and Andrew
Leithhead’s Alfa also mak-
ing appearances, the Divi-
sion 2 battle will be spec-
tacular.
Division 3 is not without
fierce competition either,
with defending D3 Cham-
pion Dave Cameron back
again in the Gemini, pitted
against the Datsun of Mick
Johnson, Derek Cowan in
the RX2 and the returning
Kerry Millar in his Falcon.
So once again in 2013,
NSW Sports Sedans will be
providing spectacular rac-
ing throughout the largest
fields of Sports Sedans in
the country.
Round 1 will not only see
the usual intense racing
throughout the NSW
Sports Sedan grid, but is
going to be an awesome
and very special opening
round to the 2013 Champi-
onship.
After the passing of Sports
Sedan great Des Wall late
in 2012, NSW Sports Se-
dans are planning a couple
of things in memory of Des
for the first round.
Des was the winner of the
2009 National Sports Se-
dan Series, and was diag-
nosed with brain cancer in
July last year. At the time
he was leading the 2012
National title after a po-
dium finish at the joint
State/National round at
Sydney Motor Sport Park.
He was also a NSW Sports
Sedan competitor for over
25 years.
Besides his 2009 title, Wall
also had other success in
the Sports Sedan class in
1991, 1992 and 1993 in his
Toyota Supra, had several
starts in the Bathurst 1000
race, raced in other catego-
ries such as Production
Cars and also competed in
the Bathurst 12-hour event.
