INTRODUCTION

This module is part of the mechanical stream in the TAPE Metal and Engineering National Curriculum Project and is the third of three modules designed for the Basic CAD Operator level. The prerequisite for this module is NBB12 - Drawing Interpretation 1. This module NM06 builds on knowledge developed in prerequisite modules. After completing this module the student should be able to produce simple drawings using a CAD system. The student should become familiar with at least one CAD system and be able to logically plan an efficient approach to produce a simple drawing.

In terms of CAD software this module is generic ie., it doesn't cover a specific CAD system but rather covers the fundamental concepts and procedures. For the purpose of this module the CAD procedures, and tools/functions/commands have been grouped under seven headings, which are:

Section 1. The CAD system Deals with me management and 'user interface' issues.

Section 2. Drawing Tools Deals with CAD tools that produce elements such as lines, points, arcs, dimensioning etc. and highlights the importance of positional and geometric constraint modifiers as well as drawing aids.

Section 3. Editing Tools Deals with CAD tools that work on existing elements that produce fillets, chamfers or splitting an element into two elements etc.

Section 4. Transformation Tools This tool group is similar to editing tools and include functions such as move, copy, polar and rectangular duplication, scale etc.

Section 5. Producing a drawing This section allows the student to put all the 'tools' together and produce a CAD document Data management is covered ie. use of layers, colour and line types and efficient construction techniques based on the available CAD tools.

Section 6. Modifying existing CAD drawing. This section section 5 allows for the use of CAD tools covered in sections 1,2,3 and 4 in making 'changes' to existing CAD documents. By 'changes' we mean either deleting existing elements and redefming them or applying a CAD tool/command that allows changes to the element data.

Section 7. Producing a hard copy. This section covers the type of output devices that may be connected to CAD systems and the actual process of readying that device for the production of a 'hard' copy.

NM06CADA Teaching Guide November 1994

Page 6: NSW Module Resource Manual for the National Metal and

The CAD system that you are using mayor may not use the tool group labels above such as 'editing tools', 'transformation tools' etc., however they will be grouped in some way. The user manual of each CAD software highlights the grouping of its functions I commands through the use of a 'menu tree'. It is useful to identify how the tool groups are implemented from the onset as this will allow you to locate them quickly and easily. Indeed mastering other CAD systems is just a matter of identifying how the tool groups are implemented at the 'user interface' leveL

ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES

NSW implementation of NMEC

Assessing competency To be assessed as competent, students must: o show competency on each learning outcome, and preferably on each

performance criterion of each outcome, as prescribed in the National Module Descriptor.

o be tested separately on each learning outcome, either in an individual test or in a particular section of a larger test.

The student rollbook must clearly report competency for each learning outcome.

Retesting If a student does not show competency on a fIrst attempt at a test: o retest only the learning outcome not achieved. For instance, if the student fails

both the theory and practical performance criteria of a learning outcome, retest all theory questions and all practical tasks for that outcome. But if only the theory parts of an outcome are failed, retest the theory only.

o before retesting, give structured tutorial assistance so that the student's second attempt is likely to succeed. Such tutorial work may include special classes, structured homework, on-the-job assistance or a practical project.

Recording test results You can use the Student Results sheet (at the end of this manual) for this purpose. The results for each attempt at the separate learning outcomes should be recorded as follows:

o = PASS: indicating competency in the learning outcome.

II! = INCOMPLE1E: indicating competency was not achieved at the fIrst attempt.

o = FAlL: indicating competency was not achieved at the second attempt.

To report module results, use only P or F.

Practising for competency The review questions and skill practice exercises in the Student Workbook are not to be used for formally assessing student competency. They are designed only to help students prepare for the competency tests.

Constructing competency tests: guidelines

To construct your own tests follow the assessment requirements and penonnance criteria in the National Module Descriptor.

Test each learning outcome requiring short-answer questions or practical exercises. ~uly the learning outcomes should be tested, not associated knowledge or skills that are not part of the learning outcome.

The two sample tests on the following pages provide a guide to the fonnat and structure of competency tests for this module.

Theory tests D Use a mix of short-answer type questions. But please avoid:

- true/false questions; - completion questions; - multiple choice calculation questions (calculation questions should be open-

ended).

D Questions should match as closely as possible the length and level of difficulty of equivalent questions in the sample tests.

D The number of questions per outcome in your test should be similar to the number of questions in the sample test.

D Your test should be of similar duration to a sample test.

D Do the test yourself to check that questions and answers match and to determine duration of the test.

Practical tests D Design each practical task so it requires the same skill level as the equivalent

task in the sample practical test.

D Tests should be of similar duration to sample tests.

Skill practice activities

Skill practice activities that are suggested in this module are presented in the format shown below. The activities should be provided to the student in electronic format (CAD data mes), allowing the student to repeat the activities as many times as needed. The activities presented in this module isolate CAD skills and allow for qnick assessment. They allow you to quickly identify weak areas the student might need some additional assistance. The activities should contain all information necessary for completion. The format for assessment activities is the same, except that instructions focus on what is required rather than how it's done.

Section 5

1. • Starting a new document with pre-deflned parameters or' standard settings' saves a time.

2. • Depending on the CAD system. You may need to set the scale factor between drawing units and actual units. Workspace size may need to be set in terms of paper size also.

3. Possible methods ...

• From the start the scale factor is worked out and the rulers are set to allow the drawing to be produced on a standard drawing sheet

• Other systems allow you to scale the 'view' not the database when composing a drawing for plotting.

4 • 'Library' items are frequently used symbols such as fasteners, welding symbols, hydraulic symbols, architectural elements eg., windows, doors etc .. We do not draw anything twice in CAD we use these symbols to speed-up the production of drawings and aid in the consistent representation of these items.

88 NM06CADA

Teaching Guide November 1994

Page 85: NSW Module Resource Manual for the National Metal and

5. • Most CAD systems use colour to allocate line types 10 plotter pen numbers. Also some CAD systems can't display different line thicknesses and use colour instead. However colour is also used to highlight features on the (electronic) drawing.

6. • Layers allow the CAD operator to separate design functions such as electrical, plumbing, levels in buildings etc .. Layers can be manipulated ie., they can be hidden with the benefit of unclutering the screen or speed up the 'viewing' process. There are standards in layering and the operator needs to adhere to those standards.

7. The methods vary depending with the CAD system: • The operator may select a different line type using the 'command' line or

use the pull down menus.

• A floating line pallet may be available and the user selects the line type without 'hunting' for the item.

8. • Draw half the portion of the bush using the line tool and drawing aids/modifiers.

• Mirror the half portion to complete the bush.

• Apply the hatch function/tool.

• Dimension the part.

Section 6

1. a) Delete existing fillet and redefine with new value.

b) Change the size of a chamfer from 5 x 45 to 10 x 45.

c) As above.

c) Use the delete and extend commands. Delete the chamfer element and use the extend function to join the two elements.

d) Use the Delete and Polar Duplication command. First delete all but one hole, then use the Polar duplication command to redefme the new number of elements.

e) Use the Move command and specify an incremental/relative move of 'x' 10 'y' O.

f) • select object to change • select the line type from the floating tool pallet.

NM06CADA Teaching Guide November 1994

89

Page 86: NSW Module Resource Manual for the National Metal and

Section 7

1. a) -Laser printer/plotter

b) -inkjet plotters, electrostatic plotters

2. • Vector based devices draw the elements by 'pushing' the 'pen' from point to point producing a continuous element. Raster devices produce elements by using 'small' dots to derme it.

3. By colour, each line type is assigned a colour and each colour is assigned to a specific pen number on the plotter.

4. • Is the plotter switched' on' ?

• Is the plotter connected ?

• Was the appropriate device driver selected?

• What 'error' messages are displayed on the plotter and screen?

5. • the pen assigument table simply provides the listing of plotter pen number

6. •

7. a)
