Preface Page 4

PREFACE This report summarises the thirteen year data set of Workers Compensation claims from 1999-00 to 2011-12, in the areas of manual handling, falls on the same level and noise induced hearing loss. The report follows on from a report issued in 2011 that presented a 10 year data set to 2008-09. The report has been prepared for the NSW Mining Industry Health Management Advisory Committee. The Committee provides advice to the NSW Mine Safety Advisory Council on health issues in the NSW mining and extractives industry. The information is presented for the industry to monitor the selected workers compensation claims occurrence in the industry over time. It is difficult to use the information in the report to identify trends as there are many factors that influence the number and cost of claims. The environment of reporting workplace workers compensation claims is complex and multi-factorial. To disentangle and quantify different drivers is difficult, if not impossible. The information is only one set of information that can assist in understanding the impact of these illnesses and injuries have on the industry and workers. The dataset may have been influenced over the 13 year period by new legislation in NSW mining, different initiatives by the Department, Coal Services P/L, WorkCover and industry. WorkCover has also changed the way it treated claims during this period.

Hours Worked

Hours worked used in this report are as reported by NSW Trade & Investment in the NSW Mine Safety Performance Report 2009-10 available from www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/minesafety

Definitions Claims Frequency Rate

The number of claims per million hours worked.

ClaimsofNumber

Note: Hours worked used to calculate frequency rates in this report are for Coal,

Metalliferous and Extractives sectors only, as workforce and hours worked cannot be reliably sourced for Non-Coal Other and Petroleum (Onshore) sectors.

Gross Incurred Cost (GIC)

The sum of payments plus an estimate of future liability if the claim is still open at the end of the current financial year. GIC figures reported in this report are not adjusted for inflation.
