Taxpayers will foot the bill to pay the severance entitlements of 95 sta members made redundant in the handover of a Broadmeadows-based confectionary business.

Assets from King William Street confectionary manufacturer Betta Foods have been purchased for an undisclosed sum by New South Wales sweets maker Prydes.

Whittlesea Community Legal Services appears likely to lose two of its lawyers if the federal government doesn’t reverse millions of dollars in cuts to community legal centres.

Jemal Ahmet, chief executive ocer of Whittlesea Community Connections, which runs the service, said the organisation’s capacity would be reduced signicantly if funding was cut.

e current national partnership agreement for legal assistance expires at the end of June.

All state and territory governments have written to Attorney-General George Brandis warning that cuts to legal services would hamper eorts to combat family violence.

Last year’s federal budget cut $6 million from community legal centres and $15 million from legal aid commissions.

Mr Ahmet said a four-year funding deal of $120,000 a year for the Whittlesea centre would cease on June 30.

“We use that money to employ two part-time lawyers. If that money isn’t replaced, we will have to lay o sta.”

Service sta members fear there could be even more cutbacks if the Attorney-General’s plans to rearrange funding arrangements go ahead.

“We could go from six lawyers to three if there’s no other way to replace those funds,” Mr Ahmet said.

He said there were rumblings from the state government about a rescue package to assist the worst-aected community legal centres.

“We’re telling them we want to be part of that rescue package and would like it to be meaningful to retain our sta,” he said. “But it’s still a cut because Whittlesea’s population grows by 200 people every week.”

Cuts to hit legal hotspot

Victoria Legal Aid’s Kristen Hilton said VLA research conducted last year identied Whittlesea as a legal-needs hotspot, with family violence cases about 200 a year higher than the state average.

“ere’s strong demand for legal assistance in Whittlesea and cuts to funding of local community legal centres means more people will miss out on the help they need,” she said.

McEwen MP Rob Mitchell raised the plight of the Whittlesea legal centre in Federal Parliament late last month.

e parliamentary secretary to the prime minister, Alan Tudge, did not respond to requests for comment before deadline. But he has previously said new funding arrangements for legal services would be announced in the May budget.

A former classmate of Craigieburn teen Jake Bilardi, who is believed to have died in an Islamic State suicide bombing, has described his death as tragic.

Jamie Kassan, who attended Craigieburn Secondary College with Mr Bilardi, said he was shocked to hear of the reported death in Iraq.

“It certainly hurts to know someone you know has taken their life,” he said.

Another former classmate said Mr Bilardi became withdrawn aer his mother’s death in 2012.

e gied maths student dropped out of school last year before eeing the home where he lived with his siblings.

Craigieburn college principal Kate Morphy said the 18-year-old le the school at the end of year 11 in 2013. He then attended Rosehill Secondary College in Niddrie, where principal Peter Rouse described his attendance as “sporadic”.

Aer dropping out of school, Mr Bilardi bought a one-way ticket to Turkey, before heading to Iraq and Syria to ght for IS.

He had written a string of blog posts describing plans to attack cafes, shopping centres and consulates in Melbourne with knives, bombs and grenades.

Late last week, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said the government was trying to independently verify the teen’s death.

His passport was cancelled in October last year.

Man dies in factoryA 28-year-old Meadow Heights man died while allegedly breaking in to a factory in Broadmeadows last Wednesday. Emergency services were called to the King William Street site by people known to the man. Police are investigating but his death is not being treated as suspicious. A report is being prepared for the coroner.

Blitz on airport trafcFawkner highway patrol and the Australian Federal Police are targeting buses and taxis at Melbourne Airport. The blitz began last Thursday with a focus on enforcement and compliance for drivers, taxis and buses using the airport. An automatic number- plate recognition site was set up to check for suspended and cancelled licences and unregistered vehicles.

Cops link armed robberiesPolice have linked an armed robbery on March 7 to a series of about 15 similar crimes at gaming venues in the north-western suburbs over the past three months. They have been told two men entered the Roxburgh Park Hotel carrying a gun and a machete and struck a security guard in the face with the rearm. The men threatened patrons before stealing money and eeing in a stolen car. The security guard received serious injuries and was taken to the Northern Hospital. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

e late James Penrose’s national service will be honoured with a memorial stone in the Coolaroo park named aer him.

Hume councillors have given the green light to a proposal by the National Servicemen’s Association of Australia to install a stone memorial and a weeping tree in James Penrose Reserve.

Mr Penrose lived in Kalimna Crescent, next to the park, for 43 years until his death in 2013. e park was named in his honour as a tribute to his years of community service.

Mr Penrose was a community bus driver for Dianella Community Health, a former president and school council member of both Coolaroo South Primary School and Broadmeadows Technical School, a volunteer coach for local junior sports clubs and a

volunteer driver at the Sydney Olympic and Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

He was also instrumental in establishing the Hume Community Register, for which volunteers routinely call the municipality’s older residents to check on their health and well-being. He also helped form the Coolaroo Netball Club in the late 1970s.

An ocial naming ceremony for the reserve was held in late 2013.

Mr Penrose completed national service between April 1955 and April 1960.

His daughter, Jodie MacDonald, said the memorial was a great honour for her family. “It’s something we’re really proud of. Dad was so community-minded,” she said.

ere are no bells to signal the beginning and end of classes at this secondary school in Broadmeadows. Nor are there fences around the perimeter. Hume Central Secondary College resembles a university more closely than it does a high school.

e look and feel of the senior school campus in Tanderrum Way has been deliberately designed to ease students’ transition into tertiary education. It’s a subtle and ambitious aim considering that eight years ago the 25 per cent year 12 retention rates in Broadmeadows were signicantly below the state average.

is year, a record number of HCSC alumni are going to university.

More than half of the class of 2014 were accepted into their preferred university courses and 97 per cent were oered post-secondary education.

e school’s progress comes as a relief for principal Glenn Proctor, who has been at the helm since Broadmeadows, Erinbank and Hillcrest secondary colleges merged to form Hume Central in 2008.

For the past seven years, Mr Proctor has overseen an ambitious project to reverse years of neglect in education in Broadmeadows schools and inspire students to learn.

It’s part of what the former Brumby state government called the Broadmeadows Regeneration Project, in which 17 schools merged to become four at a cost of $100 million.

When Star Weekly caught up with Mr Star Weekly caught up with Mr Star WeeklyProctor and senior campus principal Irene Illiadis last week, they spoke of the school’s remarkable progress and of the challenge ahead to maintain those gains.

Higher attendance rates, school retention, VCE scores and acceptance into tertiary

No-bell prize for college

courses have been some of the benchmarks to track progress.

In 2008, the school’s leadership team set a 90 per cent attendance target. Now, for the rst time in the school’s history, attendance rates are sitting on about 91 per cent.

Two years ago they were about 87 per cent and before that they hovered around 60 per cent.

Mr Proctor said the success was underpinned by research on school improvement.

“We wanted to make sure that what we were attempting had been researched and worked,” he said. “When I rst came I felt students thought school wasn’t there to provide them with much. We’ve worked for students to see that education can empower them.”

A $6.9 million children’s hub has ocially opened in Craigieburn.

e Newbury Community Hub, on the corner of Newbury and Grand Boulevards, has preschool rooms, maternal and child health services, meeting spaces for community groups, training rooms, a toy library and a semi-commercial kitchen.

Hume mayor Adem Atmaca, fellow councillors, Yuroke MP Ros Spence and state Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos gathered to unveil the new centre last Wednesday. It can accommodate up to 99 children and will ensure the council can provide 15 hours of government-funded kindergarten for four-year-olds each week as well as other early-years programs.

Newbury Community Hub is part of the council’s four-year capital works program.

“We’re committed to building world-class facilities that provide our community with an opportunity to be inspired and engaged in their learning and development so they can grow and remain connected in their local neighbourhoods,” Cr Atmaca said.

e council received $1.069 million from the Department of Education and Childhood Development to partially fund the project.

Construction began in April last year.In 2013, a report commissioned by

Melbourne’s outer suburban councils showed $10 billion needed to be spent on new education, transport and health services in the next 15 years or there was the risk of creating a divide

between the well-serviced inner-city ring and the ailing outer suburbs. e One Melbourne or Two? report by Essential Economics found or Two? report by Essential Economics found or Two?the councils, including Hume, Whittlesea, Melton, Wyndham, Yarra Ranges, Casey and Kardinia, needed to cater for up to 650,000 more people within 15 years.

According to the report, $64 million was needed to build 74 new kindergartens to accommodate 7440 more kindergarten places.

Hume council predicts population growth of 79.5 per cent by 2041, from 193,022 people to 346,533 people. Growth in housing stock is a major driver of population growth in the area, particularly new housing estates on greeneld sites and subdivision. e number of houses in Craigieburn is set to rise by 108 per cent within 26 years, according to forecast.id gures.

Roadworks are under way in Kinglake West to make a scenic but dangerous stretch of road safer.

Yan Yean MP Danielle Green was in Whittlesea last week to announce the beginning of $4 million worth of safety upgrades to Whittlesea-Yea Road.

e project will trial “dragon teeth” line markings, used elsewhere in Australia to alert drivers to the fact they’re entering a 40km/h school zone.

Other improvements will include motorcycle-friendly wire-rope fence crash barriers, safer roadside drainage and skid-resistant asphalt.

According to VicRoads, in the ve years to July, 2014, there were 22 fatal car or motorcycle incidents and 12 serious injury-inducing crashes on the section of road between Wallan-Whittlesea Road and Whittlesea-Kinglake Road.

Ms Green said nearby residents and north-bound tourists would soon benet from the upgrades, which were expected to be completed within the next four months.

“We need to address the history of crashes on Whittlesea-Yea Road to ensure drivers travel safer and enjoy the spectacular views out to Kinglake National Park,” she said.

Late last year, a motorcyclist died in a collision aer swerving onto the wrong side of the road and into a four-wheel-drive on Whittlesea-Yea Road.

Planning for a new purpose-built cycling circuit in Hume has been put on hold because of insucient funds and a lack of suitable locations.

Hume council’s dra criterium cycling facility feasibility study recommended that a dedicated, o-road cycling facility only be built if a suitable site could be found and if external funding could be secured.

e council will redirect $420,000 it had set aside for the facility into other capital projects for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 nancial years.

Northern Cycling president Vince Sinni said he was disappointed the council had put the project on the backburner considering the growth cycling had experienced.

“We’re mindful that it’s one of many projects on their agenda and we don’t want to be critical of their process, but they really need to do something to accommodate cycling a bit more,” Sinni said.

e $25,000 dra study stated “the proposal should only be pursued further when funding becomes available”.

e estimated cost of building a criterium cycling facility – a criterium is a circuit race held on a course between 800 metres and three kilometres long – is between $3.7 million and $4 million.

e criterium circuit in Campbelleld is used by local cycling clubs for race meetings and training.

But the course, on National Boulevard, is a public road and cannot be closed to trac, raising safety issues.

Five sites in the municipality were assessed for their suitability, but most had issues such as being too small and soil subsidence or concerns about large mobs of kangaroos.

14 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 17, 2015

SPORTLady Broncos have target on their backs . . . and love itHume City Lady Broncos are preparing for yet another season as the hunted.

Competing in the state championships division of the Big V basketball competition, the two- time defending women’s champions have been sized up by all opposition teams throughout the o-season.

But any hope rivals had of ending the club’s dominant run may come unstuck sooner rather than later, with the Broncos adding some serious strength to their 2015 playing roster.

e club has welcomed former McKinnon point guard Nicole Zammit, Craigieburn power forward Nicole McMahon and prolic scorer Natalie Karantzoulis, from Diamond Valley.

Two-time Lady Broncos premiership coach and now assistant coach Warren Taylor was rapt with his side’s signings.

“When you look at what we have brought in it is really exciting,” he said.

“We probably weren’t the best team on paper last year but we certainly were the best team when it counted.

“is year we probably go close to having the best list. e three girls we have brought in are all quality players.”

e Lady Broncos will be led by Katrina Hibbert, who has taken on the head coaching role aer being an assistant coach at the club last season.

“Katrina is a breath of fresh air and has a dierent perspective on things which is really fantastic for the group,” Taylor said.

“I was there for two years and we have a fairly similar group to last year.

“So to have, not just a dierent voice but someone with the experience, the expertise and the knowledge of Katrina has been brilliant.”

e Lady Broncos began their 2015 campaign with a 65-42 away win against McKinnon.

e club’s rst home game will be this week when it hosts Warrandyte.

As the two-time defending champions, the desire for success at the Lady Broncos is as high as ever according to Taylor.

“One of the enjoyable parts about being at Hume City is that the expectation is excellence and the expectation is to win,” he said.

“We were able to win the last two, and having added a couple of really talented pieces to the puzzle, it is denitely the target.

“Obviously anything can happen and we know that other teams are getting better.

“We know we’re the hunted and there is always that challenge to stay on top.”

Whittlesea Pacers endured a bumpy start to the Big V basketball men’s championship season with a 76-55 loss to Werribee Devils on their home court at Mill Park on Saturday night.

e Pacers started promisingly to take a six-point lead into the rst break, but then it turned pear-shaped and they were outscored 63-36 from then on.

Jermaine Williams, with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Michael Petridis, with 16 points and seven rebounds, were the Pacers’ only consistent oensive threats.

e Pacers were a little rough around the edges, shooting 42 per cent from the free throw line and turning the ball over 17 times, so there is plenty to work on ahead of the double header round this weekend that sees them host Ringwood Hawks on Saturday night and make the short trip to Hume City Broncos on Sunday.

In women’s division 1, Whittlesea Pacers were never headed at home by Western Port Steelers on Saturday night, scoring the rst 10 points of the game and extending it to 26 by full-time.

Kimetria Hayden was the star for the Pacers with a huge double-double 24 points and 17 rebounds.

She turned it on from beyond the arc with six three-pointers. She also worked hard defensively with three steals and got teammates involved with ve assists.

Sharyn Hughes nished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Kellie Down had 11 points and six assists.

e Pacers will host Keilor under in the second round on Saturday night.

In men’s division 2, Craigieburn Eagles had an even contribution across the board in a 71-55 win against Pakenham Warriors.

Mark Welch was the most ecient Eagles player with 11 points on ve-of-seven shooting and eight rebounds.

Jermain Maybank had 12 points and nine rebounds, including a massive six oensive boards to give the Eagles second chance opportunities.

e Eagles will be hoping to make it two-from-two when they travel to Maccabi Warriors on Sunday.

Roxburgh Park-Broadmeadows captain-coach Mitch Johnstone spun his side to victory on the opening round of Sub-District cricket nals.

Johnstone delivered a marathon 31 overs to nish with 5-61 to ensure the Falcons defended a small total against Ivanhoe in the quarter-nal at Lakeside Drive Reserve.

Batting rst, the Falcons patiently worked towards 194 o 76.5 overs.

Simpson Obed rose to the occasion with a season-high 62 to rescue the innings from the middle order.

Opener Kurtley Brandt (35), in-form number ve Mitchell Strei (26) and tail-ender Lester Herathge (31) kept the scoreboard ticking over.

eir inability to bat out the full 80 overs would have irked Johnstone, but if there’s a bowling attack in the competition which can defend a small total it’s the Falcons’.

Ivanhoe made a strong start with an opening

stand of 48 but then the innings quickly disintegrated when ve wickets fell for just 13, largely because of the batsmen’s inability to handle Johnstone.

Whatever Johnstone did not destroy, opening bowler Patrick Matautaava (3-35) and fellow spinner Adam Yates (2-12) took satisfaction in doing the honours.

e Falcons have set up a semi-nal date with Altona, with the winner to go to the grand nal.

Plenty Valley will feature in the other semi aer obliterating Yarraville at the quarter-nal.

e big, bad Bats rolled the timid Eagles for just 45 in their pursuit of the 208 victory target.

Lorenzo Ingram (4-6), Ben Dennett (3-12) and Sean Ayres (2-4) were outstanding with the ball on day two.

Dennett was the man of the match, having top-scored for the Bats with 54 on the rst day.

e Bats will host Melton in what promises to be a mouth-watering semi-nal.

In the VTCA north B1 grand nal, Jacana

still has some work to do entering the third day against East Coburg at Walter Street Reserve, despite taking a healthy rst-innings lead.

As it stands, the match is hard to tip, with Jacana needing to take nine wickets and East Coburg requiring a further 165.

e stand-out for Jacana on the opening weekend was Telge Peiris, who scored half centuries (71 and 51) in both innings, but the biggest thorn in its side was Easts opening bowler Muddassar Hassan, who took 11 wickets (3-32 and 8-42).

is one promises a thrilling nish.In the NWMCA Luscombe Shield decider,

Gladstone Park was outclassed by Kealba-Green Gully, who claimed its third premiership in four seasons. e Kookaburras were bowled out for just 105, a massive 156 short of victory.

In the DVCA Barclay Shield showpiece, Rosanna could muster only 103 and will have a tough time defending it against Diamond Creek, who are 3-36 in reply.

Hume City lit up the FFA Cup with a ve-goal drubbing of State League Riversdale and now gets a chance to light up its home at Broadmeadows Valley Park.

City will ick the switch on its new lights at John Ilhan Memorial Reserve for the rst time in a competitive match in a big NPL battle with North Geelong Warriors at 7pm on Saturday.

City coach Lou Acevski is calling on the local community to pack the grandstands for the historic occasion.

Riversdale to progress to the h round of the FFA Cup and a step closer to a potential date with an A-League club.

Acevski was wary of the threat Riversdale posed aer they had shocked state league 1 club Altona East Phoenix a week earlier.

But he need not have worried, even though his team played its best football only in patches.

“We missed a few chances but we’ll take it and move on,” he said. “It doesn’t bother me if it’s 1-0 or 15-0 as long as we keep going through.”

Marcus Schoen scored the opening goal to

“It’s our rst night game at the facility and it will be exciting,” he told Star Weekly.

“We want to play football that attracts everyone to come and watch, whether you’re a Hume City supporter or neutral.”

e match against North Geelong will be only the third NPL match of the season for Hume, which has won one and lost one so far.

e previous match was abandoned aer a serious injury to an Oakleigh Cannons player and a round three meeting with Northcote City was postponed to this Tuesday night.

City has built momentum with the win over

start the rout and doubled up in the second half to nish with two for the game. Deang Aguek tapped in a ne piece of build-up play to make it 2-0 at half-time.

Calvin Mbarga came o the bench to score two late goals to complete Riversdale’s misery.

In other FFA Cup results, Whittlesea Ranges bowed out of the competition with a 3-2 defeat to Goulburn Valley Suns, Diamond Valley United was gallant in its 2-1 defeat to powerhouse Green Gully Cavaliers, while Whittlesea United was given a football lesson in a 5-0 loss to NPL champion South Melbourne.

Five-star City marches on cup

South Morang needs an injection of players to ensure its 2015 women’s football campaign goes ahead.

Aer a number of successful seasons competing in the Victorian Women’s Football League, the Lions need players for their under-18 and under-12 sides.

Football operations manager Mark Muscat said it was important for the club to be able to eld teams in those age groups.

“For whatever reason, we lost a fair few players last year and a few this year,” he said.

“We see the women’s program as important to football in general. We want players to know they’ll be looked aer at our club.”

If it can attract enough players, South Morang will have teams in all junior age groups and senior divisions of the VWFL.

Muscat said the idea was to provide an environment where female footballers could stay with the club throughout their careers.

“ey can start with us and nish with us,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what age they are, they’re welcome at South Morang.”

While still hunting for its rst women’s premiership, there has been plenty of individual success at South Morang.

A number of Lions players have been selected in Northern Football League women’s representative sides and some have been invited to train with TAC Cup side Calder Cannons.

“I think there has been a lot of hard work from the girls,” Muscat said.

“ey’ve worked extremely hard to play at the highest level possible. ey’ve put in and I think they’re starting to see results.”

Anyone interested in nding out more information about the South Morang women’s football program is encouraged to contact Mark Muscat on 0419 526 301.
