3. Thinking in Linux Description: The effective use of Linux requires an understanding of Linux and the ability to think in Linux. This session is an introduction for new users that incorporates information about advanced tasks required for effective use of Linux. Included are the core concepts in using Linux including adding and removing applications, system updates, understanding the file system, commands to mount and remove drives, printing, networking commands, accessing remote disks, process management, user management, and system administration concepts. 7. 15. Teaching Electronics from a Systems Point of ViewDescription: Reasons for the shift to a systems approach will be briefly reviewed. 18.  Practical Use of DimDim in the Academic Environment Description: This session introduces the practical use of Dimdim as an academic environment support tool.  Additional coverage includes use of Dimdim in meetings and related forums, such as this Faculty Institute Conference. The general features of Dimdim are covered as well as the roles of the users. Product requirements and limitations are presented. Real experiences of the practical use of Dimdim are covered as used in “typical” classroom, conference and home environments.  The session concludes with a demonstration of Dimdim features used in this conference. Additional features are demonstrated as time permits. Questions welcomed during and after the presentation. Computer Basics II: System Maintenance Description: Techniques for improving system performance by removing temporary files and defragmenting the hard drive; antivirus protection (inspecting system, quarantine flushing, live updates); Microsoft Windows updates (certify system, installing new Windows update utility, automating installation of high priority updates); manufacturers’ update utility (acquiring and installing manufacturers’ automated updates programs). Updating notebook BIOS and system drivers will be demonstrated and practiced.

Improving Classroom Results the Clinton Community College WayDescription: Three amigos from Clinton Community College discuss classroom techniques that they have found to improve results in the classroom. Maggie Courson will discuss integration of Blackboard and technology into Math, Al Cordes will show how students used video analysis to demonstrate physics concepts while incorporating umbrella competencies and curriculum integration and Janice Padula will describe how her students infused the Umbrella Competencies into their Computer Apps projects. 21. 25.    Cloud Computing . . . The Next Generation of IT!Description: As digital information - projected to double every 18 months - grows more complex so does the IT infrastructure that transports, stores, secures, and replicates these bits. Cloud computing is a natural evolution of IT infrastructures (e.g., traditional clusters and data centers) that is evolving rapidly to contain explosive data growth and meet escalating business requirements. These “clouds” (public/private/hybrid) provide computational resources, storage, application hosting, and transfer of data as a service over the Internet, and customers are charged based on their utilization. This presentation will cover cloud computing fundamentals and touch upon EMC’s cloud strategy and initiatives. It will wrap up with information on EMC Academic Alliance (EAA) program. 26. ePortfolios Using the Epsilen EnvironmentDescription: Epsilen is a centrally hosted eLearning environment offering a wide range of course delivery, assessment and collaboration products and services. Epsilen allows faculty and students to create ePortfolios, and to deliver online course materials any time, everywhere. Use ePortfolio to engage students throughout his or her academic career. Queensborough Community College has created the Epsilen Enterprise ePortfolio environment for its faculty and students.
