Role of NSBE SpaceMission

• Stimulate the active participation of the community, with focus on the Black community, both within and beyond the engineering profession, in space-related activity



Role of NSBE SpaceCore Values

• Space-related technological advancement is the destiny of all humanity and the community, including the Black community, must play a significant role in this enterprise




• All Americans must legitimately have and accept ownership of the American space program




• A sustained, visionary American space capability is absolutely necessary for the United States to protect its technological leadership, economic vitality, and security




• There must be an increased engagement of the community in space-related education and technological development activities




• The current space-related capabilities of the nation must be transferred to future generations



Role of NSBE SpaceObjectives

• Assist private and non-profit minority organizations with the development of competitive contract applications for access to low-Earth orbit and other services to NASA




• Encourage and actively participate in research surrounding the seventeen enabling technologies identified as necessary for successful implementation of the national space exploration vision




• Apply collective technical expertise to generate ideas, technologies, and management tools that will help NASA accomplish its scientific and exploration goals




• Identify and recommend to NASA methods to enhance its efforts to target and recruit under-represented populations in the fields of math, science, and engineering




• Provide to NSBE College Initiative, Academic Excellence, Pre-College Initiative Chairs, and the NSBE Community College Initiative Committee a complete listing of NASA-sponsored education initiatives available to NSBE members and encourage NSBE participation




• Actively develop and implement novel methods for communicating with the community, with focus on the Black community, about space, demonstrating why space exploration is vital to our scientific, economic, and security interests

• Current/former NASA, contractor, other space organization

• Grad student, post-doc, faculty in space-related field of study

• Government executive or legislative body with space-related responsibilities

Project Arusha Concept of Operations

• Kiswahili for “He makes fly (into the skies)” • Design project to create a conceptual design for a

48-person lunar base• Provides a future vision for human space activity

and utilization of the Moon following NASA’s initial return to the Moon

• Purpose is to accelerate the commercial use of the Moon, in line with the provisions of the National Aeronautics and Space Act




• Design concepts for Moonbase Arusha will be refined and revised through iterations and evaluations of conceptual designs

• Assumes the following elements: – Habitat– Laboratory– Logistics– Command– Medical

– Recreational– Power & Thermal– Landing Pad– Utility Rover– Pressurized Rover

– Garage– Crew Landers– Cargo Landers– Unpressurized

• Modular base configuration assumed• Primary modules to be buried under lunar regolith

due to radiation & thermal concerns • Deployment assumption - limited to:

– Delta 4 Heavy– Atlas 5 Heavy– Crew Launch Vehicle– Cargo Launch Vehicle– Hohman transfers, solar electric propulsion, and weak

stability boundary trajectories




• First Moonbase Arusha element for development in 05-06 is a Pressurized Rover

• Arusha Pressurized Rover basic description:– Pressure vessel dimensions approximately: 4m

diameter, 12m length

– 20,000 kg mass

– Crew size: 2-12 depending on mission

– Maximum mission length: 15 days

– Maximum range: 300 km

Spaceward Bound

• Partnership with NASA/Ames Research Center– NSBE Space responsibility is to secure student

participants (NSBE collegiate members)– Field excursions to research stations analogous

to exploration of other planets – simulates life in a mission to Mars

• College students, graduate students, faculty, and K-12 teachers

• Mars desert research station (Utah)

• Atacama desert (Chile)



Who’s Who Among African American Space Professionals

• National listing of prominent/successful African Americans within the space industry

• Marketed as a networking tool to space professionals and a recruiting tool to space companies

• Companies invited to submit their top 50 employees

• Listing will feature the top 200 nationally
