Applications and uses ofHMR Mouldings

For a great finish, start with GoldenEdge HMR (high moisture resistance)Mouldings manufactured in New Zealand from premium quality GoldenEdgeMedium Density Fibreboard.GoldenEdge HMR Mouldings are designed for interior applications and areavailable in a wide range of profiles to suit both modern and traditionaldecors. The convenient 5.4m length enables the fitting of architraves arounda door to be completed from a single piece. New pack sizes are lighter andeasier to handle.

Applications

GoldenEdge HMR Mouldings are designed for interior use and are notrecommended for use in situations where they will be exposed to water orprolonged high humidity. Do not use in shower cabinets or saunas. They should not be used for exterior applications. In situations where they will be exposed to heat from fireplaces or solidfuel heaters, GoldenEdge HMR Mouldings should be installed with thesame clearances used for solid timber.GoldenEdge HMR Mouldings are resistant to fungal attack provided theirmoisture content does not exceed 20% for extended periods. They are alsoresistant to attack by common household wood borer.Prior to fixing, GoldenEdge HMR Mouldings should be protected frommoisture, excessive heat and direct sunlight. After fixing, nail or screwholes should be stopped and sanded prior to sealing with paint or aclear finish.

Profiles are supplied in 5.4m lengths EXCEPT Homestead Cornices which are supplied in 5.1m lengths

ConditioningAll HMR Mouldings and other wood based productsincluding timber will shrink when the moisture contentfalls as a result of drying conditions.Prior to fixing, GoldenEdge HMR Mouldings shouldbe protected from moisture, excessive heat and directsunlight. It is recommended that the GoldenEdge HMRMouldings are removed from the protective plasticwrapping and conditioned at the site of installationfor a period of at least 48 hours.

NailingWhen fixing GoldenEdge HMR Mouldings by nailing,40mm or 50mm finishing brads are recommendedand should penetrate a minimum of 25mm into theframing timber. Should it be necessary to nail throughthe side rather than the face of the moulding, thisshould be done at least 25mm from the end of themoulding.

ScrewingA pilot hole equal to the diameter of the screw shouldbe drilled through the moulding before screwing. When screwing through the edge of mouldings thisshould be done at least 25mm from the end of themoulding.

StaplingExcessive penetration of the staples should be avoidedand staple length selected to give a penetration intothe framing timber equal to the thickness of themoulding being fixed.

Installation & Finishing

Renewable Resource

GoldenEdge Medium Density Fibreboard isproduced from high quality plantation grown

Radiata Pine fibre - a renewable resource whichhelps to preserve our natural environment andhas the environmental performance certification

of Environmental Choice New Zealand.

AdhesivesGoldenEdge HMR Mouldings are suitable for fixingusing building adhesives. Contact, stud and wallboardadhesives manufactured by leading adhesivemanufacturers should be used in accordance withtheir instructions.

StoppingStop all nail and staple holes with a proprietary plasticwood putty. Match and blend colours as required tosuit. Lightly sand with 320 grit paper.

PaintingFor best results application of three coats isrecommended.First coat Primer/undercoat is critical to the final finish. It is recommended that primer/undercoat is appliedto paint manufacturer's recommendations.Apply second and third coats or additional coats asrequired.A light sand using 280 to 320 grit paper isrecommended after the first coat and betweensubsequent coats.

NOTEGoldenEdge Primed Mouldings have been machine coated witha premium acrylic undercoat. Apply two even coats of premiumacrylic, enamel or an acrylic mix to finish. For superior glossfinish apply an additional undercoat (allowing to dry overnight)

prior to the two top coats.

Clear FinishingApply first coat of clear finish according to the paintmanufacturer's recommendations, taking specific noteof drying and recoating times.Apply second and third clear coats according tomanufacturer's recommendations. A light sand using320 grit paper is recommended after the first coat andbetween subsequent coats.

GoldenEdge HMR Grooved Door Jambs are 25mm or 28mmthick and are manufactured with the consistency and qualityyou expect from GoldenEdge MDF.GoldenEdge HMR Door Jambs are supplied in 2.1m, 4.2mor 5.1m lengths. (The 5.1m length will complete a doorframe).

DescriptionGoldenEdge HMR Door Jambs have similar physicalcharacteristics to GoldenEdge Medium Density Fibreboardin sheet form. Resistant to warping and splitting,GoldenEdge HMR Door Jambs are more consistent in qualityand easier to install than conventional timber jambs.

Fixing and FinishingFixing To FramingGoldenEdge HMR Grooved Door Jambs can be fixedthrough faces or edges with screws or nails.

NOTE: Ensure that the timber framing does not have amoisture content of 20% or more before fitting HMR DoorJambs.

ScrewingThe best results are achieved with parallel thread screwssuch as the Twinfast or particle board screws. Conventionalwood screws should not be used. Screws inserted intothe edges should not be less than 25mm from the corners. It is important not to overtighten screws as this will reducethe holding strength.

Pilot HoleA pilot hole is recommended to avoid splitting during edgescrew fixing. Pilot holes should be drilled approximately2-3mm beyond the expected insertion depth.

Screw Gauge Pilot Hole

4 1.5mm5 1.8mm6 2.0mm7 2.2mm8 2.5mm9 2.8mm

Stapling and NailingStaples and nails can be used effectively for joint fitting. For best results it is helpful to add adhesive to the jointprior to assembly. When stapling it is important to havegood control of air pressure to avoid excessive penetrationof staples. For nailing use either annular, grooved or helicalnails of 13 or 14 gauge, for best results.

AdhesivesWhere staples or nails are being used, best results areachieved applying water resistant adhesive to the jointprior to assembly.

Sanding and FinishingIf edge sanding is required, use 120 grit paper followedby 240 or 320 grit paper for best results.

PaintingPrior to priming, stop all nail holes with solvent basedwood dough and lightly sand.Brush, roller and spray application techniques may beused in accordance with paint manufacturers’ specifications.
