To Karen

Special thanks to Peter Yates, Dick Morin,Linda Swecker and George Duncan for their

help in putting this book together.

Page 5: Now This Is Where I Draw the Line!

Ever since he started his “career” by drawing on the walls of his parents’home in Manassas, Virginia as a small child, John Rose has shared hiswonderful gift of storytelling through pictures.

As an editorial cartoonist, Rose has the rare talent to engage the reader ashe lampoons a deserving politician one day while eliciting a tearfulresponse as he uses the same space the next day to honor a departed hero.

While his wit can be biting, Rose gets his point across without the need toshock or offend on a daily basis.

I am sure readers wonder how John comes up with his many ideas for editorialcartoons. I am certain that many picture him deep in thought after spendinghours reading many of the nation’s leading newspapers to keep up withcurrent events.

Truth be told, he is probably really sitting in his study at home with hisslippers on (still, after lunch), reading a gossip magazine and searchingfor the perfect pizza slice when the ideas just come to him (sorry to revealyour secret, John!).

Seriously, John Rose is a fi ve-star talent, and you will be glad that youare joining the tens of thousands of readers who get to see where he “drawsthe line” each day in the pages of the Daily News-Record.

Enjoy!

About The Author:John Rose began his cartooning career as a small child on the walls of his parents’ living room. He continued throughout his school years in the margins of his test papers hoping for extra credit if he could make the teacher laugh.

A native Virginian, Rose graduated from James Madison University in 1986 with a bachelor of fine arts degree in art and art history. After graduation he drew free-lance sports cartoons for northern Virginia newspapers. He joined Byrd Newspapers of Virginia in 1988, starting at the Warren Sentinel in Front Royal and then moving to the Harrisonburg Daily News-Record. His cartoons have won awards from the National Newspaper Association and the Virginia Press Association. Besides appearing in the Byrd Newspapers, his editorial cartoons appear in other papers across Virginia and are distributed by the Scripps Howard News Service.

Since mid-1998, Rose has worked on King Features’ nationally syndicated comic strip, Barney Google and Snuffy Smith. First as an inking assistant to creator Fred Lasswell and then taking over all of the drawing responsibilities of the daily and Sunday strip after Lasswell’s death in March, 2001. This popular comic strip runs in about 500 newspapers in many different countries.

Rose creates Kids’ Home Newspaper, a weekly childrens' cartoon/activity page that has been syndicated with Copley News Service since 1991. He has authored/illustrated four books for Pelican Publishing Company and his cartoon illustrations have also appeared in books published by Scholastic, Nancy Music Company and Magination Press. Rose is a member of both the National Cartoonists Society and the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists. In November, 2004, he was awarded the Outstanding Profes-sional Achievement in the Media Award from the Shenandoah Valley Public Relations Council for his cartooning work.

He lives with his wife, Karen, and daughters, Meredith and Sarah, in Harrisonburg. When he’s not cartooning, Rose enjoys spending time with his family, freshwater fishing, and eating pizza.
