1. About the Sunflower Foundation

Our Story

The Sunflower Foundation (Australia) Inc. began in 2008, when Kim and Paul Power took a life-changing trip to Guamote, a rural town located in Ecuador. They visited Inti Sisa; ‘Inti’ meaning sun, and ‘Sisa’ meaning flower. Inti Sisa is a non- government organisation supporting the local Andes villages. It features a kindergarten, a tourist hostel, a computer centre, and tutoring and vocational classes. Once Kim and Paul had got to know the locals of Guamote, they heard whispers of a dream; to create a scholarship program for indigenous girls that would help Guamote adapt and transform from an agricultural to a light based industry hub, to promote economic growth. Kim and Paul, upon hearing talk of this dream, decided to take on the challenge and make the dream a reality. Their inspiration was Kim’s late mother, Patricia Eileen Monaghan. From a young age, Patricia was a bright, diligent student who was awarded several scholarships to Secondary School and appeared to have a promising future in her education. However, to her dismay, she was left with no choice but to leave school at the tender age of 13, in order to take up a Hairdressing Apprenticeship to financially support her brothers and sisters during the Great Depression. Growing up, Patricia often felt inadequate and uninformed due to her lack of education. However, her choice to forgo an education and put her family first is why Kim and Paul chose to endow an annual scholarship in her name. They wanted to share her story with the world, let her legacy live on and inspire girls everywhere. Thus, a family association and Trust was created not only to honour the tremendous sacrifices Patricia made for her family, but also to provide disadvantaged girls from developing nations with the access to and opportunity for education. In 2008, the family association and Trust became the charity ‘Education for Ecuador’. Unfortunately, just as Education for Ecuador was starting to get on its feet, the European Board of Inti Sisa rejected the scholarship program. The Board felt that the scholarships awarded would benefit individuals, rather than the community as a whole. Therefore, an organisational restructuring was necessary for the charity to stay true to its mission. The Committee of Management decided to move to a grants-based model and open applications for grants to educate girls in developing countries. Therefore, with this broader scope for its work, Education for Ecuador underwent a name change to become ‘The Sunflower Foundation’ in 2010, thus keeping its links to its roots at Inti Sisa. In 2013, the Foundation was authorised as an overseas aid organisation with full OAGDs status and full DGR status. That meant that all donations over $2 to The Sunflower Foundation Public Fund would be tax deductible. Due to ATO requirements, the trust was then closed, but the Patricia Monaghan grant still continues to be the first grant awarded each year in order to keep her legacy alive. Though the Foundation has undergone several changes, the mission remains the same: to educate and empower as many girls as possible in the developing world, seeding hope and opportunity where there was none.

How We Work

We partner with local, non-government organisations (NGOs) and charities⎯the grassroots people who know what is needed and offer utmost efficiency⎯via an annual grants process. We only grant funds to registered charities and NGOs, and we have approved policies in place to ensure grant monies do not go to terrorist fronts or fake charities. Funds are sent only to authenticated accounts. Since our inception, and up until 2016, we have funded 18 projects in seven countries. We have reached thousands of girls and their families. We have provided tuition centres, educational supplies, showers for a boarding school, sewing centres, computer labs and teachers, community education and girls’ empowerment programs. You can read about our projects here and full disclosure of our process is found on our website at http://www.sunflowerfoundation.ngo/

Now I Can Competition Brief

In 2015-16, our Tanzanian project was called Sasa Naweza, Swahili for “Now I Can”. This captures the empowerment education provides for girls in developing countries. It enables them to earn more lifelong, to avoid teen pregnancy and HIV/AIDS infection, to know their rights about child marriage and to build economically sustainable communities. We have adopted this theme for our 2016 competition. Your brief for this competition is to capture the moment when ”I wish I could” becomes “Now I Can” for a girl or woman. Your photo may include multiple subjects. Your brief for this competition is to capture the glint in the eye, the passion/exuberance/intention in the body, the smile on the lips, the confidence, the courage, the grit and self-esteem of girls free to be themselves with integrity and authenticity in the moment—girls who reject the social expectation that they need to make themselves appear to be less than they are to conform to social stereotypes of femininity. Your Entry must be accompanied by a short paragraph telling us your photo’s story. We are focusing on girls and women because gender equality is the UN global goal for 2030. Even in high-income countries, stereotypes of appropriate female behaviour impact on girls at the age of puberty. The video, “Run Like a Girl”, demonstrates amply how #LikeAGirl has become a derogatory term. Statistically, women are less empowered in the workforce and gender wage parity is still decades away. We fund girls’ education and empowerment in countries where girls suffer far more extreme gender discrimination. Such an exercise is highly significant for them.
