THANKSGIVING MASS

Will be celebrated at 10:00AM on Thursday, No-vember 25. It will be bilingual. Parishioners are en-couraged to bring non-perishable food items which will be given to the parish Food Pantry for distribu-tion to those in need. The church will be closed for the day after the Mass. The parish office will not be open.

CONCERT On Sunday, December 5, at 3:00PM in the church, there is the final concert in the monthly series. It is a concert for Soprano, Violin and Piano, and it features Evelyn Thatcher (soprano), Vita Wallace (violin) and Preston Smith (piano). The concerts are FREE and run approximately 50 minutes. All are welcome, and please bring family members, neighbors and friends.

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension, Today in the Church we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. The Solemnity of Christ the King is a relatively recent addition to the western liturgical calendar, having been instituted in 1925 by Pope Pius XI. Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King in his 1925 encyclical letter Quas Primas, in response to growing na-tionalism, communism and secularism. Christ the King is always celebrated on the last Sunday of the liturgical year. This coming Thursday, November 25th is Thanksgiving Day. Thanks-giving Day is the day set aside, not by the church, but rather by the country on which we consciously give thanks to God for the many blessings God has given us. We have to be conscious of our bless-ings, otherwise they can so easily be taken for granted. It was in the year 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln officially declared Thanksgiving to be a national holiday, and it has been celebrated religiously ever since. I say that it is celebrated religiously because more people come to Mass on Thanksgiving Day than on most holydays of obligation. There seems to be something very appro-priate, and very necessary about giving thanks. On Thanksgiving Day, we all come together as one parish family to give thanks. On Thursday, there will be just one Bilingual Mass at 10:00AM. We continue our custom here at Ascension of asking parishioners to bring in canned foods or non-perishable goods on Thanksgiving Day. The food that is brought in on that day will be presented dur-ing the Mass. We do this in order to help replenish our Food Pan-try. Food is now distributed on the 3rd Saturday of each month. We are grateful to be in a position of providing food to those in need. This of course is done through the generosity of so many good and generous parishioners. Since our numbers have grown exponentially since the beginning of the Pandemic, our need is greater than ever before. Now, on most Saturdays, we are giving food to more than 400 people. Naturally we are going through food so much faster than we ever have in the past. Therefore, we are grateful for any and all donations. No food donation is too small -- even a couple of cans of soup can be a tremendous help. Today there is a second collection. For a century, Catholic Charities has been serving New Yorkers in need by providing a range of ser-vices that provide help and create hope for the most vulnerable among us, non-Catholics and Catholics alike. Again to remind you, Catholic Charities has inaugurated the Catholic Charities Campaign for Charity and Justice collection. This is not another second collec-tion, but rather a transition from the former Catholic Campaign for Human Development collection. This change was made in order to better assist parishes and local community groups with their own charitable and social ministries. A portion of the funds raised will be returned to the parishes in small grants to support local social ministry initiatives. Thank you for your continued support! Happy Thanksgiving! Peace, Fr. Estimados Feligreses y Amigos de Ascencion, Hoy en la Iglesia celebramos la solemnidad de Cristo Rey. La Solemni-dad de Cristo Rey es una adición relativamente reciente al calendario litúrgico occidental, instituida en 1925 por el Papa Pío XI. El Papa Pío XI instituyó la Fiesta de Cristo Rey en su encíclica Quas Primas de 1925, en respuesta al creciente nacionalismo, comunismo y secular-ismo. Cristo Rey se celebra siempre el último domingo del año litúrgi-co. El próximo jueves 25 de noviembre es el Día de Acción de Gracias. El Día de Acción de Gracias es el día reservado, no por la iglesia, sino por el país en el que damos gracias a Dios conscientemente por las muchas bendiciones que Dios nos ha dado. Tenemos que ser con-scientes de nuestras bendiciones, de lo contrario, pueden darse por sentadas fácilmente. TURKEY DRIVE!

The Ascension food pantry, part of the Religious Education program, the Spirit Squad (our youth group) and the students of Ascension School, have been operating a food pantry at Ascension for 6 years now. As many of you know, the needy neigh-bors of our community have depended on the do-nations of many of our parishioners for grocer-ies throughout this pandemic - we serve 350 - 400 families now, when we had just 60-70 before. We have come through, thank you all for your help! We are now soliciting monetary donations for Thanksgiving turkeys, we have a goal of $7,000 to serve 350 families. Giving each family a turkey, with all the fixings, will enable them to have a wonderful meal with their families. Please consider helping us help the many of our community in need; those we now call our friends. PLEASE, CONSIDER A MONETARY DONATION OF WHATEVER YOU CAN TO THE TURKEY DRIVE. Checks can be made to "Ascension Church Food Pantry" and left to the attention of Robin Klueber at the rectory. Or, cash donations can be left with the rectory, to the attention of Robin Klueber, please be sure to get a receipt from the Reception-ist. LA DESPENSA DE ALIMENTOS DE ASCENSION ¡ACCIÓN DE GRACIAS TURQUÍA DRIVE!

La despensa de alimentos de Ascension, parte del programa de Educación Religiosa, el Spirit Squad (nuestro grupo de jóvenes) y los estudiantes de As-cension School, han estado operando una despensa de alimentos en Ascension durante 6 años. Como muchos de ustedes saben, los vecinos necesitados de nuestra comunidad han dependido de las donaciones de muchos de nuestros feligreses para comprar víveres durante esta pandemia; servimos a 350-400 familias ahora, cuando antes teníamos solo 60-70.
