STAN MOUNTAINPresident

As autumn began so did a new year of Officers and Directors for the North Texas Home Builders Association. Now that my reign as Vice President has ended I take on a new venture as President. I would like to thank all of you for allowing me to be your President for 2011/2012. My goal is to continue to brighten the future of the association and help it to shine throughout the community. I can only be successful with the help of those who will be serving with me and the continued support of the association members.

As your President your ideas and opinions are important to me. Don’t just hide in the background. If you have any ideas or suggestions please call me or one of the chairmen of the committees and let them know. Help us to help make your association work for you.

It is important to get involved. With your membership you can be involved at the local level, state level or nation level. When you look around the community think of what you can do to make it better. A small gesture on your part can make a big impact. Don’t be the person who sits and waits for someone else to make a difference. Go the extra mile and be the match that lights the fire to help make Wichita Falls a better community. The literature you receive is your window to opportunities so make sure you take time to read your emails, the newsletter and any correspondence you get from TAB and NAHB.

When people see you out in the community set a tone for the association by being that person who is friendly and tells someone to have a good day. Or smile and hope your smile is contagious. That’s what living is all about. Live each day to its fullest and help people around you live too!

I encourage you to get to know the people in the association. It’s your association! Remember it is importance to do business with a member. We all benefit in the long run. I look forward to serving the North Texas Home Builders Association.

Texas Association of Builders First Vice President David Miller was the speaker and installation officer at the October membership luncheon of the North Texas Home Builders Association held Thursday, October 6, at the Wellington Banquet & Conference Center.

The new board of directors consists of President Stan Mountain, Vice President Steven Hinson, Associate Vice President Sharon Tucker, Treasurer Barney Brock, and Secretary Tim Sawyer. Directors include John Harmon, Randy Wachsman, David Bedingfield, and Bobby Rowland. Associate directors are Johnny McClane and Bryan Waggoner. Doug McCulloch is the immediate past president. José Garcia is state director and Chuck Dennis is life director. John Harmon is the alternate state director.

In his remarks to the membership, Miller, who is president of Newell Construction in Lubbock and the incoming president of the TAB, encouraged everyone to support Proposition 2 in the upcoming election. Proposition 2 will fund needed water projects across the state.

He also spoke in support of retaining the mortgage interest deduction for homebuyers. He said fully 25 percent of the cost of a new home is due to federal, state, and local government regulations. Therefore, homeowners need the mortgage interest deduction.

Miller noted that OSHA is increasing the number of inspectors visiting residential construction sites throughout Texas. “We met with OSHA representatives to come up with training and safety programs for our members to help them meet OHSA guidelines.”

He added that Texas is the number one state in residential construction for each of the last two years.

Miller said TAB membership is currently at about 10,000 members, down from a high of 14,000 members a few years ago. However, he noted the membership decrease has ended and the organization has enjoyed a slight increase in membership during the past year.

He urged everyone to get involved in TAB. “We need to hear your voice out there. There are local and regional issues that you need to be involved in. If you don’t put anything into it, you won’t get anything out of it. There are a lot of committees to get involved in and provide your input.”

He also urged North Texas Home Builders Association members to attend the upcoming Sunbelt Builders Show. This year the show will be in Austin from October 20-22. “There will be 215 exhibitors and four keynote speakers including Gen. Tommy Frank.”

Miller said attitude i s i mp or t a nt i n a ny organization. “Like a virus, it spreads!”

In closing, he thanked the leaders and members of the North Texas Home Bui lders Associat ion for thei r suppor t and i nvolvement i n TA B during the last few years and promised to keep working for the interests of homeowners and builders in the future.

REMEMBER TO DO BUSINESS WITH A MEMBER!The next time you come

to a North Texas Home Bu i lde r s Assoc i a t i on event , look around at your fellow members. I guarantee that more than half of the people you see will be associate members. These are people who are essential to the home building process and help enable our industry to provide Americans with an unrivaled selection of quality homes.

Among the ranks of associate members are subcontractors, sales and marketing specialists, architects, interior designers, title and settlement experts, lawyers, people in the financial services industry, product suppliers and manufacturers, and many more who are essential to the challenging task of providing housing for a growing population.

Associate members are also essential to the North Texas Home Builders Association offering sponsorships, devoting countless hours at committee meetings and volunteering at special events, and strengthening our industry in the process.

Most importantly, our associate members help broaden our perspective so that we can assess issues more objectively

in the context of our entire industry.

We w o u l d l i k e t o recognize our associates who volunteer their time and services to NTHBA.

NTHBA has always appreciated the dedication and en thus iasm of i t s

associate members, but in today’s unsettled – and unsettling – housing market environment, we appreciate that dedication and commitment more than ever.

I urge all North Texas Home Builders Association members to get to know one another better, learn about each others’ businesses and whenever possible, to do business with other members.

Our HBA is strong when individual members are strong, and doing business with other members is a great way to strengthen the association while ensuring that the people you work with understand the issues and concerns that affect your day-to-day operations.

Associate members are invaluable to our businesses and an essential part of our proud history, tradition and spirit.

Let’s all thank them by doing business with a member!
